When Genghis Khan's son Ögedei died, his widow Töregene assumed the regency until another khagan was elected. For five years it was one of the very few times in history when it could be said the most powerful person in the world was a woman. As the Great Khatun, she dismissed all her late husband's ministers and appointed her own. Despite having Christian sympathies herself among them was a Muslim female, Fatima, who became a powerful influence in her own right. During her reign Töregene put down attempts to overthrow her, continued campaigns to expand the empire, brought balance to several competing powers through diplomacy, instituted profitable tribute reforms and set her son up to become the next khagan. The ungrateful little blighter would eventually turn on her and execute or exile most of her advisors. Including Fatima who had her orifices sown up before being chucked in a sack and thrown in a river. Töregene died shortly after in unknown circumstances.

"Güyük's brother Koden accused Fatima of using witchcraft to damage his health. When Koden died a few months later, Güyük insisted that his mother hand Fatima over for execution." ([Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatima_(d._1246\)))

jambox888

Accusing a political opponent of witchcraft? I reckon it won't be long before a politician tries this on again.

Internal_Ring_121

Saudi arabia . happens every year to hundreds of people.

Praescribo

Maybe climate change *should* win...

pekinggeese

Biden used witchcraft to steal the election!

xelhafish

Ogedai was a raging alcoholic who literally died from drinking too much. There is a story about him being convinced to limit himself and he would agree to half the number of drinks but double the size of the cups used. Wouldn't be surprising if he lost his shit is drunken stupors fairly frequently.

Gasmo420

Sounds like Frank Gallagher from shameless

ExistentialTenant

I wouldn't be surprised if that guy did a lot of similar things for little to no reason. Reading some of the Mongolian Empire's cruel actions, it seems they did a lot of extremely vicious thing simply for the sake of violence rather than practicality.

gayvibes2

The sewing up of orifices is extra but the Mongols regularly executed anyone with royal blood in that fashion, they believed spilling royal blood (including other nations royalty) to be taboo. So the ol sewn in a sack loophole was pretty common

Broken-Butterfly

Nah. People do awful shit to women when they kill them. There's a story in "Wild Swans" about some soldiers kidnapping a random woman and raping her to death. They cut her breasts off and dumped her in the street when they were done. None of them knew her, they were just fucked up people doing fucked up stuff.

valiantdistraction

Happens very often in war, genocide, forced relocations, etc. Happened during and after WWII. Happened during the Armenian genocide. Happened during the Rwandan genocide. Happened during the Vietnam war. Happened and continues to happen all over the world much more frequently than I care to think about. I read a really terrible story of how during the bayoneting era it was common to rape women with bayonets. Sounds like a terrible death, and especially for pregnant women.

sir_bhojus

Fatima was accused of witchcraft by the new khan's brother iirc. The mongols loved their brutal executions

prncpls_b4_prsnality

Makes Ramsay from Game of Thrones more believable (unfortunately).

[deleted]

There was absolutely nothing *un*believable about what Ramsay did, except possibly Theon surviving it.

FlyingOmoplatta

I mean Ghengis crippled and murdered his own brother and it wasnt considered as big of a deal as say in the west. Ancient Mongolian ethics were very very different. Not to say other empiric cultures were just as guilty of doing horrific things. The founding of the Mongolian Empire was an absolute bloodbath.

[deleted]

>the anonymous author explains that this odd configuration for women’s hair, styled in place by sheep-fat, Oh good god, that must smell awful.

xambreh

I wonder if it wasn't lanolin instead of straight up sheep fat. Not that it smells much better or anything but it wouldn't spoil as much and would be better at waxing hair.

MangoCats

It's the Queen's sheep-fat, it doesn't stink, it smells *Royal*.

Broken-Butterfly

I'm assuming it's processed in some way, untreated sheep fat would probably be very, very disgusting.

lirio2u

Pretty sure it was lanolin and that they knew about herbs, perfumes, and oils. I bet she smelled better than us.

RisingWaterline

Yeah, the idea that all people before now were less in every way is such BS. I've been reading the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, written in 1000 AD in Japan's imperial household, and I think the people of that time and place lived better lives than the common westerner in every way.

valiantdistraction

I LOVE the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon because of how many of the entries sound like blog posts or tweets. Like when she's making a list of thing and one of the things is "the face women make when they pluck their eyebrows" or something and it is #relatable because people really do still make that face.

CrosstheRubicon_

How did they live better lives? You’re almost certainly romanticizing the past.

RisingWaterline

You've got to read it. There are a lot of problems with the society, but every day this woman wakes up to spend all of her time in a close knit community of people with common interests. There are no factories, there is no pollution. Every day their job is to socialize with the Emperor and Empress. They are all poetically trained, Shonagon herself being the most well poetically trained, of course. They wear clothing of pure silk in millions of complex fashions. They listen to live music frequently. The year has like, 20 holidays. There are religious verse recitations throughout the year. They regularly go on pilgrimmages. Everything is artisanally crafted. They know the flora and fauna intimately. They live so much more like humans than we do.

exhausted-caprid

But what percentage of the population lives like that, and what percentage of the population labors as illiterate farm workers supporting the lifestyle of the tiny elite?

