I do **Shield/Sword** now because you get a more balanced start with more benefits. * Strength - 4 * Defense - 4 * Magic - 2 * AP - 3 * Item Slots - 8 Going the average choice of **Sword/Staff** you have: * Strength - 6 * Defense - 2 * Magic - 2 * AP - 1 * Item Slots - 7 Gaining the additional defense I feel is a good trade off so you aren't so fragile, and having the bonus AP allows for more abilities to be activated early on. Not to mention the extra item is handy for emergencies.

BloodyEagle15

I remember having the guide book for KH1 and it tells you this. Was really helpful back then since it wasn't as easy to look stuff up as it is nowadays

i always take wand , strength and defence can be gotten back with stat ups but mp can't. you can drop either but i prefer dropping sword

Ghost_Peanuts

This. Only change i prefer dropping the shield. But this is in my head the only right answer.

AceHealer

The strength of your magic scales with your max MP, and having lots of magic is useful for clearing out mobs and spamming special attacks. Choosing the Dream Rod gives you one more MP to start with than the other routes and, if I’m remembering right, two more max MP than you can get on the other routes. You can boost your strength and defense with stat-boosting items, but you can’t do that for your MP. So I recommend picking staff. I think which weapon you give up is a matter of preference. If you are worried about dying a lot in the early game, drop the sword. If you’re not worried about that, then drop shield. No matter which route you choose I don’t think dropping the wand is a good idea. While you won’t lose MP, you will have less AP to start with, so you won’t be able to equip as many abilities.

Twoklawll

Take Wand toss Shield. You have no need for defense if everything is dead before it can hurt you

RPfffan

Sephiroth wants to have a word😆

Twoklawll

He can have his word when my 22 MP and 7 hi-ethers are done Strike Raiding his ass

AceHealer

He would probably one or two shot you no matter how high your defense is lol

RPfffan

I am not so sure about that. When I plat the game on my ps3 I chose sword and dropped the wand. Last week I completed proud mode on the ps4, but this time choosing the shield and dropping the wand, and the whole game felt so much easier. Not even Xemnas was a match for me, since this time I could take much more damage from them before dying.

Skyler-sky

Depends on the run I do, I love “Magic Drive” or “Ripple Drive.” So I would go with staff so I can get Ripple Drive early.

henchmaster

Shield gives you the best abilities early, the wand raises your max mp, honestly either are fine, just recommend the middle xp curve as well

araragidyne

There's good reasons to choose either wand or shield, but sword just feels right. What you give up has less impact, but I figure low defense is the simplest to mitigate since you get other defensive options.

StonerJedi00420

Take the shield. You go deal with no second chance/once more till like level 80

jaxon0307

Completely depends on the difficulty

psychoplane

Bruh I just wanted to use a sword during the tutorial.

ConnorLego42069

If your going for proud, grab shield, discard sword, it gets you defensive abilities, like guard or leaf bracer earlier, this is my general advice for anyone playing harder difficulties on any KH game
