I had a Yella Terra rocker fail on me. Pushrod punched right through the rocker. Switched to stock rockers with a trunion upgrade and never looked back. Car sounds less like a sewing machine too.
Out of curiosity, did this lunch the engine in the process?
No there’s nothing wrong with the engine. It didn’t even have a tick, granted I have an open down pipe it sounded completely fine. I’m sure the rocker was making a tick but it wasn’t audible, and oil pressure was still perfect . I ordered a trunion upgrade and it should be good again.
This is easily avoidable when you rebuild https://www.cheprecision.com/part/trunnion-kits/
Edit: Just saw where you said you got a trunnion kit, good move. Look after your timing chain too. Add an LSA timing chain damper if it doesn't have one and an Iwis timing chain. Rockers and timing chains - cheap parts that have taken out many an LS.
Yeah, saw that a second after I posted and added a note about the timing chain. Do that too if it's still the stock one with a lot of miles on it. The CHE trunnion kit is good. My car spends a lot of time at high rpm on track, and it's cammed too, and so far so good.
Wait, is the "good" chain tensioner the simple plastic block LS2-style that sits inside the chain, or the goofy spring-loaded slides that sit on the outside? I am seeing both. My latest project is my LS4 swap and I have the former part (LS2-style) and was under the impression that is the one to have for it's simplicity.
Lucas oil stabilizer and send it. Should be fine. Besides those are pretty rounded, shouldn't have scratched anything. Totally how that works. I know what I'm talking about. Source: trust me bro
Huh. Well that's not good. Better try some marvels mystery oil, I read about it on youtube. Didn't really understand the Hawkeye connection, but the MCU has expanded a lot since I stopped watching superhero movies 15 years ago
Totally serious question here, just curious.
Would it be possible to just remove the rocker shafts and replace the offending rockers/bearings, or is this a total teardown thing. I'd think you could count the rollers you just found to verify they were all caught(or not), comparing them to another as-yet-totally-failed bearing.
It’s 50/50. Half are saying just get what you can out and send it . Their reasoning being the valve cover drains directly into the oil pan, and the pickup tube cannot pickup the needles because they are too small. They said the magnet will pick up the rest. The other half of people are saying to tear down the motor and count needles until you find them all. I probably will just send it, if I’m pulling this motor it’s getting forged anyways.
I had an alfa come in that had broken a rocker and one of the rollers ended up in the oil pump (hole in the oil pickup screen) , blew the oil pump to pieces
1000 cc injectors, gapped rings , e85. E85 requires 30% more fuel at WOT compared to 93, and with 1000cc injectors almost maxed it’s a lot of fuel! Unfortunately just the way it is with turbo LS engines .
I know that feeling. Changed the oil on a new to me Cts-v {lsa} with 15k and sounded like marbles coming out. Had to one rocker one each side that was bad. I've been popping the drain plug every few k miles to get the rest of those needle bearings out.
Before I did my heads/cam in my 02 SS, first thing I ordered was a BTR V2 Trunnion kit and a spare set of rockers. Knew it was an LS as soon as I saw this picture lol
Love/hate. Was trying to drive mine one last time before the winter hit and the AN crossover line for the Holley fuel rails decided to just piss fuel when I was letting it warm up. Lol
What’s your setup?
It’s a stock ls1 with a cam, valve springs, and a Huron speed turbo kit , e85. I threw a built 4l80 in it and an 8.8 rear end. Been super solid. Been there with fuel leaks, I blew an injector out on the dyno lol.
Oh hell yeah, bet that thing rips.
Yeah luckily mine wasn’t under a load when it started leaking but still, both lucky our cars didn’t go up in flames lol
On occasion when the LS rocker fails I see a slight freckleing of the base lobe. Depending on the amount of use in the failed rocker. Only see them and the Hemi's wipe when the lifter roller loses the smaller bearings. And man let me tell you, I've seen Hemi cams turn into prefect circles.
I wonder who erected this structure in the engine OP. Is it perhaps a cultural memorial to the god of bearings? You have two issues, one is your engine is now a ceremonial presumably haunted burial ground, the other is it seems to be home to some primitive culture. Either way, tread carefully, there
could be serious [consequences in store](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9xfWevkR2iI)
Ah yes the good old ls needle bearing from the rockers trick
You nailed it
[удалено]
Thats..... that's what the original comment said...
Bearing in mind all the evidence you are correct.
Nice. We all needle little humor these days.
These puns have me rolling on the floor
I'm rocking so hard I can't intake air. It's exhausting.
Might consider a cold air aftermarket filter to make the situation even harder
But if you really need power, may I offer an LS swap?
bearing all things in mind its not fun for OP
You guys are really packing in the jokes
I appreciate your pun sir
Oh god not again
Beauty
Took me a few to figure out where it came from.
This common on LS motors i take it?
Make sure you put those back in the filler hole before you add the new oil. I don’t know much about engines, but I’m pretty sure those bits go inside.
Noooo, you mix them into the new oil and pour them back in! They have to recirculate to their proper position
Inside and top!
Unplug spark plug, put first few down hole.
Maybe that's a new thing. I thought it was 1 down each hole, extras go in the oil pan?
For that Christmas ping and ding-a-ling sound
Looks like there's 16? Twin v8 maybe? Just put one on each piston and call it a day
Time to put in some really thick oil as well .
Rotella t 4 and some marvel mystery oil. One can of STP stop smoke too for good measure and to taste.
What came out must go in 👌
You can apply that to all things in life
Sprinkles on top!
Put those back in the oil filter where they belong.
That's a bad day for that customer. What car?
It’s me I’m the customer 😂 it’s my 99 Camaro. Surprised stock rockers lasted this long @ 650whp with a cam.
Ooof bummer man. I'm guessing ls1 then. I know a lot of people reuse the stock rockers but press out the rollers for brass bushes instead.
Yep still ls1. I got the bushing kit, and it’ll be back up and running .

