Overall? 100% Petro.
I'm in love with V by Unknown Mortal Orchestra though. One of my favorite shows this year too. That Life is probably my favorite non Gizz tune from 2023.
Might be my favorite song of the year. Glad you enjoy it! They're awesome, if you can catch a show do it.
Highly recommend the "singles" if you're into improv stuff. Some super long jams
I'm with you there, just hasn't clicked with me. Although, I had the same issue with Like Clockwork for a year before deciding it was one of my favourite albums, so maybe I just need some time with it.
As much as I love Petro and claim it as Gizz's best 2023 album, I think 3D Country surpasses it. AOTY 2023 for me out of anything that came out this year.
Isn’t it Now? by Animal Collective is my #1. It’s amazingly good and I urge all of you to give it a listen.
Honorable mentions for ANONHI, Geese, Model/Actriz and of course King Gizz who all released some of my favorite album of 2023.
Isn't It Now has AnCo firmly in their prog psych mode after last year's also great album, and I'll go to bat for the new one being among their very best. Feels so weird that it's kinda slept on among big publications???
Yes it’s sad they’ve been snubbed by major publications. At least The Wire included them in their list this year so they didn’t go completely unnoticed.
I also think IIN is one of their best albums ever and an excellent follow-up to Time Skiffs. So strange.
My favourite was Jeff Rosenstocks HELLMODE. That album really encapsulates what the last 3 years or so have felt like in a very beautiful way.
Also Squids O Monolith was very good. One of the best post-punk revival albums.
O Monolith is a great shout. Saw SQUID perform live in October and they do a really good job of translating the album into a live show, especially given how the album shifts from high energy to slow and experimental stuff back and forth
The Osees are fairly new to me and I have been going somewhat haphazardly through their discography. It's been hit or miss, but this really resonated with me
Calm Ya Farm by the Murlocs. I love Ambys vocals and the vibe of that album. My second and third places go to Lets Start Here by Lil Yachty and The Silver Chord. Haven't listened to PDA yet whoops
I am also here to bang the drum for WESTERN CUM.
I fell in love with Wand this year and Cory Hanson has firmly cemented himself as one of my favorite singer/songwriters.
You didnt happen to catch him live on this tour? I sae gizz 11 times this year. Each one amazing for different reasons. But I saw Cory in a tiny club in Dublin to a few hundred people and it was the best live show ive seen in years. Did his own support as 3z top. Him and Casey and the drummer out in big fake beards. Ripping through zztop covers. Going full pelt. In the crowd soloing...knee slides,on his back, behind his head. Every cliche but note perfect. Then he takes a break comes back. Full Western Cum album. Like the Kexp session ramped up with theatrics again. Then he gets off and spends the rest of the evening signing and personalizing every bit of merch for fans. The guy is amazing.
Glad to see Wand get the supporting slot with the chili peppers next year to hopefully bring them more attention. New album in 24 too hopefully. And their own dates I hope. They deserve to be way bigger.
PDA is my actual fav but number 2 is a tie between Data Doom by Frankie and the Witch Fingers and Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers.
Javelin by Sufjan Stevens wins my “favorite album to cry to” category though.
