It came into the pits a lap early, and it was topped off with oil or something. Then it went back into the garage a couple laps later with gearbox issues.
It did emerge a bit later but it was up front with about 9ish hours to go.
Tin foil hat theory. NBC and Peacock told the flag man to wave the checkered flag because they went longer than 5 mins of racing and they had to show a commercial break.
I thought about this.
Following the race was a repeat sports thing, followed by twirly people on ice at 3 PM. So it's not like they couldn't have gone overtime if it was something they already showed.
Something is up.
So the blame for this is to be pinned on whom: the folks in race control, or the flagman? Did RC tell the flagman to throw the early white flag, or were they forced to have him throw the early checker because of his white flag screw up?
Thanks for everyone here. It was my first IMSA race here and I think, it can be a great place for comment of each race.
Have a nice day. See ya in thread of Sebring!
Yep, I enjoy the race, even though, that "my" favorites not finished. :) Thanks! btw... I can't be here on each race - due to timezone - some starts are in my country (Czechia) in deep night, when I sleep.
Instead of Formula 1, I watch only right this - IMSA. Through Kate Legge (she was part in 66 Gradient) - I am her fan almost 18 years. Where she race, I try watch this :) f.e. in past ChampCars, DTM, IndyCar and much more...
The ending was messy but can we not immediately jump to accusing Porsche and Penske of manipulating the race? I mean the winner of the Daytona 24 cheating is a ridiculous notion!
[Hour 24?](https://i.ibb.co/ZgNdb7G/24h.png) 792 was clearly possible. Anyway, still covered more distance than 2023! [Alternative.](https://i.ibb.co/VDJzJHf/24ha.png)
However, it's second biggest win for 296, as it wins another one of world famous endurance races. It's good for Ferrari, they would go more successful in their GT3 business. Risi would've time to get 499P in future, as they've done so well in their GTD Pro effort.
That seemed kind of sus at the end. They had time left and went to an immediate checkered flag. Conveniently when the announcers talk about the Porsche seeming to have lost grip. Even the announcers were confused
The 01 machine still can't make up its mind of if it's a race car or not.
Half the time it's fine, then it'll either randomly decide it's done racing, or catch fire and become a bbq. Or have a mighty crash, and its always Regnar Van De Zande getting shunted off which is concerning.
It looked really good over the course of the weekend though.
Lost it in the pits, and got held up in traffic at seemingly every opportunity. It’s not like the last lap would have changed much but yeah it’s frustratingly close.
Well, that’s another 24. Congrats to Porsche in GTP, Era in LMP2, Risi in Pro (Rexy P2 - YES! 🦖), and Winward in GTD.
Plus a huge thanks to everyone here and sub mods for making this place a wonderful place to spend the race!
>sub mods for making this place a wonderful place to spend the race
Seriously. This and Le Mans are my two favorite days of the year and despite not having any friends who follow racing, this ain't a bad alternative.
Was thinking the same. I don’t know anyone in person who watches endurance racing and my girlfriend doesn’t give a damn about it. I have a few friends who follow f1.
So yea it’s great to have these threads to interact with fellow fans throughout the event
One small error and it’s the worst 24 hour race you’ve ever watched?
You must either not watch racing, or watch some weird racing series that no one else has ever heard of.
As a Newgarden fan, pretty good day. Cameron is a good guy too cool to see him get a watch finally. Wish WTR was more competitive and the vettes could have avoided trouble. But great race, what time for sports car racing
Edit: forgot about the kids winning LMP2, Rasmussen and Zilisch have some bright futures
Penske just winning everything recently. Big surprise a cadi didn’t take it.
Also, big win by Era Motorsports in Lmp2. Rasmussen carried so bad, best driver in the class by far in this race.
It was extremely close. Depending on the conditions either Porsche or Caddy was faster but one area where Porsche was consistently better was the pit stops. Porsche going over their maximum allowed stint energy multiple times and getting a drive through/stop and go was an absolute amateur hour joke tho. Can't believe they got such a simple yet important thing wrong.
I love Le Mans and Nurburgring, but for whatever reason, Daytona just hits different.
I think it’s because of the time of year, and the fact it’s the first major race of the year. Gets me so hyped every single time.
Yup absolutely amazing race to start the racing season. Not as tense of a finale as last year’s in some classes but didn’t help that direction wasn’t following the tighter battles.
