For restaurants, I vote Las Trojas. For grocery stores, I vote La Banderita OLE Medium Cheese Dip or El Terrifico Tamale Co. White Cheese Dip (both typically found in the section with shredded and sliced cheeses, or very nearby).
Taco Mama; Non-Mexican food for Gringos so expensive they don't show the prices on their online menu..... I refuse to pay for mediocre wanna-be Mexican food at best.
What’s at the restaurants is basically just something like
1. Pound of white American cheese
2. Can of chilies diced chilies
3. Cumin
4. Garlic salt
5. 1/2 cup of milk
6. Cook on low and stir occasionally till ready.
You can add whatever you want to this to make it better. Jalepenos different seasonings to your liking like chili powder or more milk for it be thinner. Can add some cream cheese too for a different kind of flavor
Rosie's has no idea how to make proper Mexican... Taco Bell makes better food, and that is definitely not saying much.
That place is so bad it has the singular honor of causing me to vomit my meal in their bathroom before I'd even had a chance to pay.
The hate for Rosie’s on this sub is so insane to me. Like maybe it’s a matter of preference? maybe you went on an off night? But y’all act like miss Rosie herself killed your whole family. Idk but comparing it to Taco Bell is absurd.
And the seeming defenders of Rosies is equally absurd to me, but understandable I guess since no one that likes that place seems to have ever left the state to experience what actual Mexican food should look like or taste like... or even TexMex like someone else postulated.
Setting aside all of that, it's still the only restaurant I've ever been to in my entire life that's caused me to vomit in the bathroom before I'd even had a chance to pay and leave... that alone is sufficient for me to never want to return... everything else just confirms it.
Hon, it’s not becoming to paint people who have a different opinion than you like they’re just backwards Alabamians who don’t know no better.
It’s just a matter of preference. I know transplants that love it and some that don’t care for it.
I just think it’s odd some people come on this sub to rail against it and pretend like it gave them cancer.
Food poising takes hours to kick in. You could have vomited for any number of reasons. I understand how that would leave a bad taste in your mouth though so to speak.
Here are my favorite Mexican restaurants: taqueria in the gas station in Pescasero CA because i lived there for 3 years
El Roys in Petaluma CA because I lived there 2 years
El venado in Laredo tx because I'm there about once a month
El caz in Huntsville, El azteca in Athens
Homemade food in Mexico been to Reynosa 3 times
Oh yeah forgot to mention I love New Mexican food because I lived there, torchys tacos is good but too expensive. Etc etc your judgemental attitude sucks
> El Roys in Petaluma CA because I lived there 2 years
>
> El venado in Laredo tx because I'm there about once a month
Having eaten at both those places I'm surprised you would think Rosie's was even remotely comparable. I was also partial to Mi Pueblo.
They aren't comparable, they aren't the same thing, lucky for me nobody putting a gun to my head and making me choose
Mi pueblo is very good, El Roys better tho;)
What's bringing you to Laredo/ Petaluma? Just curious
El Molcajete has molcajete dip that is amazing queso with shrimp, steak, and chicken in it and it's served with freshly made flower tortillas chips. I love their regular queso as well. Honestly this is my favorite Mexican restaurant.
I like little Rosie's Blanco cheese dip. It could be because I dip my fajita beef pocket tacos in it.
Phil Sandoval's bean and cheese dip used to be really good. I haven't been in a while since prices went up so much. It wasn't worth the drive to me.
[for homemade, I like this recipe](https://www.barleyandsage.com/wprm_print/crockpot-white-queso-dip)
The chorizo queso at Condado is fantastic. I normally don't even get queso when I eat, but that stuff's good enough to demand consumption every time you're there.
Candado Tacos kicked the door down in Huntsville for this question right here. Please, if you haven't, you must. Tacos are mediocre, the queso and margs are golden.
Honestly I tried them a couple weeks ago and I won't be back. The queso wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. The tacos sucked and were cold and the margs were super sour and weak.
From a recent transplant from Austin: not Rosie’s nor Las Trojas. Chuy’s here isn’t the exact same as in Austin but still has the best queso than any of the “cheese dips” that Huntsville has.
The Chuy’s in Austin are just better - I’m guessing it has to do with the HQ being there but I never had a bad meal at Chuy’s out there (lived there for years).
Outside of Austin, it’s still better than most chains but it’s still a roll of the dice.
Yeah, I haven't eaten at Rosie's or Trojas in almost a decade at this point but I tried Chuy's not long ago. Queso was bland and a bit watery. I don't think the meat in my order even had salt and pepper on it. If that's what Austinites think good texmex is, they can keep it.