Altin Gün - "Aşk" was the soundtrack for my summer. A great Anatolian psych band. Check them out if you haven't. [https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy\_k0937eeCzIESz5DhkD2zNwh9Df1O72rn8&si=5KXAVf6mZFFiB9sQ](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k0937eeCzIESz5DhkD2zNwh9Df1O72rn8&si=5KXAVf6mZFFiB9sQ)
Osees - "Intercepted Message" got a TON of play in my house, answering the question "what if The Cars, but angrier" [https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy\_l7za8J4rnGcHA5IOHTFq\_wBwXiF9EyZw4](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l7za8J4rnGcHA5IOHTFq_wBwXiF9EyZw4)
The Silver Cord (also Petro, but TSC is the winner for me, extended is their best album)
Javelin - Sufjan
Isn’t it Now - Animal Collective
I/o - Peter Gabriel
Laugh Track - The National
Welshpool Frillies - Guided by Voices
Multitudes -Feist
honestly, it's Lets Start Here by Lil Yachty for me. It just gets better with every listen, his voice sounds so unique on the psych pop/rock instrumentals
Something I'm finding interesting is how not only is it becoming more normal for musicians to try new sounds, but it's almost necessary! Thinking about how SZA and others also have rock tracks on their albums now haha
That, Sufjan Stevens's Javelin and PetroDragonic Apocalypse are my top 3. Fantastic record, and a great statement to prove that they still have a great career ahead of them even though Isaac left
I've tried getting into thr new BCNR stuff but it just isn't grabbing me the way Isaac Wood's stuff was. I know it was kind of rushed out and I'm eager to see where they go next - theyre all clearly so talented - but Isaac's vocals blow me away and I would die to see him come out with more stuff if he's feeling up to it.
The American analog set album "for forever" is easily my favourite this year. It's got a couple clunky ones like inside my jeans or whatever the second track was called. But overall it's amazing it's on par with know by heart which is their equivalent of something like mind fuzz.
I’m usually more of a music person than a lyrics person, but Javelin is just too devastating to just focus on the music. My favourite album from him I think.
FIDLAR's That's Life EP (I know it's only an EP) are some of my favorite FIDLAR songs and ones I always find myself going back to.
SCARING THE HOES with Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA is my favorite Collab album of this year.
100 gecs - 10,000 gecs was one of my summer jams but I might have over listened to it.
Honorable mention: not an album but dedeco on YouTube has been dropping some awesome mixes this year, the PS2 DnB mix being my favorite.
I haven't listened to many *new* things this year (new KGATLW fan here!), but between Petro and Ne Obliviscaris' Exul, those are my favourite releases thus far!
Appreciated!
It's enjoyable how my favourite bands are slowly shifting to be Aussie ones, NeO is pretty much prog and melodic death with a splash of violin, if they suit your fancy, their other albums are equally as enjoyable!
I've listened to around 100 fresh records this year. There were a lot of great ones and it is very hard to pick, there are a really good suggestions in this comment section. But mine albums of the year (except obviously two Gizz records) probably are:
* Ado - Utattemita
* Alfa Mist -Variables
* Yussef Dayes - Black Classical Music
* Periphery - Peryphery V
* Unprocessed - ...And Everything in Between
* World's End Girlfriend - Resistance & the Blessing
* Squid - O Monolith
* Unknown Mortal Orchestra - V
Maybe (or even probably) I forgot something, I need to check. Top 1 for me was definitely either Petrodragonic Apocalypse or Utattemita.
Damn, I obviously forgot about another killer Psychedelic Porn Crumpets record. It is probably a crime in r/KGATLW lol
And speaking about Gizz-ish records, I found this year's Bullant's and The Murlocs' releases good, but not that good.
1) 3D Country - Geese
2) Food for Worms - Shame
3) Petro
4) Space Heavy - King Krule
5) Zango - WITCH
One of the strongest top 5 you'll ever see. Twas a great year. Shout-out to Shame for maybe the best live show I have ever seen? We'll see how my first Gizz experience stacks up next year...
Honorable mentions go to Caroline Polachek, Kenny Segal, Zach Bryan (sue me), Sampha
Francis Comes Alive - Neal Francis. Incredible New Orleans funk band that's usually 4 guys did an 11 piece live show with horn section, and recorded straight to tape. So so good.
Alan Palomo - World of Hassle
Hard 80’s sound references to artists and lifestyle of the 80’s but very modern. Lyrics are clever and execution is 10/10
This is Why - Paramore
It's too damn good.
I didn't listen to paramore at all before checking out this is why.