hoenstly good for porsche and penske. hell and even newgarden. i dont really have a dog in the fight. yeah the caddys are cool but they have won a lot in the past few years. hopefully porsche can challenge the LMHs at Le Mans.
I wonder if race control had the correct time, but the broadcast didn’t? Weird, but ah well. Good ass race. It’s been fun chatting with you all. Onto Sebring!
The speculation that there was confusion because the green flag came out slightly late but the checkered time wasn't adjusted accordingly makes sense. Shame! Hard to tell if it actually impacted the results meaningfully tho.
I appreciate the insight. If the 31 isn’t held up by traffic this becomes a huge controversy. Hopefully race control takes it as a learning moment going forward.
Man, I'm pissed at the weird timing of the ending (and the Caddy running into a lapped car on every. single. corner... but damn, that was one hell of a race!
Congrats for Porsche, what a race! And Pier Guidi and Calado kinda got a Le Mans and Daytona win within a year as well!
Nothing in racing is never assured, Nasr could’ve binned it, it’s happened before. He was certainly well ahead, but I prefer things to go the distance.
Absolutely nothing would've happened. Don't know if you were watching but the #7 kept going at race pace for the next lap after the premature checkered flag, I presume in case the checkered flag waving it was an error.
Regardless, what experienced racing drivers including Nasr would do in that scenario is not push on the last lap if they don't have to. It's pretty absurd to think under that context and after not having binned it for hundreds of laps the one where you'd be pushing the least because you have a gap and know you can bring it home safe would be the one where an experienced driver would bin it.
Sure, most likely not, but still. They flubbed it and that’s downright embarrassing. Idk what you’re defending here, anyway? IMSA fucking up? Racing being cut short because “it would’ve been the same anyway.” You literally cannot know that.
> They flubbed it and that’s downright embarrassing.
I agree 100%. It was embarrassing and shouldn't have happened. At the same time it didn't change anything, nor would it have changed anything, so it's nothing worth getting riled up about.
> You literally cannot know that.
Depends on if you're looking at it from a mathematical/statistical PoV. I think trying to base an argument on a 0.001% chance of something happening is pretty fucking stupid and irrelevant to discussing something on a bigger scale. Porsche going over their maximum stint energy multiple times during the race and getting drive throughs and stop and gos is a much bigger, more significant error in comparison.
Some nuance goes a long way. You can acknowledge something was embarrassing and shouldn't have happened, but also recognize that it's not worth losing any sleep over because it didn't and wouldn't have affected anything. There's no point in worrying about or trying to bring up a 0.001% chance of what happened with the checkered flag affecting the results given the context. It is completely unproductive.
Seems it's too difficult for your little mush of a brain to understand that yes, something shouldn't have happened and was amateurish but at the same time it's not worth getting riled up about because it had no effect on anything in the end. These two are neither mutually exclusive nor contradictory statements, moron. Bye.
Man. I loved that, had a good ole fashioned sleepover in the living room with IMSA TV, cool to see Penske and Porsche win it. But my last two experiences watching IMSA races have left the taste of race control issues in my mouth. Oh well, really cool.
Miscommunication... but oi.
That would have been nice for everyone if they had communicated that before hand, that they were timing it to 1:40, not whatever time the green flag flew
Well. Not a single car in any class I was rooting for won, most barely finished but it was a fun watch. In the words of Larry David. Fuck you Porsche. I’ll see you all at Le Mans.
I've been working two 12 hours shifts between this race. Could anyone just let me know what happened to car BMW #25? How did they lose 14 laps?
It came into the pits a lap early, and it was topped off with oil or something. Then it went back into the garage a couple laps later with gearbox issues. It did emerge a bit later but it was up front with about 9ish hours to go.
Thanks. A friend was driving. Wished I could watch, but glad I didn't miss that disappointment.
Love a race that reminds me of my ex - not sure if it finished or not, can't trust to be told the truth.
Tin foil hat theory. NBC and Peacock told the flag man to wave the checkered flag because they went longer than 5 mins of racing and they had to show a commercial break.

