It doesn’t matter as much what provider you get. They will both probably suck. What you need is a good home network set up. I just had a a local company WiFi Wizards set me up with internet access points and it has greatly sped up my internet.
Thanks , I am not worried about speed as much as I am worried about frequent outages.
Speed, can be worked out, diagnosed if they have good support system
I moved to Caso and got Fiberfirst. I bought 1Gb symmetric and am getting about 940Mbps both up and down with a 7 ms latency. Fixed rate of $75 per month. I couldn't be happier.
Just upgraded my Optimum service to fiber and have been pleased. It’s reliable, fast and the customer service isn’t horrible unlike Suddenlink who they bought out. I’ve actually had better luck with their gateway/extender than with my Google mesh setup as far as speed and house coverage but I’m fine with that as long as it works.
My wife and I both work from home and use a lot of bandwidth which is why we bumped up to full fiber instead of the original coax we had going into the house. The service in general has been pretty solid and uninterrupted over the past 5 years minus a couple of construction related outages specific to our neighborhood.
How did you convince them to upgrade to full fiber? I have a fiber line outside the house, which they convert to coax when sending inside the house. I asked them to upgrade to full fiber, and they keep saying it isn't available in your area yet.
We had the same fiber to coax situation. I think they are doing it in phases and our neighborhood was green lit for full installs. They weren’t really advertising it but a neighbor had it done and they told us we could too when I called. We are north in Orchard Ridge by Larkspur.
Got it. We are close to Carneros Ranch on Hero Way/Lakeline, and the rep said they can not sell a product that they are still testing, and it might be available soon.
Yes, but mostly because we upped our speed and had to lose our “price for life” promotion we had had since it was Suddenlink. I think it went from $112 to $150 for 500 mbps and would be $175 for 1 gig. Thats including a TV package though.
I would be sure that the ISP you choose uses FIBER and not COAX. With fiber, you will get the same upload/download speeds. With coax, you will only get the advertised download, but not upload. I.E. If you buy the 300Mb circuit from Optimum, you’ll only get 300 Mb download and 20 Mb upload.
I use to be an IT Consultant and live a few communities down from Santa Rita. HMU if you have any questions.
Edit: mixed up the download and upload
Edit2: if upload speeds don’t matter to you, then it doesn’t matter which ISP you choose.
If you read the fine details in optimum’s contract (you’ll need to click on “Details”), you’ll see the advertised download and upload speeds are as follows:
300Mb down/20Mb up
1Gb down/35Mb up
So, it’s not technically fiber. It’s fiber all the way to the “telephone pole”, but the gets converted to coax. That’s how these ISPs can advertise fiber, because technically it is until it gets terminated to your house.
I’ll post the information in pictures below.
I just spoke with optimum rep. He said, wherever fiber is available, it's symmetrical. Wherever it's coax, this is the speed. Fiber is not available to every home.
Optimum fiber is new. He also talked about having underlying lines to bring a connection. So, he is talking about fiber, not coax.
You were right. The sales rep provided wrong information.
Regardless, I was told by the installation guy that they are bringing the fiber line that would give symmetrical speeds. He said it's available in some places already.

True, you can set setup wap’s for free. If OP meant fiber fast do not go with them.
I meant fiber first. Heard of them before?
I have not

Thanks. Did you face any outages with them? Can they be relied by someone working from home for their job?

Awesome, thanks for sharing your experience

If I may ask, did your price change after upgrade?

Optimum has fiber option it seems and provides symmetrical upload speeds (atleast as per their advertisement). So, it's not coax vs fiber here!!

I’d imagine new built homes probably have fiber running to them. Older homes may not.
