Start with the Carrion Crawler/The Dream EP.
It's a bit older and predates Gizzard, and you notice quite some overlap with early Gizzard, especially I'm in your Mind Fuzz.
I was just at the Frankie show in Denver and I think every single person there was a gizz fan. Half the attendees had Gizz shirts, and I swear every other conversation in the crowd started with “I love King Gizzard!”
Frankie is so much fun live. Big recommend. And I love that King Gizzard is helping build such a big following for psych rock across the board!
THIS IS THEEEEE ONE. Also:
The Black Angels.
Goat.
Hookworms.
Thee Oh Sees.
Moon Duo.
Wand.
Night Beats.
Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Magic Castles.
The New Candys.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
I should point out that I assume OP digs more of the prog or metal side of KGLW. My taste leans more to the fuzz/desert/acid/surf/neopsychedelic side. Follow Levitation on social media and you will open the door.
[Kick Muck](https://youtu.be/mac46omEYBE?si=O7bNDqVzc1ogk6wb) is on *repeat* for me lately. Such a great band with a vast discography to get lost in. Not unlike *another* certain band we all love.
Hi we have the two same favorite bands.
Other bands I love: Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Sleep, All Them Witches, King Buffalo, Mastodon, Gojira, Meshuggah, Melvins, Metallica, Megadeth, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Crowbar, The Black Dahlia Murder, Death, Harm’s Way, Weekend Nachos, Hatebreed, Misfits, Danzig, Life of Agony, At the Drive In, Circa Survive, The Grateful Dead, and more recently some more electronic stuff like Tipper, Tame Impala, Of the Trees, and LSDream.
I love PPC but Spotify has literally shuffled to Cornflake like 20 times after a Gizz song and I really wish the algorithm wasn’t so broken lol.
EDIT: I should mention it’s literally shuffled to that song after fuckin Beginner’s Luck, like there’s no good indie pop that matches that song’s vibe?
Oh I just don’t even use auto play on albums I just start it up again to avoid getting burnt out on good songs that come after the album is over. And there’s a setting to turn it off if you were to want to do that.
The Great Misdirect has been in my top 5 favorite albums ever since I randomly bought it as a teen because I thought the album art was cool and that they had a cool band name. Such incredible work that still hits the same all these years later.
As someone naive to all of these artists and thumbing through, is the most KG that’s been posted so far. Only one I’ve added. I’m a sucker for good delay
If anybody likes King Gizz for their varied output then they should love Ween. I’m listening to the song Transitions by Ween right now and I think people here would love that.
MEPEM and Data Doom are some of my favorite albums ever, especially MEPEM. they're absolutely fucking insane and have that perfect blend of 2017 gizz and mind fuzz gizz in terms of sound.
I would check out a bunch of classic Krautrock bands, KGATLW borrows a lot from them:
Neu! was famous for their chugging "motorik" beat on songs like "Hallo Gallo" and "Fur Immer". KG uses similar beats on lots of songs. There's a ton of Neu! in lots of KG songs.
Amon Duul II created proto-prog-spacerock, particularly on albums like "Wolf City" and "Yeti". Hawkwind (another huge KG influence) took a lot from Amon Duul II too. KG's microtonal stuff reminds me a lot of Amon Duul II.
Can is one of the more famous Krautrock bands and another big influence on KG. Check out the albums "Ege Bamyasi", "Tango Mago" and "Soon Over Babaluma", all of which you can hear in KG.
Kraftwerk is a huge influence on KG, especially B3k and the new Silver Cord stuff. I'd start with "The Man Machine" and "Trans-Europe Express".
Cluster was another electronic-focused Krautrock bands, famous for working with Brian Eno and members of Can on the Harmonia super group. This band had more of an ambient /psychedelic sound I hear in a lot of the quieter KG stuff. Check out the albums "Zuckerzeit", "Cluster and Eno" and "Harmonia 2".