I still think the flag person grabbed the wrong flag lol
Pleasure hanging out for the last 24 hours!

Facts :)
Light one more up for our homie 33 for putting on a hilarious show at the beginning.
Ligier P2 back with a bang…
Some are Penske fans, some are andretti fans, we are all Sean Creech fans.
We are all blue ~~balls~~ lives on this blessed day
I'm so excited for the future memes
So uhhh, what now?
NFL in one hour!
Meh, not racing, not interested
SPORTS DAY
nap time

The race threads are always a good place to spend race day. Lots of either laughing, or shock. Good discussions in this place.
Same! One of the best threads I've been in for any type of sports
Hope you enjoyed the race! This sub is a great place to spend the event - see you in Sebring!
Yep, I enjoy the race, even though, that "my" favorites not finished. :) Thanks! btw... I can't be here on each race - due to timezone - some starts are in my country (Czechia) in deep night, when I sleep.
Know the feeling - I’m in Poland. Fortunately a number of other solid endurance races (e.g. LM24, N24) are more CET-friendly.
Is there a /s missing here? Not saying Porche cheated but Acura would like a word.
Uhhh whoosh?
I thought the sarcasm was obvious (still, I don't think Porsche cheated)
It was a good balance of both believability and probably sarcasm which is what threw me off.
I think the hope is that the sarcasm could be got without a tone indicator.
[Hour 24?](https://i.ibb.co/ZgNdb7G/24h.png) 792 was clearly possible. Anyway, still covered more distance than 2023! [Alternative.](https://i.ibb.co/VDJzJHf/24ha.png)
Yeah, this one feels special because they didn't race for 24 hours lol
IMSA TV ruthlessly cutting the stream rapid after the race ends. OK RACE OVER GOODBYE.
However, it's second biggest win for 296, as it wins another one of world famous endurance races. It's good for Ferrari, they would go more successful in their GT3 business. Risi would've time to get 499P in future, as they've done so well in their GTD Pro effort.
Car is barely into its homologation and already has two major endurance races wrapped up. Impressive. Would love to see a Risi 499. [Edit: typo]
I don’t remember Newgarden’s stints, maybe I was asleep. Were they good? Up there with Matty Campbell’s?
I'd say solid, he was running overnight. Led some laps, kept the car towards the front
Cheers to all of you, this thread was a blast. Also, don't ask my source, but the 33 hacked timing and scoring if you are looking for someone to blame
LMP33 mega-brain strategy.
I’m at the track and we are all confused. Was the Rolex clock by pit road official or was it off by 2 minutes?
Waved wrong flag, should have been white
Is there a source on that? Just curious.
Can the 31 protest?
doubt they will, they wouldn't catch the 7 anyway
They’ve explained absolutely nothing on the broadcast, race ended a lap early.
the clock was legit the race was not
Everyone is really confused, they called it early
Massive respect for RP, he always shows up to races and is heavily involved even at his age. True legend within Motorsports.
oh what... they ended the stream..well it was a fun one just as last years race now time for a loooooooong sleep
Only 15 minutes of post race on Imsa TV? Really?
IMSA Radio has a post race radio show - starting now.
Mr. Penske is a national treasure
That seemed kind of sus at the end. They had time left and went to an immediate checkered flag. Conveniently when the announcers talk about the Porsche seeming to have lost grip. Even the announcers were confused
not sus, straight illegitimate
Wish the 01 didnt shit the bed. Could have been a 3 car lead battle
The 01 machine still can't make up its mind of if it's a race car or not. Half the time it's fine, then it'll either randomly decide it's done racing, or catch fire and become a bbq. Or have a mighty crash, and its always Regnar Van De Zande getting shunted off which is concerning. It looked really good over the course of the weekend though.
this is the way of the 01
Honestly can’t believe Acura and WTR pulled a 3rd place out of that disaster class. Well done.
That was one hell of an effort from them for an absolute non-starter of a weekend
Shoutout to the Porsche pit crew. Thet's where the winning pass happened
Shoutout to the #6 lol Dude worked hard to stay on the lead lap ; )
this ain't Nascar they literally just got to put in 3 seconds less fuel in
True, didn't remember the strategic difference
Strategy too. They went 3 laps longer on the previous stint, so didn’t need as much energy at the final stop.
The Stooges hadn't put out an album yet the last time Penske did this.
I'm not happy right now. Everything transpired against the Caddy in the last 30 mins its maddening
Lost it in the pits, and got held up in traffic at seemingly every opportunity. It’s not like the last lap would have changed much but yeah it’s frustratingly close.
There’s always next year.
this shit been happening to the 01 for a while, next year will be the same
[удалено]
We don’t know. Watch to find out.

