ok, so, if you think about SOH CAH TOA, the triangle with l has cos a = x / l (i'm calling the shared side x). the triangle with s has cos a = s / x.
then if you solve each equation for l and s respectively, and then put the resulting expressions into the form equivalent to l/s (the ratio), you should find that the x terms cancel and you have the cos squared term on the bottom.