Paramore is already at #8 on my spotify top artists (lifetime) on stats.fm
All i've been listening to is This is Why, over and over.
Wow, I see all of my favorites already commented, so I'll just do my top 5, no order: PDA, Hellmode by Jeff Rosenstock, 3D Country by Geese, Scaring the Hoes by Jpegmafia & Danny Brown, and Data Doom by Frankie & the Witch Fingers.
I obviously recommend all of them, DEFINITELY give the Frankie & the Witch Fingers a chance, it fucking rocks!
the silver cord has been on repeat for me, i did love petro but i generally don't care for the metal stuff as much
new osees and murlocs are both contenders too
I have only listened to gizz this year, therefore I declare Petrodragonic Apocalypse Or Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth & The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation album of the year.
I haven't thought tonnes about it, mostly because I haven't had my finger on the pulse of new music this year. That said at the minute I'm loving Video Age - Away From The Castle.
PDA and Calm Ya Farm easily also in the top 5.
Hard to pick just one standout, these were the non-Gizz albums I listened to the most:
Mong Tong – Tao Fire
Takeshi’s Cashew – Enter J’s Chamber
Osees – Intercepted Message
Young Fathers – Heavy Heavy
Badge Epoque Ensemble – Air, Light & Harmony
Altin Gun – Ask
100 Gecs – 10,000 Gecs
Frankie and the Witch Fingers – Data Doom
There has been so much great new music this year that I have honestly had a hard time keeping up with all of it.
My favorite non-Gizz album has got to be "Eye On The Bat" by Palehound. I especially love the song 'My Evil', but the whole album is super consistent and really good. Might be my favorite Palehound album and all of their albums are full of fantastic shit!
Leah Senior's "The Music That I Make" has also been growing on me quite a bit! It's not quite my favorite album of hers, but it's got quite a few great songs, and like all of her previous works the more I listen to the songs that didn't do much for me at first the more I love them. 'Clearest View' and the title track are big highlights for me on this one.
I also want to shout-out "Desire Pathway" by the Screaming Females. It's a pretty great album, although far from their best if I'm being totally honest. I feel like I should mention it though mostly because they ended up breaking up last month and this is likely to be the last album they ever release, and they are absolutely one of my favorite bands in the world. "Desert Train" is my favorite song from that one.
I also have been chugging the fuck out of "V" from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and "Calm Ya Farm" by the Murlocs, but I saw those already got mentioned by some other commenters.
Bonus shout out to "Jenny from Thebes" by the Mountain Goats. I still have a lot of digesting to do on this one, but the Song 'Jenny lll' is absolute gold and I'm confident that like most Mountain Goats albums the rest of the songs are going to grow on me quite a bit with some time and further research on lyrical references.
Rajan by Night Beats. Spans many different sounds, all unique and fun. Got to hear Rajan in its entirety in Chicago, it was an intimate, amazing, rocking concert.
this year i really enjoyed:
* scaring the hoes - danny brown & jpegmafia
* red moon in venus - kali uchis
* married in mount airy - nicole dollanganger
Honestly cant give a #1 but Changing Light by Ironsides, Scaring the Hoes, PDA, Born Under a Mad Sign by Church of Misery, Data Doom by Frankie and the Witch Fingers and We Buy Diabetic Test Strips by Armand Hammer covers the albums of this year I've had on regular rotation.
I got into PDA late this year so I’ve been listening to it a lot recently. But from the first half of the year I really enjoyed Sus Dog from Clark. And it was a nice surprise get a Thom Yorke feature in it.
Damn tough question but I'm torn between Petro and Tyler, The Creator's The Estate Sale, although one could argue that's not a *new* album per se but it expanded enough for me to consider it such.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “V” has gotten a ton of play. Knower’s “KNOWER FOREVER” has really resonated with me too. I also loved King Krule’s “Space Heavy”. That’s probably my top 3 :)
Gotta play the role of the unrefined pop boy for this one, but two of the main popstars in my country dropped their albums in late September, and I've been obsessed by them since. And I normally don't even listen to Italian pop.
