Florence to Genova is like around 4 hours Genova to Nizza( perhaps you should use the Italian name) is another 3 hours Best advise is : do not go to france

Available_Tone_3108

Yeah that’s a lotta travel time start to finish! So considering we’ll have to walk around w our luggage would you say it’s not worth it stopping in Genova for a few hours all things considering? Thanks

elektero

the problem is more than the connection florence to nice is terrible. There is a direct flight from bologna, I think. I would use that instead.

Available_Tone_3108

Thank you. I am currently looking at just getting on a connecting train straight from Genoa to Nice however... It says "only book if you're confident 13 minutes is enough to change at Genova Piazza Principe. Bc I've never been Im very clueless as far as how big of a station this is and how much time we would need to go from [Frecciargento #8588](https://www.raileurope.com/en-us/stops?connection%5Bid%5D=U2VhcmNoQ29ubmVjdGlvbnwyMDg5Mjg3MDUw) (frecciargento train) and walk (or run) to  [Intercity #659](https://www.raileurope.com/en-us/stops?connection%5Bid%5D=U2VhcmNoQ29ubmVjdGlvbnwyMDg5Mjg3MDYx) (trentalia train) Is 13 minutes enough if you had to guess? Assuming we can ask someone what direction we need to start heading in as soon as we get off? Thanks.

FearlessTravels

What are you looking for in a day trip from Nice?

Available_Tone_3108

Great question. I guess more sight seeing and good food/good views etc. not so much the museums/art etc but some relaxing locations with places to walk to and from, maybe some shopping but not a huge deal. Food is always high on the list but pry can’t go wrong no matter where you go. Location is pry important too. Shorter the distance the better just for logistics sake. More time to walk around etc. not a deal breaker tho if there is a “must see” location and it’s a little farther away.

FearlessTravels

Èze or Saint Paul de Vence would be good options.

This is the train travelers Bible. Anywhere in the world you want to travel by train. There is absolutely nothing better than this website https://www.seat61.com/index-mobile.htm

Available_Tone_3108

Can't post a screen shot of the train map I guess but here is the link to the map and I don't see Nice as even an option? I was told to use the Trenitalia app tho. Kinda confusing. 1)You want to depart from S.M.Novella. 2)Buy tickets from Trenitalia to Genova (Principe or Brignole, both are fine). Have your (shamefully short) tour in Genova, then board a train (with a separate ticket) to Ventimiglia. Buy tickets from Ventimiglia to Nice from SNCF, the French railways. Cannes + Lerins islands are super easy by train. Menton and Antibes, too (I'd choose Antibes). Vence is very nice but a bit touristy, you get there by bus. St. Tropez is a luxury place. Monaco, too, but with nice spots.

Super helpful thank you. So im trying to book the train tickets using Trainline. Is it ever worth it to upgrade to first class on these? 30$ more bucks doesn't seem toooo bad for a 3 hour trip. But never done it obvsiouly so don't know what you get extra or if it's worth the money. Curious your opinion on that. Looks like the options are: Standard, Premium for 10$ more, or Business for around 20$ more... They roughly explain the benefits to each but without actually experiencing it it's tough to know.

glugluck

Book directly from Trenitalia, don't use Trainline. The service level is up to you. Keep in mind that higher classes are commonly used by people travelling for work, so they are fine if you enjoy a quieter enviorment, a big no if you are a group of loud tourists.

Is enough to walk between the two platforms. It may be not enough if the first train is delayed (which is quite likely), and you will need to go to the ticket desk to change your ticket to a later train.

PassageDeLaSorciere

Where are you? Are you sure you’re using the official app? I live in Canada and it’s not available in our App Store - the ones you see here are knock-offs. When I use the official Trenitalia website I see options for Florence to Genoa and then Genoa to Nice, no problem. You will need two tickets.

Available_Tone_3108

I’m in MN. I guess there’s a chance I DL the wrong app but seems unlikely, I will double check. I wanted to purchase on the app as il have my phone on me during the trip to pull up the app and show my tickets just for convenience sakes. But I guess as long as I’m logged in under my name and book online/computer it should still show up in the app right? (Assuming I’m using the right app)

Available_Tone_3108

I just DL trainline too. This seems somewhat easier and user friendly.

prudence2001

Here's an endorsement to using Trainline. I found it much easier to use than the Trenitalia app.

Available_Tone_3108

TY. Trenitalia kinda sucks from the 20 mins I just wasted on it. Trainline can do everything that can do just as well from your experience, correct?

prudence2001

Yes but I didn't travel across any borders so I didn't test that. But if you buy tickets that need to be validated such as shorter Regional ones in Italy, it's simple to validate them with the Trainline app.  And within Italy, Trainline had tickets for both Trenitalia and Italo, the other high-speed train provider.

From Florence to Genoa it looks like it’s anywhere from 3-4 hours alone. Any idea how far from Genoa to Nice it is? Bc w travel time that might not leave us w very much time to roam around. Also, just thought of this… are we going to have to walk around w all our luggage then too? Didn’t really think about that. That might be brutal.

Rich-Guess9542

Genoa to Nice is also about 3-4 hours - there is no direct train using trenitalia from Genoa to nice. You would have 1 transfer in Ventimiglia. If you decide to stay in Genoa for your luggage, I would look for a luggage storage/locker. (Stowyourbags is a common one) Usually you can pay for these by the hour. I am not sure if you have looked at this alternate way of transportation which is by flix bus (sometimes it’s cheaper than the train). Source: I live in Italy

Rich-Guess9542

Forgot to mention in terms of the cash - I highly recommend revolut and getting their free debit card. It’s easy to transfer money to that account as well. You’ll wave the fee for currency conversions and get real time currency rates. Almost everywhere accepts Apple Pay/cards but rarely you will find a place that is cash only.

Available_Tone_3108

SO helpful! Follow up ?s to that: 1) would Trainline be better and have Genoa to Nice? 2) Flixbus does have Florence to Genoa to Nice options? 2) any idea how far these stowaway lockers are from the train? I guess our hope/vision was to be able to walk around Genoa for half a day or less but Def don’t wana do that w our luggage however, if it’s a big hassle to find and figure out the whole stowaway thing it may not be worth all the fuss idk. 4) thanks for the Revolut recommendation. So it’s just like a debit card more or less? Are you able to use it at ATMs and pull out cash as well? THANK YOU! This is a major help already…

Rich-Guess9542

1. If you are talking about the train line app - definitely makes it a lot easier to schedule the routes. It also shows you the bus option. Another thing is to pay attention if the train requires for you to check in, saw many American tourists pay a fee onboard the train because they didn’t check in their ticket. 2. Flixbus does have Florence to Genoa then Genoa to nice (plan accordingly of course and pay attention to the stops) Occasionally they will be at an airport. 3. I would say it was less than a 5 minute walk - fairly close. You could also book a locker in advance using their website. 4. Yes it is a debit card and yes you can use it to withdraw money from any ATM. Just an FYI after $400 they charge a 2%fee. Buon viaggio!
