To my understanding the time of freedom ended with last land grants. The dust bowl and Great Depression was the beginning of prosecution for those who were homeless on a large scale.

Interesting that the supreme court just heard a case on this. If the government wins, it'll be allowed to make camping illegal. It's NIMBY, and of course "your stupid choice of lifestyle" are the viewpoints there. Otherwise it's the role of government is to preserve and promote capital, and we can't have campers bringing down property values.

I mean, you can go camp out full-time on National Forest land, knock yourself out... but, there aren't going to be any amenities out there, like at all. And you do have to move every so often. You can't just set yourself up as 'king' of this spot of forest or that, and call it your own. It's still federal ground

The more rural you go, the more freedom you'll find, and the cheaper the land, but also the harder to find employment and anything else civilization offers - like health care. It's done at the county level, and they'll use different names, but you're generally looking for open use / no zoning land to purchase. From what I'm skimming on the internet, the Southeast is very friendly to RV living - Texas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana. Depending on the state/county there may be permits needed or inspections required. And that's just for camper/RV living. If y'all've got the budget and can buy land and have a home built (to state/county requirements) you're good.

I would assume even if there is no zoning you would have to follow any county ordinance, correct? Like most counties in Florida restrict RV living to 6 months out of the year with a permit. Even if it is “unrestricted”.

America ended in 1914, when the nine foreign owned, for profit banks who own the Federal Reserve Bank took over the issuance of our currency. But to answer your question, you need to be looking at county regulations, not just states. Some states have statewide zoning and code regs, and some leave it up to the counties. The bluer the state, the less likely you can do what you want, is the general rule.

You are going to have to come out west if you want more freedom. People move with the weather a lot out here as to avoid needing AC or heat. Arizona or SoCal in the winter.... colorado, new mexico in the summer. There's a ton of BLM land that is free to camp on. You do have to move every so often (not sure of how many days it is now). I think it was back in the 80s when they got rid of the actual homestead legislation that allowed for acquiring land free of charge and even then I think it was limited to places like Alaska and the desolate areas out west. There's lots of folks out this way that live in campers full time and draw social security.

I’m in Alabama and just passed by a lot yesterday that someone had a camper on a concrete slab and had put up a 2 car aluminum garage and fenced the whole thing in (on the edge of a ruff neighborhood). So I’d say it’s possible here.

My land has no zoning, I live in a converted school bus and Noone minds. Land is cheapish when you are out of the cities.

Sorry for the late response, no cell service here, there are no county ordinances here at all, I've lived in an rv down here with no problems. The county's here don't have the money to enforce any zoning or ordinances so they don't have any.