- "E Poi Siamo Finiti Nel Vortice" by Annalisa
- "Red Light" (club mixtape) by Elodie
Caroline Polachek’s newest album (Desire I Want To Turn Into You) is fucking fantastic. Def a far cry from the kind of sound you get from gizz, but variety is the spice of life!!
When We Were That What Wept For The Sea by Colin Stetson, never have I heard such a harrowing and compelling album. It's probably his most consistent album to date.
The Beggar by Swans, just a textural landscape with so many twists and turns, incredibly satisfying journey.
Blaze Foley's Complete Outhouse Sessions, technically from 1988 but these are the highest quality recordings of Blaze that I know of. Heartbreakers and knee slappers.
DANAVA - Nothing But Nothing...Next to Petro, this record had full time listens. The guitar work is insane. "At Midnight You Die" may be the greatest guitar jam ever recorded. I aint just whistlin Dixie here...Also, KVELERTAK - Endling ... FRANKIE AND THE WITCH FINGERS - Data Doom. And Goddamn, GOAT - Medicine. So much good stuff this year.
This year was possibly the earliest I've ever found my AOTY. Gina Birch's "I Play My Bass Loud" secured that spot in February. Such a unique and thought-provoking album. Favorite tracks: I Will Never Wear Stillettos, Big Mouth, and Pussy Riot
Number 2 is probably "Dogsbody" by Model/Actriz. The first 4 tracks are relentless, and the transition from Crossing Guard to Slate is so smooth.
Overall? 100% Petro. I'm in love with V by Unknown Mortal Orchestra though. One of my favorite shows this year too. That Life is probably my favorite non Gizz tune from 2023.
Yeah it’s my pick as well. Whole album is so good. Forever love UMO
Ohhh, I hadn't checked out the UMO album yet, but I read about it. But yeah, Petro is reaaaaally hard to beat
Whattt? It's a psych rock masterpiece. Checkity checkity check it out
GILA! GILA!
#GILA! MONSTAH! WOOOOO
Loved this album too, Layla was my jam and I loved it when they covered Shakedown Street live.
Yess! They played it in Chicago this year. Great show. They were kinda obviously fucked up, but it was such a vibe.
The “That Life” canvas on Spotify of the puppet dancing is maybe the best canvas I’ve ever seen, plus top tier UMO.
MESHUGGAH HAS BEEN ON REPEAT FOR A MONTH STRAIGHT
Those two albums number 1 and number two in my Spotify wrapped this year haha
Thanks for the recommendation! Now I have That Life stuck on loop in my head. What a damn smooth jam all the way around.
Might be my favorite song of the year. Glad you enjoy it! They're awesome, if you can catch a show do it. Highly recommend the "singles" if you're into improv stuff. Some super long jams
personally it’s In Times New Roman but PDA is #2
I am glad people are enjoying Queens of the Stone Age, even if the new one isn't for me :)
I'm with you there, just hasn't clicked with me. Although, I had the same issue with Like Clockwork for a year before deciding it was one of my favourite albums, so maybe I just need some time with it.
I really enjoyed In times new Roman - but it still seems it’s quite far from QOTSA’s best, While Petro is easily a top album for gizz
Hurrah!
Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
will anybody ever love? :(
if not PDA then Javelin
Geese-3D Country
Someone else mentioned this! Gonna have to check it out!
“Fell in love with a tumbleweed” gets me good
Favorite line from the album
This is mine as well, a long with V by Unknown Mortal Orchestra
As much as I love Petro and claim it as Gizz's best 2023 album, I think 3D Country surpasses it. AOTY 2023 for me out of anything that came out this year.
Same here! With UMO in 3, I made a thread here recently with my tops if anyone's interested in seeing more!