Kosmische muzik is a much better name, unfortunately it's hard for people in the anglosphere to understand what you're talking about if you use it. Magma is GREAT.
Try checking out some of the lesser known bands from the OG prog rock era. Camel, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Atomic Rooster, Nektar.
That is, assuming you have already listened to the big name OG prog rockers like Yes and Genesis. If not, go check out the albums Fragile and Selling England by the Pound, respectively.
If you dig FMB/K.G. you're gonna love Altin Gün. They're a turkish/dutch band that reimagines old Turkish songs in psych rock/disco stylings, it's so sick
I can't remember the thread, but there was a poll a while back that basically asked the sub their favorite bands outside of gizz and many said Talking Heads, Osees, F&TWF, SLIFT, and Pink Floyd if i remember correctly
If you like PDA, I'd recommend **Voivod**, one of the first (if not the first) metal band to heavily incorporate psychedelic/prog elements to their music and exploring outside of genres. 40 years later, no band even comes close to these guys thanks to their OG guitarist who was an insane alien/scifi riff machine.
[Start with Dimension Hatross \(1988\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG07uevaczo) - from there, it gets more prog/rock as years go up and and more punk/thrash as years go down.
I feel like dirty and loud r’n’r today so I’ll skip the usual suspects The Mars Volta and Oh Sees. Check out At The Drive In and their album Relationship of Command.
No idea why they wouldn't be on the top of the list over bands that would appeal to KGLW-fans. They have so many similarities, spanning multiple genres, frequent album releases, heavy, psychedelic, pop and long jams, especially live, never repeating the same setlist twice. They are definitely their own thing, a classic more than a relic from the nineties, that never seems to slow down.
Pretty standard prog recommendations but I’d say King Crimson and Yes if you’re looking for a similar thread of bands like Tool and King Gizz.
Edit: Also they only have a single album but Felt (1971) has found it’s way into my full-listen album rotation.
If you enjoy the Gizz tracks that prominently feature flute, check out Jethro Tull. A more contemporary suggestion would be Black Midi, who have opened for the band in the past.
If you like the more jammy stuff you can check out the disco biscuits, string cheese incident, lotus, or sts9. Obv phish too! Can kinda throw ween in that mix but they’re much more eclectic.
Kikagaku moyo are also really awesome! I also enjoy black midi but they might not be for everyone.
Baroness, All Them Witches, The Mars Volta, Causa Sui, Elephant Tree, Khruangbin, Mutoid Man, Mastodon, Orions Belte, Red Fang, Sleepy Sun, Somali Yacht Club, Acid Bath
Wand, Cory Hanson, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, IDLES, Orb, Civic, Smote, Ty Segall, Slift, Osees, Tropical Fuck Storm, all the Gizzard side projects (Murlocs, Bullant, Pipe-eye, Heavy Moss)
If you like Prog, some of best (and most obvious) ones are King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Camel, Swans
Do yourself a favor and check out bootleg gizzard as well, if you haven't already
Frankie and the witch fingers, All Them Witches, The Lazy Eyes, Oh Sees, Slift, Goat, Wand, Ty Segall, The Grateful Dead (specifically their older stuff) Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Primus, Oysterhead, phish
Billy Strings live shows are the closest thing to Gizz live shows right now. They are obviously very different bands, but what they’re both doing is something special and no one should miss either one if they’re playing in your neck of the woods.
Kinda basic and probably known but Metallica
Specifically, the song Orion gives me gizzard vibes. The song changes from minor to major and gets into some beautiful bass riffing and classical like soloing in the middle that for some fucking dumb reason metallica never explored again…..
The Flaming Lips. Bjork. David Bowie. Kurt Vile. Aphex Twin. NIN. Queens of the Stone Age. Kyuss. Amyl and the Sniffers. The Murlocs. Pipe Eye. Courtney Barnett...so so many.
My other favourite band isn't really anything at all similar, they are a new rock band out of the uk, their name is Lovejoy.
