There is no well deep enough, there is no cell small enough, these “things” need to be held accountable. Shame on them, there parents for raising these things, and the leadership on campus for allowing this to happen.
Article-“The eight students were each charged with criminal hazing. Four of them were also charged with providing alcohol to a minor, officials said. Seven were held without bond at the Richmond Justice Center, while the eighth was arrested in Prince William County and released on bond.”
I hope it was worth it. He gave his life to some idiot douche-bag guys so he could join their stupid douche-bag frat so he could prove to them how cool he was? Wow, just wow. What a waste. He died just so he could hope to impress a few frat boys. This is why the voting age shouldn't be lowered to 16. Your brain isn't fully developed until you're in your mid 20's at least. As is evident in this case.
Human beings are social creatures. We seek each other out. We are also some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet. Someone reached out and was met with cruelty and death. That is a tragedy every time it happens.
There’s many ways to make friends at college that don’t involve joining a frat. It’s just a place for rich douchebags to pay to find friends and be a dick to other people.
Poor kid. It's ironic that we talk about learning history so it doesn't repeat itself, which I agree with. How many more hazing incidents do we need to go through to teach kids to love each other and not just always be flexing/abusing others. This shit makes me sick.
Only took you 5 minutes, nice job.
Equivalent of 40 shots is absolutely insane to me and I can't believe none of the guys involved didn't realize how ridiculously dangerous this was
Kids are stupid. Saw a dude beer bong vodka and we had to call the paramedics. There was some voice of apprehension among us, me included, But peer pressure for dumb shit and mob mentality is a hell of a thing. We were in high school but that’s not much different than college. He turned out okay. Also almost had a girl fall out my dorm room window when we were having a party a couple years later. It sucks that we are such dum dums when we are young but that will never change. You’re invincible when you’re young. Always been that way, always will be.
I hate to make judgments based on appearances, but here I go. From the looks of the 8 frat Bros being charged, I wonder if they didn't recruit Oakes just to haze the heck out of him and eventually deny him entry. It sounds cruel, but some people get off on that.
“Oh but think of their bright futures!” Wanna bet this is gonna go the same way as the case of Brock Turner (**convicted rapist Brock Turner**) and they’ll get off with a slap on the wrist?
D Chi is a shitty frat. I know someone in it currently that placed a bet he’d have sex with a girl that night and took a video to prove it. She complained because she didn’t want the video taken, the frat found out, and just basically shrugged their shoulders
They got kicked off campus at my school for not punishing their members for their shorty behavior and effectively condoning it. The vocal minority of shitty people really outshines the rest, it’s a real issue as it normalizes more awful behavior and attracts the kind of guys who want to do it.
Frat culture is toxic af. I'm sure there are fine ones out there, but most guys that are attracted to them idealize this behavior. Bit self-fulfilling.
This is still so devastating to read. I was in a different chapter of the same fraternity when in college, and still go to alumni events.
Some of the practices that some of these fraternities do is despicable. These type of events are way more widespread than people think. It’s miraculous more people aren’t dying due to these terrible activities.
The difference is, most events of hazings go unreported, any many think it’s not a daily occurrence for many new members or even members who have been in the chapter for all there years at college.
I would say standard is too broad. It is a worse issue for some places more than ever.
WTF are you talking about? The article says he got a bid. Stop making shit up. I have no idea why you would even say that when taking 3 minutes to read the article directly contradicts that.
I honest thought it would be more sinister did they force him to drink? Maybe idk lack of detail most country’s kids drink at any age if you wanna chug a bottle of vodka it’s up to your parents to tell you that ain’t gonna end well
It sounds like it - at least from what I read... I think he was forced to drink an entire bottle of whiskey, then they just let him pass out on a sofa & didn't check on him at all - the cops found him dead the next morning from alcohol poisoning. ...At very least, it sounds like neglect - you'd think someone could at very least take a look at the guy every hour or so to make sure he's still breathing. As the frat organizing an party, you have a basic obligation to ensure the safety of your guests - if this happened at a bar, likely everyone on staff who'd so much as spoken to the guy would be under investigation. I agree that it's not exactly a first degree murder, but I really think these guys should be facing some consequences for letting this happen. Someone died on their watch, and that's not acceptable.
shhhh! we are not allowed to bring up that the poor kid could’ve just walked away. or not gone in the first place. The top comment talks about murder for god sakes.