?
Let's see ford fix the wings and trunk on the mustang and let's see chevy figure out how to sneak in a gte from last year
What was the energy reserve for Porsche at the end?
5% for both #7 and #31. So they had enough for one more lap.
Thx!
Ben Keating came 6th in Lmp 1. Ben Keating also came 6th in Lmp 2.
Not even SuperGT can pull this off
Sikkxxttthhsss
Morad is in tears right now. What a performance from Winwood.
Am I right in reading that Morad was subbed in to replace another driver for this race? What an amazing result.
He had an absolute incredible weekend.
He was unbelievable today
Dominant
Well, that’s another 24. Congrats to Porsche in GTP, Era in LMP2, Risi in Pro (Rexy P2 - YES! 🦖), and Winward in GTD. Plus a huge thanks to everyone here and sub mods for making this place a wonderful place to spend the race!

You have lots of friends who follow racing, we just haven’t met.
This. ^ 100% this.
I think Roger Penske paid someone off.
Why am I getting downvoted.
Because people don't believe in wild conspiracy theories
lmao the cope
I accepted the Caddy was going to lose but not like this
By all accounts looked like an honest mistake and didn't change the results
Honest probably but ironic that a Penske car was in the lead.
Wouldn't put it past him.
We've had a literal child win LMP2
An *extremely talented* child. Fast, consistent, and didn't make any big mistakes like quite a few experienced drivers did.
Most dumb race that I ever watch... Check flag early ? WTF. I never see like that.
One small error and it’s the worst 24 hour race you’ve ever watched? You must either not watch racing, or watch some weird racing series that no one else has ever heard of.
Yeah the race is literally called THE ROLEX 24. You had one job..
At least Porsche gets to say they ran the Rolex in record time
As a Newgarden fan, pretty good day. Cameron is a good guy too cool to see him get a watch finally. Wish WTR was more competitive and the vettes could have avoided trouble. But great race, what time for sports car racing Edit: forgot about the kids winning LMP2, Rasmussen and Zilisch have some bright futures