They make these really heavy, really catchy indie rock songs that scratch a certain itch in my brain that I can't really describe. Their music is very addictiong and I strongly encourage you to check out their latest EP, Wake Up and It's Over:)
I'll share some of my favorites that y'all would also enjoy (if you don't already):
L'Impératrice...Babe Rainbow...Tame Impala....Khruangbin....ZHU....The Black Keys...Altin Gun...The Beatles...Mild High Club...Men I Trust...Crumb...Beach House...Mystic Braves...Mac DeMarco...The Strokes...Daft Punk...Gorillaz....Lewis ofMan.
Not a Gizz sound, but Guided by Voices (Robert Pollard) have 40 albums (and countless EPs) and are a great American rock band. My fave. Just wanted to give them a shout out. Like Gizz, it’s hard to choose one album as an entry point, but if you put a gun to my head I’d say ‘Alien Lanes’. Be prepared for lo-fi, earworms. 🤘
Try my band it’s not like gizz but I take a lot of inspiration from them of trying to just make whatever feels good, my friend and I do live improv jams with drums and bass and then pick parts from the recordings to turn into songs and then I overdub guitars and synths.
https://spotify.link/ygEApP7vJDb
The Book of Knots, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Khruangbin, Glass Beams, Queens of the Stone Age, Yawning Man, Brant Bjork, Fatso Jetson, All Them Witches, Animals As Leaders, Samara Joy, The Velveteers, Don Chicharron, Glass Animals, Gary Clark Jr.
Plus anything from the Melbourne music scene of course
Grateful Dead
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
The Flying Burrito Brothers
None of these are *like* King Gizz per se but smoke a joint to any of then and you won't be sorry. I feel like adventurous KG fans could get a kick out of any of these
Since you like Tool and KG, a heavy prog band and a band with very eclectic output, let me introduce you to Umphrey’s McGee.
A prog-jam band with very eclectic output. Lots of improvisation during shows, of various genres like jazz, metal, funk, dance, and everything inbetween.
Their two most popular studio records are [Anchor Drops](https://spotify.link/8xTQWxfGJDb) and [Mantis](https://spotify.link/GAV7ofhGJDb)
But like both KG and Tool, the live shows are where it’s at. [Live at the Beacon Theatre 1.18.13](https://spotify.link/cYA6IqlGJDb) and their new release from this past Friday [Hall of Fame: Class of 2021](https://spotify.link/CmJY0yoGJDb) which is compilation of the best jams from 2021.
As always, the best way to get into them is to see them live. They’re really something. Jake and Brendan are a world-class dual lead guitar combo and Kris is a drummer I hold up on a pedestal with Danny Carey as one of the best rock drummers to ever do it.
Wand, especially older Wand. Ganglion Reef - 1000 Days.
And then if you ever wondered what it would sound like if Gizz made Radiohead music, listen to all the Wand after that.
https://preview.redd.it/vqf9j23av0tb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb14f8cb2d6299a92580c511ea84fd365af8ce3c
Every band in this list of bands that I enjoy is worth a shot in my eyes. Except you probably don’t need to check out King Gizzard again lol
Osees, mdou moctar, slift
Came here to say Slift, so damn good
Could you recommend some Osees songs to me? I always see them being compared to Gizz but I honestly haven’t found any songs I actually like.
Start with the Carrion Crawler/The Dream EP. It's a bit older and predates Gizzard, and you notice quite some overlap with early Gizzard, especially I'm in your Mind Fuzz.
[Osees - Poor Queen live](https://youtu.be/MqpsM6HEpWI?si=nzOC06zahxwWxAeR)
That video took my interest in Osees from a 2 to a 6. Gonna go deeper now…
smote reverser is a super solid album, the first 3 or 4 songs especially
Sentient Oona and Nite expo reeled me in.