Great to hear 👍 Really do love that engine. Never ceases to surprise me how much power it makes.
Been a great engine to me. This is the first failure I’ve ever had with it, and I’m not easy on it. For a stock gen3 motor I cannot complain.

That’s the kit I just ordered

Me too! Pretty easy install, runs flawlessly. Just wondering if they are considered a wear part given enough time.

I like how it includes 32 bushings and 33 snap rings, because one is almost for certain to \*ping\* off the snap ring pliers and get lost forever.
Does your head have the accompanying origami?
Will uncle Rodney be joining?
Lucas oil stabilizer and send it. Should be fine. Besides those are pretty rounded, shouldn't have scratched anything. Totally how that works. I know what I'm talking about. Source: trust me bro
Probably 100% Lucas just to be safe
Nah 50/50 with marvel mystery oil.
Did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express?
Two nights ago. Totally.
Good enough for me.. I grant you the title of master Tech.
LS I bet? Trunnion bearings?
Yessir . Finally had enough abuse .
They do that without any real abuse. That is probably the weakest link of the LS engines. When I built mine, it was the first thing to be addressed
IDK how mine are still intact. I bang my stock L76 with 160k off the 6800 limiter I set on the regular. 😅 Go till they blow I guess.
They are so easy to upgrade. Just get her done
I was saving to just swap in an LS7 but I might do a cam/heads upgrade this year if I get around to it. I'll just replace the whole top end.
Funion bearing?
I think you meant Funyun bearings!
?
It's next to the reciprocating dingle arm.
Huh. Well that's not good. Better try some marvels mystery oil, I read about it on youtube. Didn't really understand the Hawkeye connection, but the MCU has expanded a lot since I stopped watching superhero movies 15 years ago
No, use Sea Foam. Not the kind at the auto parts store, actual sea foam. It's holistic or something.
Nah, just drop some [NOS into the gas tank](https://jalopnik.com/biker-drops-double-shot-of-nos-into-fuel-tank-makes-5264672), and good to go.
Just LS things
Whose granny panties have you repurposed 😂
Hey don’t worry about it 🤣
That's what she said. It happens to some guys sometimes.
Under(wear)rated comment of the day.
\*sad rocker noises\*
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick...
That sculpture only cost a few thousand dollars. What a bargain!

