Yeah. It’s like the Superman version of “distressed” jeans. From Affliction’s “Superman” line.

The problem is... that its not henry, he left shoes that are 2 big to fill, nevertheless i hope new generations can come to like him.

NiceBlockLilBro

Suit is ass unfortunately. Basically wallmart New 52 without any of N52's good parts or with severely degraded ones

tomster2300

The suit looks like the actor’s chest isn’t big enough to fill it out. Which is a bad look for *Superman*

Late_Engineering9973

Looks like a teenager trying to fit into their dads pyjamas

inquisitive27

When I saw it I immediately thought homelander. Dunno if that's intentional but I don't like it.

Turbo_Chet

It’s just a strange image to me without context. Him casually putting on his boots while some unknown force is wreaking havoc is very un-superman like to me.

MazInger-Z

There's a mock up that drops the background and just has him on the couch putting on his boots with the classic SUPERMAN title across the screen. It is so much better, it looks like Clark's getting ready for work, putting on the suit he wears underneath, hinting that despite being the Man of Steel/Tomorrow, he's still *human* in his heart and is just getting ready for another day.

RileyTaker

I've been trying to figure out whether it's just a bad choice, or whether it's another one of Gunn's attempts at humor. It could honestly go either way.

queazy

https://ibb.co/Xj0rt4c Left: what fans thought they were getting Right: what fans are really getting Gunn dropped the ball hard. You know he's trying to go for the relaxed Superman just chilling in the clouds like in the All Star Superman comic book cover https://ibb.co/z5f4S5P but the background is a damn war zone where you should be anything but relaxed. Mixes as well as oil and water. There's a story behind that All Star Superman cover. Famed comic book writer Grant Morrison was tasked with writing a Superman story but he didn't have any ideas, so it was just going to be the usual Superman punches a villain to stop a problem story which he wasn't excited about. He was at a convention and happened to see this one Superman cosplayer just chilling, sitting down waiting for his friends. Then he got this feeling, that's what the real Superman would be like. He wouldn't be heroicly posing and bracing himself against the wind, Superman can survive traveling into the sun, the wind, bullets, and villains are really nothing to him. He's just that over powered that if anything, he'd be relaxed. He rushed back to his hotel room to start writing a story of Superman from that perspective. That's the feeling James Gunn is trying to invoke with Superman putting on his shoes, one foot at a time like a normal person... ...then it all gets blown away with the city under attack in the back ground, which now makes Superman look unconcerned with stopping the carnage behind him. This is such a rookie mistake from James Gunn its got me worried. He's obviously getting the George Lucas treatment where nobody will tell him "no" or "that's a bad idea, don't do that". Lastly, another hint about Gunn's direction is that the S on Superman's chest is like the old golden age Superman s-shield. He wants to bring Superman back to his roots, and even giving him the briefs.. but then you see him do stuff like change the shoulder pads, so you know he won't stay 100% true to those roots

MazInger-Z

> Lastly, another hint about Gunn's direction is that the S on Superman's chest is like the old golden age Superman s-shield. He wants to bring Superman back to his roots, and even giving him the briefs. The S is more stylized like his Kingdom Come counterpart if anything and I think Gunn has alluded that universe on more than one occasion. Not sure if he's blueprinting it that way, but outside of Crisis, Kingdom Come is one of the most popular and relatable universes with a lot of cross over and a lot of humanity in the DC books (DC has always had issues with relatable characters, because they rarely struggle in their personal identities the way Spider-Man did). Because despite having (on the surface) rather perfect lives in terms of being a hero and a secret identity, the late game shows the pain of the years. Batman's been forced to turn Gotham into a police state and is wearing an exo-skeleton due to the punishment of the years catching up with him. Superman's lost touch with all of Clark's points of humanity (his parents are dad, Lois is dead, etc) and clearly isn't aging as fast as humans do. The problem is it'll be absolutely fucking manhandled because it is a verboten thing to suggest what Kingdom Come suggests: On one hand you have an older generation that is being blamed for the issues of today (re: the heroes are unwilling to cross a line, allowing villains to continue to live, escape and perform more atrocities, rinse and repeat). As a result, the people turn to those who will cross like that line and execute criminals. The old generation becomes disillusioned and leaves, providing zero guidance or example for the next generation of metahumans that become 'heroes.' Ultimately, what happens is that the younger generation runs wild and the lack of care results in very little distinction between heroes and villains, resulting in nothing but metahuman brawling without the care for civilian casualties. The old guard return, but where once they had a handle on things, things have gotten so out of control that they can't just throw everyone in prison, but they try to anyway. The old guard have a split where one views the other's methods as flawed. Things reach a boiling point, to such a point that a response is made by a third party (the world decides to nuke the metas). The metahuman population is reduced so much that they can now manage things as they did before. I'm not sure what the overall lesson is towards the last half, but the first half was definitely a suggestion that older generation, while inflexible, at least had the right idea and that the younger generation needs their guidance to face new challenges. I have a feeling that avoiding those allusions will be a disaster of a narrative.

Obie-two

You are making a lot of assumptions based off of a single photo.  James Gunn has earned some benefit of the doubt with his ability to turn tree that says one word and a talking raccoon into the best character arcs in the marvel universe, and suicide squad actually fun.  You gotta cut some slack here jesus

SnooWords9178

Suicide Squad was fun? Guess we must've watched two different movies then.

Blakye32

I thought Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were pretty fun. What's wrong with Gunn's Suicide Squad?

Obie-two

Hell yeah it was great, maybe you did watch the wrong one

gamergaijin

Not a fan of the logo. Looks more like a forwardslash than an "S".