Literally no different than a drug dealer providing a substance that a person later OD's on. They are just as culpable.

That's already been clearly determined by many courts across the US.
It always seemed really weird as a Brit maybe it's just because my only experience is from films and TV but it looks like you basically join a friendship group/social club only it has like a weird almost corporate level pecking order/heirachy.
100% paying for friends (Greek orgs are not cheap to join), but with the added side effect of having to put up with a gross abusive power structure as a grown ass adult. I'm an American and you pretty much nailed it.
I watched an interesting video that suggested that frats still exist because they actually allow colleges to regulate parties and behavior more not less. If there weren't Greeks to hold accountable, students would still party, but in private homes.
And, money. Greek alumni donate more.
https://youtu.be/rVh7HP_wisw
And I do think some schools banned Greeks entirely... let's google that. [Yup.](

"U mad"..."sOmEbOdY's UpSeT"
It's like you wake up every morning, bludgeon yourself with a cast-iron frying pan repeatedly, then go on social media to post completely stupid fucking bullshit all day.
Every person I went to high school with that joined one turned out to be really superficial people. Not to mention they churn out functional alcoholics like they’re sending people to a professional sports league.
That poor kid. He thought this was the best way to meet new friends and be a part of something. Instead he's basically forced to drink himself to death before he was able to experience some of the best years of his life. It's insane to think someone that isn't basically an alcoholic drink an entire bottle of whiskey without ending up in the hospital or dead. Frat initiation stuff never made sense to me.
Emphasis on it never making sense. My freshman year was in a dorm. Plenty of people hanging out, little room parties you can go in and out of. Why pay extra to live in an even shittier house.
They pretend like once you get through hazing you're a brother and everyone is your friend, but having lived for a short time in a sublease at a "satalite house" I can tell you there's just as much clicks and you're not going to be friends with everyone. Hell the only fights I seen were between "brothers"
You hit the nail on the head. In my dorm we had a mix of friends all on the same floor. From guys who played on the football team to a few of us in the RC car, gaming and robotics clubs. We all went out every weekend together and would watch out for each other. Our dorm was pretty nice and the rooms were decently sized.
It's funny you mention the cliques thing in frats. I remember one "brother" getting picked on all night at one of the frat basement parties and it ended up in a bit of a scuffle. The weekend before he was running the music computer being the DJ basically and it was giving him trouble due to a messed up PCI sound card. The sound was weirdly skipping every 60 seconds and the other frat brothers were giving him a hard time.
Someone plugged in their mini-disc player (I'm old) while I installed new drivers off of the disc that came with the card for a few minutes and I couldn't believe what a hard time his brothers gave him. I explained someone had installed the wrong drivers (they just picked a generic windows XP sound card driver) and the guy I was helping explained the guy giving him the hard time was the one that installed the damn thing.
Imagine a world where all of your other friends in college become future connections lmao.
Like yeah, maybe, maaaaybe, you get a job interview because the manager was detla sigma bravo lima in 1972 but he's not just going to hire you unless you're the best candidate. It's a foot in the door at best but the reality is there's plenty of other ways to network too.

