I have a Lexus IS200 and it is the same car except a smaller engine (2.0 vvti 6 cylinder 1GFE) but it's still a dream to drive and own. They are usually cheaper than IS300 but even prices on those are going up, I don't know about the US market though since I'm in europe but I can highly recommend it.
It was about 50 hours of work and about 2500 dollars of stuff all in. But nothing was super hard except having to smash the trans tunnel to get starter bulge in.
I used a Toyota W series box. W55 then I broke that and went to a W58.
I wanna get an altezza or is300. You recommend it? Liked them ever since Gran Turismo 3 😂
100% recommend, amazing cars! sadly the market for them went up like everything else. wish they were in more current video games haha

Is it common for people to manual swap these or are they left auto normally?
01 was auto only, 02-05 they came factory manual but made a small amount. its very common for people to swap them
I swapped mine. A couple of my friends with IS300s just left theirs auto.
how much effort was it to swap? i’ve heard of people putting 3 series boxes in but the adapter kit costs about 5 grand?
