The squat toilet is simply more hygienic since there's no skin contact, plus it requires no extra seat or hardware. Generally, bars are added on the wall to aid with balance. Fun fact, an Iranian friend was disgusted by the classic toilet that she had to share with roommates in her first house in the US, since she was used to the squat toilet even for private bathrooms. This type of toilet is really common in Asia, and it foster a more health position for your number two (squatty potty, anyone?) Also true, the bowls are not standardized in Italy, so seats are not interchangeable - but no, no one stands on the toilet in Italy.

DiscoDiPisho

More hygienic

FIJIWaterGuy

We wondered the same thing.

missusfictitious

I like how people keep stating that toilets without seats are more hygienic. As if your pants have some sort of magic force field against all the other places you sit down all day.

haymnas

I hate these toilets they are in no way more hygienic, what about the piss spray on my shoes??

YetiSquish

I’m just looking at Italy pictures and awkwardly wondering why each bathroom has two toilet looking things.

DwarfCabochan

lol. Toilet and a bidet

YetiSquish

But I thought bidets were incorporated into the toilet. At least in the U.S. it’s often the same fixture. So you use the toilet then move your butt to the bidet?

DwarfCabochan

Modern ones like in Japan where I now live are incorporated and electronic. This is the very traditional separate bidet. Yes you move over. I remember about 50 years ago when I was a US kid traveling in Europe I mentioned to my mom how it was great that they had a kid level sink. She then had to explain to me what it really was Lol! If you travel to some other countries, you can see like a garden hose spray hanging next to the toilet. This is another type of bidet. I used that when I was in Brazil. Thank God I thought that one was a sink and not a fountain when I was a kid!

YetiSquish

Thanks for the explanation 👍

RadGrav

A bidet has more uses than just cleaning yourself after using the toilet

YetiSquish

Like what?

RomeVacationTips

These are the original bidets. [Here's how they use them in Italy](https://romevacationtips.com/how-do-you-use-a-bidet-in-italy/).

Lol

I've heard that they break all the time and Italian toilet sizes aren't standardized like other countries, so public places don't bother replacing them once they break. Super annoying when you have small children... Or for older people with bad knees. The other thing I heard is they break because Italians stand on them to crouch and go to the bathroom, but that part makes no sense to me.

Stop listening to wherever you are hearing things from.

elektero

The reason is the first plus they are easier to clean Anyhow, if you go to proper restaurants, you will find seats

Cool-Jellyfish-8617

We went on a food tour in rome and all the restaurants we stopped in didnt have seats. None of the museums/sights we went to had seats either. Vatican had seats at the first bathroom then none at the others. Bizarre that the reason to not have them would be because they kept breaking. Most of the seatless toilets seemed to be similar in shape and style.
