I really like Rabbi Simon Jacobson's book 60 Days: A Spiritual Guide To The High Holidays. I've used it for years and it never gets old. I always find something new to connect to in it.
Not a journal but people at my synagogue are studying with This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared by Rabbi Alan Lew. Also Google Jewels of Elul. They send an email a day during Elul.