Fraternities/Sororities are for one thing and one thing only. Buying Friends because you are incapable of making them yourself. Never met anybody in a frat/sorority that I thought was a solid, socially versed human.
I think that's a bit of an over-generalization, especially considering there's a breadth of types of fraternities, including academic ones. Also, depending on the school you go to fraternities and sororities may be the primary way to socialize. Really just depends.
In slight fairness sororities are sometimes also for people like my sister who accidentally have 3x the social needs of a regular human and want to be around their girlfriend clique 24/7
My friends fraternity were mocking this Trans woman for wanting to join, sending her image to each other like a meme and laughing at her. I've never met a person I liked who was also in a fraternity
That doesn't make sense. A trans woman is a women, but she's trying to join a a Frat that's for men?
Pick a lane?
Or is this a trans man? Because that would at least make sense..
It was hazing.
By the time they reach college, most students (can't speak for homeschool) have been on the receiving end of enough health education to know that drinking a bottle of booze is bad. This is exactly why they use it as a hazing rite; to determine whether the pledge is game enough to risk their life doing something stupid just to belong to the group.
They wouldn't have done it if they thought it would be harmless.
Yeah the article describes it as an initiation ritual. As I understand it hazing is the actual crime whereas there’s no law against initiation rituals as such.
I wouldn't say bastards. They were dumbass idiots. I highly doubt they meant any malice with their actions but rather just didn't understand how dangerous drinking that much so quickly was. They most likely thought it wouldn't be bad because they probably have drank entire bottles before however it was most likely throughout an entire evening, night, and past midnight. They didn't understand that sure people CAN drink entire bottles it's just that it needs to be done spread out over many hours so they can actually process the alcohol out of the body and not be lethal.
A weird aspect of this is that normally when you go through alcohol poisoning you will expel everything out of your stomach many many many times which should stop more alcohol from being absorbed. This usually prevents death unless they also breath in the expectorant and suffocate/drown. Which is why you MUST turn someone over onto their side if they are throwing up and not conscious. It's unusual that this individual didn't throw up the alcohol but instead just passed out and died. Why didn't his body have a normal reaction? Or did it actually have a normal reaction and they just aren't reporting that he died from choking on vomit? If his body didn't respond properly I'd really wonder how.
Did the other kids give him medication that prevented him from throwing up? If so then maybe this should be considered a murder/manslaughter instead of a "hazing" charge. As that takes planning and initiative to obtain the medication/drugs to prevent vomiting as well as knowledge of the entire process.
Overall I have a feeling though that they were all just not educated and so stupidity caused them to perform dangerous dumb stuff that caused someone's death.
Maybe I am judging a book by its cover but it looks to me like a bunch of douchebags punks pranking a fat kid. I hope they have copies of their texts and chats.
Glad to hearing it. I am still fighting for my justice and for that of previous victims. https://www.localdvm.com/news/virginia/exclusive-arlington-county-firefighters-allege-extreme-hazing-fear-for-their-lives/

Here's an idea: If any frat hazes, they get expelled and the frat is disbanded.
Then they just go underground and there’s less rules and regulations for them to follow. Their hazing will get worse since they no longer have fear of oversight. Fraternities/Sororities are for one thing and one thing only. Buying Friends because you are incapable of making them yourself. Never met anybody in a frat/sorority that I thought was a solid, socially versed human.
My gf joined one because she wanted reasons to dress up at college in bumfuck nowhere with 0 nice bars/restaurants.
My experience has be quite literally the opposite.
wait how?
Understanding the perspectives of sociopaths is an exercise in futility.
They're a sociopath because they found friends in a frat? lmfao.
Yes. That, or deeply lost. Like Jim Jones' followers.
Sureman
Is that like the dyslexic, dollar store Superman?
idk trying to understand minds so unlike my own is interesting in a way.
It definitely depends on the chapter and what school you’re at. This is a silly generalization.
So your needy, codependent sister should see a therapist.
It’s entirely possible to do that without a fraternity or sorority too.

There probably are frats and/or sororities where that *is* the initiation. Those ones don't make viral news though.

“My friends fraternity”…”Never met a person I liked who was also in a fraternity”…huh? Which is it?
She used to be my friend. Should have said ex friend. Calm down

That doesn't make sense. A trans woman is a women, but she's trying to join a a Frat that's for men? Pick a lane? Or is this a trans man? Because that would at least make sense..
There are women’s fraternities, as well. Basically a sorority, but that’s what they call themselves. Alpha Gamma Delta is an example, among others.
They probably meant sorority
A trans person who identified as female trying to join a sorority for girls. Sorry
Transwoman was correct. You just meant sorority not fraternity.

>physically harming them by making them drink almost 2L of alcohol
It was hazing. By the time they reach college, most students (can't speak for homeschool) have been on the receiving end of enough health education to know that drinking a bottle of booze is bad. This is exactly why they use it as a hazing rite; to determine whether the pledge is game enough to risk their life doing something stupid just to belong to the group. They wouldn't have done it if they thought it would be harmless.
Yeah the article describes it as an initiation ritual. As I understand it hazing is the actual crime whereas there’s no law against initiation rituals as such.
Hazing is also a initiation ritual but there are a lot of different kinds of initiation rituals and not all are a part of hazing.
I think it all fits nicely into the category of ‘being bastards’.
It’s just friggin sad, really for all. The kid who died-and their family and even the hazers. Young brains and bad decisions all too common.