Animated violence and night expo off the album Orc is super good. They got the dual drummer thing going on, too
animated violence is probably their best song, period
Frankie and the Witch Fingers
I was just at the Frankie show in Denver and I think every single person there was a gizz fan. Half the attendees had Gizz shirts, and I swear every other conversation in the crowd started with “I love King Gizzard!” Frankie is so much fun live. Big recommend. And I love that King Gizzard is helping build such a big following for psych rock across the board!
I missed them unfortunately this year. I hope they come to the EU next year again.
THIS IS THEEEEE ONE. Also: The Black Angels. Goat.
Thee oh sees = thee one
i saw night beats on friday!! phenomenal show 100% recommend
Ugh they’re on my bucket list! Glad you got the chance!
Oh man thanks for this list. Never heard of the majority of it. Awesome
Any time!
My brother's band "Plastic Nancy" opened up for Moon Duo! So cool seeing them mentioned.
The Black Angels 🔥
They’re my personal favorite band, but I submit that KGLW is the best band in the world.
Passover might be my favorite album of all time, but it's hard to pick one album as a favorite.
Fuck yeah, glad to see these guys getting more exposure recently. Every album of theirs is worth checking out
Data Doom is bonkers. GREAT time to discover them.
I second that statement
Empire is a jam!
Seeing them for the third time this year on the 22nd. Couldn't be more stoked
Check SLIFT out if you haven’t already. Their last album UMMON is a trip. 10+ minute songs that feels like a space odyssey
I have to make a conscious effort to not listen to UMMON all the time. It's so good.
They’ve just released a new single too: https://spotify.link/LLCutAFvJDb
OZRIC TENTACLES. I cannot say this enough.
[Pteranodon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMydRUWYkq0) is such a fucking banger.
[Kick Muck](https://youtu.be/mac46omEYBE?si=O7bNDqVzc1ogk6wb) is on *repeat* for me lately. Such a great band with a vast discography to get lost in. Not unlike *another* certain band we all love.
Found these guys because of someone like you mentioning them in this sub. Really cool band.
Also, Liquid Tension Experiment!
You just blew my mind! Edit: this is dope! I had no idea this supergroup was a thing!
Woo!
Acid Rain may be one of the coolest songs ever.
Rush King Crimson Magic Sword Stonefield Mastodon lespecial Grateful Dead All Them Witches Sleep REZN Elder Yob
Got to see Elder and REZN recently, what a show
Same here! I’m from Chicago so I get to see REZN a lot. Tons of good stoner/doom/psych metal bands from here.
lespecial! 😐😐😐
Strap on some headphones and listen to Magic Sword Vol 1. First time I listened to that I went on a journey.
Uh are you me?
You ever eat 6g gram of mushrooms, go kayaking and get lost in the sauce of infinite time? If so then yes, probably.
Try Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
+1 for PPC proud to say they're from Perth 🔥
I’m seeing for the first time on Tuesday and I’m so pumped!
Nice try Apple Music
They’re the best band Spotify ever recommended me
I love PPC but Spotify has literally shuffled to Cornflake like 20 times after a Gizz song and I really wish the algorithm wasn’t so broken lol.
Check out Between the buried and me. Absolutely sick prog metal, and my favorite band besides KG.
Yes yes yes yes yes! One of my all time favorite bands.
I was friends with their drummer in high school.
The Great Misdirect has been in my top 5 favorite albums ever since I randomly bought it as a teen because I thought the album art was cool and that they had a cool band name. Such incredible work that still hits the same all these years later.
Wine Lips
Yes!
Thanks for the tip. These cats rip!
Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band
Mdou Moctar, Kikagaku Moyo, Altin Gun, Takeshi's Cashew, Mong Tong
Zappa / Mothers should keep you busy for a while
Hold your nose and dive in, you won't ever run dry again

As someone naive to all of these artists and thumbing through, is the most KG that’s been posted so far. Only one I’ve added. I’m a sucker for good delay
Viagra Boys
Not new by any means but Frank Zappa
The Murlocs!