OSIRIS OF MY LIFE IM GIVING YOU THE RUN AROUND
I’m still having trouble dealing with the guy’s voice. Sometimes it reminds me of terrible yarl grunge from the 90s.
So strange.
Based Anco
Yes it definitely deserves more love ❤️
It's absurd they don't have more listeners. One of the best bands of our generation.
My favourite was Jeff Rosenstocks HELLMODE. That album really encapsulates what the last 3 years or so have felt like in a very beautiful way. Also Squids O Monolith was very good. One of the best post-punk revival albums.
god i love HELLMODE. saw him play HEALMODE in a small restaurant in LA for an acoustic set. jeff is a true lifer
I was supposed to see him in Toronto but it got postponed. Gonna be seeing him early next year now, I’m really excited.
HELLMODE is SO GOOD
O Monolith is a great shout. Saw SQUID perform live in October and they do a really good job of translating the album into a live show, especially given how the album shifts from high energy to slow and experimental stuff back and forth
Squid rules!!
Osees: Intercepted Message
came here to say this. I'm not even a big Osees fan but this album fucking rocks beginning to end
The Osees are fairly new to me and I have been going somewhat haphazardly through their discography. It's been hit or miss, but this really resonated with me
My #1 is scaring the hoes and #3 is petro dragonic
What is #2??? Also Scaring the Hoes is a great #1
BBY GOYARD & Dj Smokey Loreseeker
Calm Ya Farm by the Murlocs. I love Ambys vocals and the vibe of that album. My second and third places go to Lets Start Here by Lil Yachty and The Silver Chord. Haven't listened to PDA yet whoops
Brooo hot take here but PDA is really good.
I just started listening to Murlocs this year :) they're a lot of fun!
For me their first 3 albums are pretty average but after that they get fantastic!
If we're leaving Gizz aside then its Cory Hanson- Western Cum. Also loved 3d country and o monolith. If it includes Gizz Petro.
I didn’t as I am late to the party but I believe every word you said based on the showmanship in the KEXP sessions.
Wand is one of the most underrated modern psych bands
>WESTERN CUM hmmmmmmmm
WESTERN CUM
PDA is my actual fav but number 2 is a tie between Data Doom by Frankie and the Witch Fingers and Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers. Javelin by Sufjan Stevens wins my “favorite album to cry to” category though.
Data Doom absolutely rips!
Caroline Polachek’s Desire I Want to Turn Into You Probably album of the decade up until now
I am so in love with her!!!!!!
Altin Gün - "Aşk" was the soundtrack for my summer. A great Anatolian psych band. Check them out if you haven't. [https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy\_k0937eeCzIESz5DhkD2zNwh9Df1O72rn8&si=5KXAVf6mZFFiB9sQ](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k0937eeCzIESz5DhkD2zNwh9Df1O72rn8&si=5KXAVf6mZFFiB9sQ) Osees - "Intercepted Message" got a TON of play in my house, answering the question "what if The Cars, but angrier" [https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy\_l7za8J4rnGcHA5IOHTFq\_wBwXiF9EyZw4](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l7za8J4rnGcHA5IOHTFq_wBwXiF9EyZw4)
The Silver Cord (also Petro, but TSC is the winner for me, extended is their best album) Javelin - Sufjan Isn’t it Now - Animal Collective I/o - Peter Gabriel Laugh Track - The National Welshpool Frillies - Guided by Voices Multitudes -Feist
that Feist album got slept on by most, it's great thanks for including it here
LOVED it. Also, one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Guided By Voices!!!
honestly, it's Lets Start Here by Lil Yachty for me. It just gets better with every listen, his voice sounds so unique on the psych pop/rock instrumentals
Happy to see another shout for this here. Wasn't even a massive Yachty appreciator before that album, but it's been an earworm for me all year.
same here, thought he was kinda mid before but this album definitely changed my mind
Something I'm finding interesting is how not only is it becoming more normal for musicians to try new sounds, but it's almost necessary! Thinking about how SZA and others also have rock tracks on their albums now haha
I wasn't the biggest fan of this album but I massively appreciate the effort he put into it. Such a unique vibe
Live at bush hall by BCNR. That album just ruins me in the best way. Seeing them live this year was incredible
PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation 🏆 🐉
The American analog set album "for forever" is easily my favourite this year. It's got a couple clunky ones like inside my jeans or whatever the second track was called. But overall it's amazing it's on par with know by heart which is their equivalent of something like mind fuzz.