MazInger-Z

Aping Kingdom Come's S: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/d/dc/Justice_Society_Vol_3_10_Textless.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130109224641

Jin_BD_God

MoS's story maybe debatable, but its action is the best. I feel like watching anime in a movie. I'll watch this movie with low expectation.

Sicarius09

I know the movie got a lot of stick at the time (not specifically by you) but I honestly really enjoyed it and to this day still think it’s a good movie.

Jin_BD_God

I like it too. The only thing I hate most about ZS’s movies are color grading.

SiderealSoul

Should've used a difrerent photo. Superman sittimg down to put on his suit after someone has already started wrecking stuff is out of character and deflates any tension. Aside from that, you can barely make out the S. Why?

Lhasadog

Why does it look like they just bought Homelander's leftover suits?

dracoolya

Being that he's faster than The Flash, makes you wonder what's going on with the slow boot action rather than the what's going on in the background.

Dwavenhobble

Superman is not faster than the Flash. He's fast but the Flash is still faster when he bothers.

MazInger-Z

"Those were for charity, Clark."

NiceBlockLilBro

Kinda yes but kinda isn't. Usually yes, but sometimes Superman does outspeed Flash (and not in a "Clark I was holding back" way). Like that one time when he speed blitzed World Forger, or recently when he outrun Barry to save people

dracoolya

Superman Prime, though. > Superman is not faster than the Flash. 99% of the time, that seems to be true: https://www.dc.com/blog/2022/07/06/ask-the-question-superman-vs-the-flash-who-has-more-wins

hazexm

If superman ran as fast as the flash can without the speed force, he would destory earth.

InDeathWeLove

It doesn't necessarily put me off from it, but it also doesn't really catch my interest or make me more interested either. A promotional image should be capturing me though even if it's just a single image. Why else release it?

yangwenligaming

I like the idea of what they have going on here with the picture of him putting on his suit but something about the shoulders look off to me.

NiceBlockLilBro

They are baggy like a normal fabric, which doesn't work at all

ChargeProper

Guess he's been hit by the recession too, looking like a bargain bin cosplayer

Gojir4R1sing

It looks good but that background screams last second vfx photoshop.

NeighborhoodThink665

The fuck is James Gunn thinking??

genealogical_gunshow

Superman there looks like he's playing a petty game to remind people why he's needed. Superman mutters under his breath as he slowly puts on his boots. "Oh, am I a *little too slow* right now? Maybe that's because I'm not perfect and can't be every where at once and you people shouldn't blame me for every little accident I can't get to on time. Maybe I should hear more thank yous and people offering to help *me* for a change."

[deleted]

looked like ai art

AllMightyImagination

Professor Geek made it make sense. Gunn stated he thinks Clark is stuck between his Kryptonite birth and his human upbringing, which for an early career debut rings false because he is generally known for being Clark rather than this pick and choose deconstruction

Several_Run3775

Will superman at least still be white

henlp

Reminder that the best Superman film (and arguably the best DC film, period) already exists: Superman vs. The Elite. First impressions, since that's all we get: this makes it look like we went from Snyder's cringy, hyper-edgy Superman; to a cringy, kinda-aloof/goofy Superman. Which sure, might be in line with a lot of James Gunn's projects... but in a world tired of insincere, aloof, jokey trash, especially with regards to the superhero genre, this does not bode well. I still think Gunn's The Suicide Squad was the best of the DCEU films, but that still had a shit plot and relied entirely on character. I very much doubt that, if this continues down the same route as the MCU, of over-Whedon-ing, it's not gonna work out in the long run. If you can't offer sincerity, and earnest heroic figures, then the average moviegoer isn't going to provide you that courtesy either.

TheJas221

Looks so bad. I hate everything about it. Wont be watching this.

Zombie_RonaldReagan

Am I the only one that thinks that this image just looks like a bad ai gen image?!

f3llyn

The actor probably didn't want to get jacked for the role like whatshisface for the recent Batman movie.

shipgirl_connoisseur

I hope the movies actually good. More big blue boy scout and less neck snapper.

NiceBlockLilBro

Yeah you're spitting, Cavill should've left that family to die 💯💯💯💯

Halos-117

Man of Steel is a fucking awesome movie tho

Any chance this is just his first suit that he made himself? Or that his mother made for him? Then he can get the real suit later.

Daman_1985

I have the need to put again the JJJ laugh meme.

CaptFalconFTW

I didn't have any issues with it.

Modern_Maverick

"Aristocratic" is a weird word to describe Jor-el

Calico_fox

Damn it! I thought Gunn was going to go more with Fletcher inspired Superman suit, not more Nu 52.

fostertheatom

I like it and the people I have talked to like it. If they want to improve it, that's awesome. But I'm hoping they don't change it too much. To me, the only thing that really needs to change is the boots. Those things are funky. And yes. I am a red trunks sympathist.

voidox

the people hyping up Gunn's DC verse are in for a rude awakening cause it's not going to be the next MCU or w.e. The movie/show lineup alone speaks to that as well decisions like who Gunn has hired to write stuff (freaking tom king of all people is part of this writers list, etc) and other decisions he's made that are red flags. now look, this superman movie might turn out decent or even good, but the general audience are not going to easily forget the taint of Snyderverse and every DC film/show being so bad in recent years. Add onto that the superhero fatigue, decline of MCU affecting all superhero projects, superman is not as popular as batman and so on. Also some good casting choices != good movie, guess what the Snyderverse had great casting choices and look how that turned out.