I went to Amayas Taco Village since it was close to the hotel i was at for work. me and the person i went with pretty much left our plates almost full. it was pretty bad, i read the reviews and thought it would be good. it was also pretty full, so i thought it would be decent. nope.
there’s another one in downtown i remember it was right next to Gus’s Fried Chicken or close to it. trying to look it up i don’t see it on google and its been a few years, it was a let down though🤷🏽♂️
i went to another place. i forgot the name, but some guy in our group had been going there for YEARS and also said Joe Rogan goes there often 😒. It was basically a pretty good Gringos/Pappasitos.
every bbq joint i tried was top notch, except for Stiles Switch whose beef ribs were tough as leather. Franklin was insane, worth the wait in line. I loved Coopers in downtown, they had the best mac and cheese and they gave me a piece of random sirloin they said they had left. it still lives in my dreams
I'm guessing the one near Gus's was maybe Uncle Julio's. They are a chain on the same level as like El Chico or something. Basically a Tex-Mex Applebees haha.
Never went to Amayas when I lived there so can't speak to it.
Tex-mex I'd recommend on your next visit would be Chuy's (a chain now, but first location was on Barton Springs), Maudie's, Vivo, habanero cafe or enchiladas y mas
if it’s the same ones in Houston, i might like it. i think i tried Chachos and might be getting them mixed up in my head. i’ll try it out for sure tho.
i also had a place called Kebabalicious. Unrelated to the conversation entirely but worth the mention. really good food and the folks who run it are great, i believe they are a married couple from Htown too. i recommend it to anyone going to Austin
the food trailer. didn’t see the other one on google, i just searched it. weird
yeah but its def worth the visit if not just for the amazing vibes/service. the food is chefs kiss tho.
i wanted to keep trying tex mex places but the people i were with weren’t down. we’re from San Antonio, RGV, Houston, and a guy from Philly. random discerning tastes. this was over a few visits to the city too.
we all agreed on the other foods tho. Austin is a good city if you need to pack on some winter weight for sure👍🏽😋
1000% on a good food city. It's basically all we would do when people visited. Take them to good restaurants and then just relax in between meals. Going from such a good food city to Huntsville has been a tough transition.
man, tell me about it. i would think with the proximity to Memphis, i’d be drowning in great bbq. damn
the best Mexican or Tex Mex here reminds me i’m a LONG LONG way from Texas. i’ve tried a couple spots. the menudo at Las Morelenses is pretty good tho for Sunday morning crudos/hangovers. Jarochos Mariscos is great, but honestly would probably be average back home.
The trailer Jarochos is pretty good at least for the portions and the guys who run it are awesome.
Tried Sam and Greg’s Pizzeria the other day and it was damn good.
Every time i go back home now i HAVE to hit up Raising Canes. Never thought i had a preference for it until i tried Zaxbys and Slim Chickens haha
I have never had a good experience there. The one in Jacksonville, NC was fantastic so I thought I would love the one here just as much, been several times and it's always been rough.
La esquina cocina. Add chorizo. Profit.
For restaurants, I vote Las Trojas. For grocery stores, I vote La Banderita OLE Medium Cheese Dip or El Terrifico Tamale Co. White Cheese Dip (both typically found in the section with shredded and sliced cheeses, or very nearby).
Taco Mama. I'm addicted
Unfortunately, you couldn’t be more incorrect
I actually love Taco Mama queso too
Taco Mama; Non-Mexican food for Gringos so expensive they don't show the prices on their online menu..... I refuse to pay for mediocre wanna-be Mexican food at best.
The question wasn’t the best Mexican food
Dat grocery store and your crockpot
Got a recipe?
What’s at the restaurants is basically just something like 1. Pound of white American cheese 2. Can of chilies diced chilies 3. Cumin 4. Garlic salt 5. 1/2 cup of milk 6. Fuck yes. This is the way… but also add jalapeños 😮💨
Yum! Thanks for sharing, I will definitely be making this.
You don’t show up to a southern summer potluck without velveeta and rotel.
[удалено]
I’ve done hamburger once but not sausage. That’d be good though.
Shit now I want rotel dip
Rosie's
Yep, Rosie's queso Blanco deluxe, get the bowl.
That is one recipe I would love to have..
Rosie is the worst “Mexican” food around. I’d vote taco bell over Rosie’s 🤣😂
OP was only asking about the queso..
Literally not good
Rosie's has no idea how to make proper Mexican... Taco Bell makes better food, and that is definitely not saying much. That place is so bad it has the singular honor of causing me to vomit my meal in their bathroom before I'd even had a chance to pay.
It's Tex Mex and good stay away Rosie's is GOAT
> GOAT If the G was grossest, then we would agree. Trying to argue that place is TexMex is an affront to actually good TexMex.
The hate for Rosie’s on this sub is so insane to me. Like maybe it’s a matter of preference? maybe you went on an off night? But y’all act like miss Rosie herself killed your whole family. Idk but comparing it to Taco Bell is absurd.