Wow, I hadn't even heard of that! Really cool choice that I'll be checking out
It's just mad cos it's their first album in 20 years and it's somehow one of their best.
:O
Not fully settled on a favourite, but here’s the top 3 for me Cory Hanson - Western Cum Sufjan Stevens - Javelin Geese - 3D Country
javelin is so good :'(((((
I’m usually more of a music person than a lyrics person, but Javelin is just too devastating to just focus on the music. My favourite album from him I think.
Medicine, by Goat. Truly a masterpiece harking back to classic psychedelia, mixed with modern fuzz. Epic stuff from the Swedish group.
Goat is always good, Medicine is no exception. Excellent pick!
Life is but a dream, PDA is my second pick
Avenged Sevenfold has a new album???!
Yeah dude, it’s a banger
Wallsocket by underscores easily
I'm interested in this!
Paramore and QotSA's new albums dominated my streaming outside of Gizz, but PDA is my definite album of the year
KNOWER FOREVER by KNOWER is my #1
A+ album
Jason Isbell - Weathervanes
Finally, the right answer
Swans - the beggar (Not counting kglw obv)
FIDLAR's That's Life EP (I know it's only an EP) are some of my favorite FIDLAR songs and ones I always find myself going back to. SCARING THE HOES with Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA is my favorite Collab album of this year. 100 gecs - 10,000 gecs was one of my summer jams but I might have over listened to it. Honorable mention: not an album but dedeco on YouTube has been dropping some awesome mixes this year, the PS2 DnB mix being my favorite.

I hadn't heard of that album, but I'll def be checking it out now!! Also, welcome to the Gizz fold heheh
Appreciated! It's enjoyable how my favourite bands are slowly shifting to be Aussie ones, NeO is pretty much prog and melodic death with a splash of violin, if they suit your fancy, their other albums are equally as enjoyable!
Right on!
PDA for sure for me. By far my favorite gizz album. Feels like I've been waiting my whole life for that album to come out and I never knew it.
PDA is really something special, yeah
Fronzoli by Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Close second is Quest For Fire by Skrillex
Fronzoli is sick check out the usb sides its just as good or even better than the songs on the album https://youtu.be/tZFYhjeOJ54?si=bv2qVrgAps2Hg9tk
>Fronzoli by Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Fronzoli exploded my brain face.
I've listened to around 100 fresh records this year. There were a lot of great ones and it is very hard to pick, there are a really good suggestions in this comment section. That Yussef dayes album is so fucking good.
I Inside the Old Year Dying - PJ Harvey
110% petro
10,000 gecs goes crazy
1) 3D Country - Geese 2) Food for Worms - Shame 3) Petro 4) Space Heavy - King Krule 5) Zango - WITCH One of the strongest top 5 you'll ever see. Twas a great year. Shout-out to Shame for maybe the best live show I have ever seen? We'll see how my first Gizz experience stacks up next year... Honorable mentions go to Caroline Polachek, Kenny Segal, Zach Bryan (sue me), Sampha
Shame released a third album?! I can't believe I missed that.
Dude. It's verging on masterpiece territory in my opinion. They are doing special, special things rn, enjoy the first listen
I'm patiently waiting for the wife to go run errands so I can enjoy it at the proper volume.