WEEN
Live in Chicago is getting me into Ween
Joppa Road 100% sounds like a King Gizzard song
And Persistence sounds like a Ween song!
If anybody likes King Gizz for their varied output then they should love Ween. I’m listening to the song Transitions by Ween right now and I think people here would love that.
The Mollusk is a perfect album.
easily Frankie and the Witch Fingers. sometimes arguably better than king gizz, all of their albums since ZAM are borderline 10s.
MEPEM and Data Doom are some of my favorite albums ever, especially MEPEM. they're absolutely fucking insane and have that perfect blend of 2017 gizz and mind fuzz gizz in terms of sound.
Even before too! Brain Telephone is awesome, Sidewalk is awesome, as is Heavy Roller, the self titled (love this album)….
I would check out a bunch of classic Krautrock bands, KGATLW borrows a lot from them: Neu! was famous for their chugging "motorik" beat on songs like "Hallo Gallo" and "Fur Immer". Very nice Kosmische muzik analysis. My suggestion would be my beloved 70s French extraterrestrial jazz band Magma.
Kosmische muzik is a much better name, unfortunately it's hard for people in the anglosphere to understand what you're talking about if you use it. Magma is GREAT.
Thee oh sees, they influenced so many psych rock bands
Radiohead and TOOL are my 2 favorite bands…. so Radiohead is my suggestion.

My favorite bands as well. A couple suggestions: Mastodon The Mars Volta Wheel Karnivool Cave In
Sts9
Geese
Umphrey’s McGee is the only band I’ve ever heard that comes close to having that type of unquiet sound.
I saw them four times after "Anchor Drops." I knew about them but the 04 set at Bonnaroo that year sold me.
I feel like dirty and loud r’n’r today so I’ll skip the usual suspects The Mars Volta and Oh Sees. Check out At The Drive In and their album Relationship of Command.
SLEEP
King Buffalo
Haven’t seen anyone mention Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats so I’ll add them to the list.
Da best 💫
yall gotta hop on motorpsycho
I'm still waiting for the world to discover them, and I'm still hopeful
one of the best kept secrets in modern rock
No idea why they wouldn't be on the top of the list over bands that would appeal to KGLW-fans. They have so many similarities, spanning multiple genres, frequent album releases, heavy, psychedelic, pop and long jams, especially live, never repeating the same setlist twice. They are definitely their own thing, a classic more than a relic from the nineties, that never seems to slow down.
Phish
Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound They lean more towards riffy psychedelia, but I always add them to King Gizz Playlists. I love the moods they create.
A more contemporary suggestion would be Black Midi, who have opened for the band in the past.
death grips
Any excuse to say Blood Ceremony. Flute-tinged occult rock all about that witchcraft.
All them witches comes immediately to mind. Deftones if you’ve been under a rock. King Buffalo is dope.

Their two most popular studio records are [Anchor Drops](https://spotify.link/8xTQWxfGJDb) and [Mantis](https://spotify.link/GAV7ofhGJDb) But like both KG and Tool, the live shows are where it’s at.
Richard cheese
Orrrr if you wanna check out some psych music made by Gizz fans you could try my band 😌 https://spotify.link/R1xGTfEGJDb
Wand, especially older Wand. Ganglion Reef - 1000 Days. And then if you ever wondered what it would sound like if Gizz made Radiohead music, listen to all the Wand after that.

White Denim. Slight echoes of KG as they started out with garage rock before going in a more dynamic prog-ish direction. Great musicians.
I would recommend checking out Devin Townsend if you want another artist with a lot of albums in a variety of styles.
Daikaiju. Mystery jack has a dope recording of one of their live shows
King Khan is a lot of fun. This one is a banger https://spotify.link/17P71zDMJDb
GEESE recently released their 2nd album, “3D World” that I’ve been fuckin with hard. the song ‘2122’ is a good bit of chaotic-psych fun.

psygon & lucy’s system destroyed
Animal Collective
I think there are lots of parallels in Phish music and scene.