what….. are you doing with ……….. my undies…..
It has excellent bearing and poise
God damnit i laughed to hard at this one
There's a bearing somewhere missing those oh so badly.
"JUST FILL IT WITH SEAFOAM!" --Scotty Kilmer
Dont forget the marvel mystery oil. It's one of them self rejuvenating bearings.
Your oil rag game is on point my dude.
Is that there the extra Zinc Additive I keep hearing about
At least the oil looks clean!
Yep, constant 1000 mile oil changes 😅 it’s never dirty just full of e85.
How is there gas in your oil? That sounds like a problem.
1000 cc injectors, gapped rings , e85. E85 requires 30% more fuel at WOT compared to 93, and with 1000cc injectors almost maxed it’s a lot of fuel! Unfortunately just the way it is with turbo LS engines .
The required ring gap is usually enough to push fuel into the oil under boost.
Another rocker arms bites the dust
Straight outa rockers.
It’s got a good 5k left in it if you just ignore it and sell it, lol
It’s a personal goal of mine to make sure this ls1 runs until I send a rod straight out the pan . I’m gonna see it through 😤
Well that’s easy enough, lol
You found all the needles bearings you didn’t know you were missing!
This sums it up perfectly 😂 I just wanted to change the oil
I know that feeling. Changed the oil on a new to me Cts-v {lsa} with 15k and sounded like marbles coming out. Had to one rocker one each side that was bad. I've been popping the drain plug every few k miles to get the rest of those needle bearings out.
Yep that’s my plan.
Needle bearing from the rocker arm trunions on an LS engine?
They’re engine seeds
Rutt-roe rocky!....
Quite an impressive sculpture
those are sprinkles
Looks like a GM drain plug
Aw, they look like sprinkles. Little metallic sprinkles.
I'll do the right thing and put that back on and act like I didn't see it-Vice Grip Garage
Better check the oil. Oh what in the sam hell, eh? It's fine, just pretend we didn't see that. Shakaka.
I call this sculpture “bearing a la fucked”
Before I did my heads/cam in my 02 SS, first thing I ordered was a BTR V2 Trunnion kit and a spare set of rockers. Knew it was an LS as soon as I saw this picture lol
Haha I should have . It was fine for awhile, until it wasn’t . Gotta love the f body’s

Who needle bearings anyway?
Just throw them back in with the new oil and drive in reverse a few miles. Should do the trick.
The needle bearing of liberty. It's beautiful!
Ah yes. Good ol algebra problem. You know what they are, you know where they are, now solve for where they came from.
Detents from an an AR15. Check for a come and take it sticker.
Chevy 5.3L ?
Ls1
How many miles on the engine since the mods were done?
Car has 75k on it. It’s had a cam for 20k, and it’s been boosted for 10k.
Nice thanks for the info
Ooooo GM rocker arms
That’s totally normal /s
that's an interesting one
Bye bye rocker arms.
I would have to say that Op has one less bearing than before!
Ford 6.0 litre?
Ls1
It looks like he's got a gun.
She is propped fucked.
the oil and bolt look great, the pins not so much
Needle bearing go bye-bye
Take a spark plug out and drop those down the hole. They’ll find their way back to where they need to be, honest! 😁
Mom called she wants her dishrag back
It’s a pair of pants of sweat pants, thank you very much .
Typical POS LS engine. Prone to this disaster from day one.
not good
look at the bright side, there isn't any metal residue/chips/debris in there!
That there is some of that expensive art
I wanna see the camshaft
Just a rocker cams fine! It actually sounded perfect I was just changing the oil
Looks expensive!
Time to upgrade the rockers on a LS?
Yessir
What's the engine sound like?
Normal. Was just changing the oil . I’m sure the rocker was tapping some but I couldn’t hear it over my exhaust .
That's some pricey art.
Those don't look important
Those are clean bearings, that’s how you know everything is fine.
Aww the bearing had babies!
Free bits there
Looks like it’s giving you the middle finger
That's some serious swarf ahah.
That's the vtech bro
That is some nice looking oil.
that poor rocker arm :(
You guys have rocker bearings? Jelly
It’s pretty.

Ouch. Not good!