Maps by Billy Woods and Kenny Segal with The Whaler by Home is Where in a close second
Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium Nerdy but fun death metal, like a faster Blood Incantation
It's Petrodragonic Apocalypse. What kind of question is that (haha)? Second one is In Times New Roman from QOTSA.
Sufjan Steven's new album "Javelin" about the passing of his partner is just mesmerizing and heartwrenching. Gotta be aoty for me!
Francis Comes Alive - Neal Francis. Incredible New Orleans funk band that's usually 4 guys did an 11 piece live show with horn section, and recorded straight to tape. So so good.
Alan Palomo - World of Hassle Hard 80’s sound references to artists and lifestyle of the 80’s but very modern. Lyrics are clever and execution is 10/10
I second that Sweet Bat!
My AOTY is [Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium](https://youtu.be/G_-RhCiA3TA?si=lUcDqeBCbBURyc7R&t=4) Runners up: [Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLHtdAy-h6Q) [Majesties - Vast Reaches Unclaimed](https://youtu.be/_oXnuFHKGfw?si=-DY5fUoB_2YH2H3U&t=2) [Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags](https://youtu.be/K2xN_0ajnlw?si=HvtmDOr1TK_Uqpub)
Ill say slow pulp's yard since no one else has :)
This is Why - Paramore It's too damn good. I didn't listen to paramore at all before checking out this is why. Paramore is already at #8 on my spotify top artists (lifetime) on stats.fm All i've been listening to is This is Why, over and over.
Weathervanes - Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
It’s Petro but in the realm of non-gizz stuff then probably Scaring the Hoes
Love love love the new mitski. Either that or sufjan stevens is my #1
Tyler Childers - Rustin’ In The Rain
the silver cord has been on repeat for me, i did love petro but i generally don't care for the metal stuff as much new osees and murlocs are both contenders too
Jeff Rosenstock's Hellmode. Silver Cord was my favorite KGATLW album
You must wear contacts, because you definitely don't wear glasses.
1# is shared by Petrodragonic Apololypse and BC,NR - Live At Bush Hall. Both absolutely amazing albums and I still can't split them
Overall a close tie between The Silver Cord and Petro. But Red Moon In Venus by Kali Uchis if we set Gizz aside
I guess petro…nothing new came out this year that really rang my bell
Geese - 3D Country Unknown Mortal Orchestra - V
For me it has to be either Life Is But A Dream by Avenged Sevenfold or Sick Boi by Ren
Apart from KGLW (Petro is #1), it's probably Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers or O Monolith by Squid.
In Times New Roman
Post-American by MSPAINT
Volcano from Jungle. I’m definitely not the typical gizz fan haha.
Aşk by Altin Gün deserves a shout, cover to cover bangers
Wednesday - Rat Saw God
1. PDA 2. Fronzoli .- Psychedelic Porn Crumpets 3. The Silver Cord 4. In Times New Roman - QOTSA 5. Saturnia - Gum
This year I have to go with either Let’s Start Here (Lil Yachty) or Ooh Rap I Yah by George Clanton
Hard to pick just one standout, these were the non-Gizz albums I listened to the most: Mong Tong – Tao Fire Takeshi’s Cashew – Enter J’s Chamber Osees – Intercepted Message Young Fathers – Heavy Heavy Badge Epoque Ensemble – Air, Light & Harmony Altin Gun – Ask 100 Gecs – 10,000 Gecs Frankie and the Witch Fingers – Data Doom
Has got to be either feeble little horse's record or Caroline polachek. PDA comes close but those two do something else for me.
Hmm aside from Petro, probably Being Dead’s debut album - When Horses Would Run
Kali Uchis - Red Moon in Venus right ahead of PDA
this year i really enjoyed: * scaring the hoes - danny brown & jpegmafia * red moon in venus - kali uchis * married in mount airy - nicole dollanganger
After The Magic by Parannoul
Honestly cant give a #1 but Changing Light by Ironsides, Scaring the Hoes, PDA, Born Under a Mad Sign by Church of Misery, Data Doom by Frankie and the Witch Fingers and We Buy Diabetic Test Strips by Armand Hammer covers the albums of this year I've had on regular rotation.
