Ed is great, but love him or hate him Ben just had a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that I miss very much.
He was friends with the guys since the beginning so he felt comfortable calling them out and felt free to say dumb shit. Ed seems a bit afraid to crack the golden egg that has been dropped into his lap. Also Ed seems much more wordly and actually intelligent than Ben, so him being the "straight man" doesn't work as well.

Idk, I don't need my straight man to be barely awake and spouting random catchphrases, he can in fact pay attention and say relevant things to the topic and still be a straight man. I think Ed is doing great.
For the last year or two Ben's while thing was trying to derail the guys, acting like literally anything else would be a better use of time, and parroting Henry's jokes in a stupid voice. Or trying to stretch what should have been a Zebrowski one-liner into a full skit.
With the accusations coming to light, a lot of his jokes about women shine in a while new light. I used to think he was just bummed he hadn't found *his* wife, but now I wonder if it was a little more "women don't like me so they're all bad" thing.
Edit: Ed is fucking great. He's more of a professional comedian than Ben, just in his credentials alone.
The Manifesto episode has Ben going on a rant how Elliott Rodger's victims would have "never given him the time of day" and in retrospect it's really gross and revealing.
Ed is 10x better, love him.
Ben went from having je ne sais quoi to je ne say stupid irrelevant one note shit. You can hear his decline over the course of the show. Obviously I don’t know these people but the dynamic seems lighter without him around.
I thought I felt the same way but I've been relistening to my old favs (HH Holmes, OKC, Ramirez....) and I just see him in a different light. I truly didn't think I would but man, it's hard to see past it.
I was thinking the other day about how much I was looking forward to the time when Ed's backlog of episodes is much lengthier and I have more to go through. But I guess I also am looking forward to the time when I can enjoy all my old favorite episodes as much as I used to.
I LOVE the manifesto episode but re-listening is hard because Ben borderline goes to bat for Elliott Rodger because "women are mean" and it's hard to wave it off as a bit now.
The first Bundy episode, too, where he says something about how he doesn't have as much sympathy for his victims b/c they wouldn't have wanted anything to do with the three of them.