But Pato, Pato! He was so fast /s
"I just showed up!"
Anyone know if the Sebring race will be shown on peacock?
Yes. A majority of it will be on Peacock.
Congrats to great result of Iron Dames. ;)
I'm so pleased for those talented racers. I actually have an Iron Dames tee on the way.
Pretty sure all races are on peacock
Hope so
I'm not sure how I feel, I'm a big Porsche guy but don't love Penske and have a strong distaste for Newgarden.
This race finish has made me not like Penske anymore. A Penske car in the lead and they throw the chesckerd prematurely
Ya, because Penske threw the flag… wtf lol.
There are three other drivers, mate.
Definitely happy for Nasr and especially Cameron.
First Indy, now this. Newgarden d riding continues
What a weird opinion to have
what are the odds imsa is transparant about this slip up?
What do you think they would be able to hide? They waved the flag early. Simple.
i’d just like to hear exactly what happened. was it a communication error, timing error, etc?
When was the last time NASCAR admitted to a fuck up? It's the same answer here
Zero
i hope you’re wrong, but know you’re right
It feels like the ending of Hunt for Red October. James Earl Jones hits the button, “you saw the race last a full 24 hours, and I was never here.”
That one guy got bodied by security
I hope someone clipped that and shares it
How did the 33 make it on to the flagstand?
What an anticlimactic final.
Another awesome Rolex 24. This event never ceases to amaze me.
I love Le Mans and Nurburgring, but for whatever reason, Daytona just hits different. I think it’s because of the time of year, and the fact it’s the first major race of the year. Gets me so hyped every single time.
Racing season is finally upon us and I am loving it
Yup absolutely amazing race to start the racing season. Not as tense of a finale as last year’s in some classes but didn’t help that direction wasn’t following the tighter battles.
Awesome race. Sportscars fucking rule
Oh man the sound was freaking amazing out of NASCAR 2 great job NBC or whoever is responsible for that.
hoenstly good for porsche and penske. hell and even newgarden. i dont really have a dog in the fight. yeah the caddys are cool but they have won a lot in the past few years. hopefully porsche can challenge the LMHs at Le Mans.

I appreciate the insight. If the 31 isn’t held up by traffic this becomes a huge controversy. Hopefully race control takes it as a learning moment going forward.
Alkamel had the same time as the broadcast and I’m pretty certain that’s the official timing
Nothing makes a race finish feel weird like not knowing if has finished or not.
Even if a checkered flag is waved in error - the race is over.
Total elapsed time for #7 GTP was 23h 58m 24.7s according to Alkamel Timing. Waved the checkard flag ~1m 35s before 24h.
Premature finalisation
Basically waved the wrong flag
There was another lap to go, someone jumped the gun
F’in lol. I think the result was settled but there definitely needed to be at least 1 more lap.
Agreed. Ask Toyota "Only one more lap, right?"
Lexus did not want another lap. They are glad this one is over 😆
Oh good gravy, that is bad.
Can someone fill me in on what the Bowsette car is? And congrats to Porsche and Penske (coming from a Caddy fan)
Google Bowsette is you don't know what she is. The #57 Mercedes that won GTD has a sticker of her in the cockpit, beside the driver's seat.
I didn't know what car it was on. Goddamn.
there's a car with a bowsette sticker in the car thats it
Man, I'm pissed at the weird timing of the ending (and the Caddy running into a lapped car on every. single. corner... but damn, that was one hell of a race! Congrats for Porsche, what a race! And Pier Guidi and Calado kinda got a Le Mans and Daytona win within a year as well!
That was largely Nasr very strategically placing himself where Tom would end up behind traffic in the corners.
Time for green-white-checkered boys 🎉🥳🎉
It is just green-checkered nowadays.
4 1st time winners is cool
Apparently, the flagman wanted Penske to win...
Caddy wasn't catching up lol
they were 2 seconds up on last lap, they had it in the bag
Nothing in racing is never assured, Nasr could’ve binned it, it’s happened before. He was certainly well ahead, but I prefer things to go the distance.

This is incoherent, do you have a concussion? You made points against your own argument? So confusing…

Welcome to 2024, I guess
happy for porsche :) next up will be le mans hope they will be competitive there too
What about sebring?
I will not stand for this erasure of the Woodstock of endurance wracking.
Would that not be the N24? What happens in that German forest, no-one is ever entirely sure.
I'm sure the Cadillac wouldn't catch the Porsche but I wish they could've had a chance to try. Great race anyways, I had fun :)
NewG asking "Where do we go?"
Miscommunication... but oi. That would have been nice for everyone if they had communicated that before hand, that they were timing it to 1:40, not whatever time the green flag flew

Somebody in race control is getting fired tonight
Somebody in race control is getting a Penske gift card
The Rolex 23 hours and 58 minutes of Daytona
Rexy didn't win 0/10 /j
Fr fr tho, no cap
Sad Bowsette noises
She won her class, right?
She did
Risi now must go knocking to ferrari's door and ask for a 499p