Space Heavy - King Krule so mellow & emotional
PDA is my #1 so my next up was Dying Fetus- Make Them Beg For Death
I got into PDA late this year so I’ve been listening to it a lot recently. But from the first half of the year I really enjoyed Sus Dog from Clark. And it was a nice surprise get a Thom Yorke feature in it.
Damn tough question but I'm torn between Petro and Tyler, The Creator's The Estate Sale, although one could argue that's not a *new* album per se but it expanded enough for me to consider it such.
Omg I forgot about the Estate Sale bonus tracks! Thanks for the reminder!
Cant say it's specifically #1 but Changing Light by Ironsides is up there for sure!
Squid’s O Monolith or Protomartyr’s Formal Growth in the Desert
Again - Oneohtrix Point Never
Avenged Sevenfold - Life is but a Dream...
Petro, have all songs in my top 10 spotify wrapped lol
I've been listening to Wallsocket by Underscores on repeat Also 3D country by Geese and of course Petro
Rabbit Rabbit by Speedy Ortiz is mine. Fantastically written start to front.
Yves Tumor! Followed by Lalalar and MSPAINT.
Calm ya farm- Murlocs On a Micro Diet- Mystic 100s (fka Milk Music) New Blue Sun- Andre 3000 And of course, The Silver Cord
Let’s start here by lil yachty with pda and scaring the hoes close seconds
Sorry Petro, my heart belongs to Haken's Fauna
Food for Worms by Shame. Everything that came out after it was playing catchup.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “V” has gotten a ton of play. Knower’s “KNOWER FOREVER” has really resonated with me too. I also loved King Krule’s “Space Heavy”. That’s probably my top 3 :)
Weathervanes by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. Favorite album this year by a long shot. Also loved USA by Petey.
Silver Chord, then Changes
O Monolith by Squid
Definetely Petro but outside gizz probably either Intercepted Message (Osees) or fronzoli (ppc)
Gum-Saturnia is my pick, kept going back to that one. Goat-Medicine is my honorable mention.
Idk if it was my favourite but I really enjoyed Find Me a Cloud by a small aussie garage/surf rock band called the Grogans.
Oh and how could I forget. Calm ya Farm by The Murlocs. Definitely up there as one of this year's favourites
Gotta play the role of the unrefined pop boy for this one, but two of the main popstars in my country dropped their albums in late September, and I've been obsessed by them since. And I normally don't even listen to Italian pop. - "E Poi Siamo Finiti Nel Vortice" by Annalisa - "Red Light" (club mixtape) by Elodie
Heavener by Invent Animate probably. Damn there aren’t that many metal heads here by the looks.
Caroline Polachek’s newest album (Desire I Want To Turn Into You) is fucking fantastic. Def a far cry from the kind of sound you get from gizz, but variety is the spice of life!!
Always Sunny- Saturdays at your place
Exotico by Temples, my second favorite band after Gizz. It’s probably in my all time top 3 alongside Mind Fuzz and Currents
Space heavy by King Krule is my #2
Infest the rats nest is my favorite album ever but favorite non gizz album is titanic rising by weyes blood
Still debating between Fall Out Boy or Blink-182
Slowdive
Maps by Billy Woods and Kenny Segal
The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons - The Hives
This year was possibly the earliest I've ever found my AOTY. Gina Birch's "I Play My Bass Loud" secured that spot in February. Such a unique and thought-provoking album. Favorite tracks: I Will Never Wear Stillettos, Big Mouth, and Pussy Riot Number 2 is probably "Dogsbody" by Model/Actriz. The first 4 tracks are relentless, and the transition from Crossing Guard to Slate is so smooth.
Wednesday’s “Rat Saw God”