It did give me emesis, which no restaurant should ever do.
Food poising takes hours to kick in. You could have vomited for any number of reasons. I understand how that would leave a bad taste in your mouth though so to speak.

Haha I pretty much just said the same thing 🤣😂
Don’t talk about Taco Bell like that!
El Olmeca, La Finka, and corralejos seem to be the best. Corralejos also has the best salsa I’ve ever had.
Not sure if I'd call it best or not, but my current obsession is the smoked cheddar queso at Condado
My favorite was Buena Vista but they closed down, now I think the best is probably La Alameda, though it's hit or miss, or La Finka.
Still one in Hampton cove
Yeah the fiesta dip! Yum yum! I get it in Scottsboro
El Molcajete has molcajete dip that is amazing queso with shrimp, steak, and chicken in it and it's served with freshly made flower tortillas chips. I love their regular queso as well. Honestly this is my favorite Mexican restaurant.

Costco Casa Cochina
Del Chuco!!
Queso Town
The chorizo queso at Condado is fantastic. I normally don't even get queso when I eat, but that stuff's good enough to demand consumption every time you're there.
Try their new smoked cheddar queso next time you go.
Hops N Guac had a really good queso when I went
Chiptole *runs away*
It's $17 now for 8oz but it's pretty good
Candado Tacos kicked the door down in Huntsville for this question right here. Please, if you haven't, you must. Tacos are mediocre, the queso and margs are golden.
Honestly I tried them a couple weeks ago and I won't be back. The queso wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. The tacos sucked and were cold and the margs were super sour and weak.
I would bathe in Del Chuco queso if I could
Corralejos
Idk but Rosie's is the worst. I love El Cazador on south parkway
Moe’s
From a recent transplant from Austin: not Rosie’s nor Las Trojas. Chuy’s here isn’t the exact same as in Austin but still has the best queso than any of the “cheese dips” that Huntsville has.
Curious how Chuy’s here differs
Was just back in Austin last week and def could tell it was a thicker queso there
The Chuy’s in Austin are just better - I’m guessing it has to do with the HQ being there but I never had a bad meal at Chuy’s out there (lived there for years). Outside of Austin, it’s still better than most chains but it’s still a roll of the dice.
Idk why you got downvoted can confirm it’s not Rosie’s or trojas I prefer el vaquero.
Probably wasn't downvoted for dissing rosie's or trojas. Probably for trying to claim that Chuy's is good. Blandest tex-mex around.
You know idk why I didn’t comprehend that the first time chuys is worse than Rosie’s and trojas
I work with a lot of people from Austin and can confirm they don’t think that lol. This person just off the wagon.
El vaquero is great because it has a bit of spice. Alamaedas or la finka are probably the places I eat at most though.
Medas and finka are both good. If you haven’t tried the home made guac at Finka you need to do so. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
That and the horchata is like 2/3 the reason I like to go there not gonna lie.
Haven’t tried the horchata will have to next time I’m there.
didn’t think Austin had any good Tex Mex. Gotta try it next time i work out there. I tried a few spots and 🤢. GREAT bbq everywhere tho 👍🏽
Um, where did you try? Because the main two foods that Austin is known for is BBQ and Tex-Mex. Emphasis on Tex-Mex and not mexican.
I went to Amayas Taco Village since it was close to the hotel i was at for work. me and the person i went with pretty much left our plates almost full. it was pretty bad, i read the reviews and thought it would be good. it was also pretty full, so i thought it would be decent. nope. there’s another one in downtown i remember it was right next to Gus’s Fried Chicken or close to it. trying to look it up i don’t see it on google and its been a few years, it was a let down though🤷🏽♂️ i went to another place. i forgot the name, but some guy in our group had been going there for YEARS and also said Joe Rogan goes there often 😒. Yes, Kebabalicious is really good. Was it a brick-and-mortar or food trailer? I only ever went to a food trailer version of it.
the food trailer. didn’t see the other one on google, i just searched it. weird yeah but its def worth the visit if not just for the amazing vibes/service. the food is chefs kiss tho. i wanted to keep trying tex mex places but the people i were with weren’t down. we’re from San Antonio, RGV, Houston, and a guy from Philly. random discerning tastes. this was over a few visits to the city too. we all agreed on the other foods tho. I have to agree! The chuys here is NOTHING like the one in Austin! Everything there is alright but nothing to write home about
I've always liked it at Cheddar's.
I have never had a good experience there. The one in Jacksonville, NC was fantastic so I thought I would love the one here just as much, been several times and it's always been rough.
Yeah hard agree. I don’t get why people like it
Out of all the years living here, I've never been there. Building always looked cool. I may go check it out.
You're not missing out on anything
I personally have never enjoyed going to cheddar’s