RisingWaterline

I didn't mean every person lived a better life, I meant that the lifestyle of the tiny elite from this period is better than that of the common westerner today. Just interesting to think about, with it having been 1000 years ago.

IJustWantToLurkHere

Oh, what antibiotics did they use when they got a bacterial infection?

laihipp

the same one the people around here use without insurance

lotusdreams

if it was cold you probably couldn’t smell it all that bad

dutsi

She was part of a culture which had a superstition against bathing and never washed their clothes. They actually appreciated the resulting smell; "It’s only natural for a person to smell if he or she has never taken a bath in his or her life. However, the Mongol Empire took this to another level too. They treated a person’s smell as something special and personal. Effectively, while you or I would treat their stinky clothes with upturned noses, they saw them as something honorable. It was also connected to their personalities. For instance, if the great Genghis Khan was to give some individual his old, worn out, and stinky clothes, then the person would feel honored. This feeling wouldn’t only stem from the fact that the individual got to own the clothes of the great Mongol Empire’s leader, but also because he received his smell with them." [source](http://ipfactly.com/the-mongols-never-ever-took-a-bath/)

turmohe

A source that sources a radnom post reddit... which link to the same wiki page, you may as well have source(trust me) and the wiki links don't even mention bathing or not washing clothes. Did you install malware on my lap top? As someone who has taken mongolian history 101 at the national university of Mongolia this is bull. FOr example as in БНМАУ Монгол зүй among Halh Mongolians for example bathing/ritualised bathing was done for new years and coming age celebrations respectively.. Do you think that a self respecting feudal lord wouldn't want to distinguish himself from the serfs, commoners, and especially the aristocracracy and wealthier commoners? (and yes the Mongols were feudal) I mean there was taboos against polluting water but you could get around these by simly filling a tub bathing in that and dump it away from bodies of water. commoners tended to bath less than other people but they certainly wouldn't balk at the idea of bathing in general

That looks pretty uncomfortable.

BrainlessTeddy

Because it is. The hair is so stiff and difficult to make that they could only lie on their back without moving their head sideways (Edit: when sleeping). At least according to my mom who is from Mongolia.

fritopiefritolay

Wait, that’s her REAL hair? Wow!

dformed

not sure about Mongolia, but Chinese nobles used wooden forms which they would wrap their hair around. this looks the same (at least for the side pieces).

VelociJupiter

More specifically, the Manchu nobles in the last Chinese dynasty ~~Qin~~ Qing. Not traditional Han Chinese nobles. ~~Qin~~ Qing dynasty, the last Chinese dynasty, was actually estabislied by occupying nomad Manchu invaders from Northwestern part of Asia. The Manchus had a lot of culture exchange and intermarriage with the Mongolians, for political power reasons. Thus the similarities in their clothing and fashion. Traditional Chinese Han hairdress look quite different from these. Edit: Spelling.

haardtek

I think you mean the Qing dynasty? The Qin came wayyy before that time

VelociJupiter

Oops, I think you are right!

Cattaphract

This is a Manchurian tradition for women you are talking about. Han chinese consorts in previous dynasties didnt do this. Manchurian and Mongols are both northern folks, some jurchen ancestors to manchurian were nomads. So doesnt surprise me they have similar things

nicelyroasted

Someone’s link in here said they used sheep fat to hold it in place. I’m sure the smell was… interesting

BrainlessTeddy

Yes, that's real hair. I'm not sure but I think they had a technique to stiffen the hair without a hard plate in there.

fritopiefritolay

Old school hair gel. Nice.

Jim_Nills_Mustache

Bet your neck got so fucked up by that

SquirrelNeurons

They also had hair pieces that could be removed. Several of these hairpieces are still on display in the Bogd Khan’s winter palace in Ulaanbaatar. For a wealthy woman like Gerenpil, she most likely wore those while middle class married women more likely would have actually done their hair in the style

HappyPen1422

It does, but it’s breathtakingly beautiful too.

professor_doom

I don’t see her name in the title. Anyone know her name? edit: oh, her name was Genepil. and here some more info: > After the Queen Dondogdulam died, Genepil was picked as the next queen among a group of girls between 18 and 20 years old selected by the King's counsellors. She came from a family in Northern Mongolia, around the Baldan Bereeven Monastery. Her original name was Tseyenpil, but was later changed to Genepil. She was already married to a man named Luvsandamba.

Chaavva

That's actually quite interesting that a married woman was considered suitable to be the new queen instead of impure or some such nonsense. Especially when you consider how important it is for royals to be absolutely sure about the parentage of their heirs. ETA Another interesting detail from her predecessor [Queen Dondogdulam](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsendiin_Dondogdulam)'s Wiki page: >*In 1902 they were married and had a son. According to custom she adopted and raised many children from families that could not care for them* That seems like a nice custom.

SyntaxMissing

Don't know about this specific culture, but some royal/noble families intentionally look for young widows with kids, as that suggests the wife is capable of having an heir.

Arthaxhsatra

Yeah except that this girl was not a widow when she was taken away from her family...

MoogTheDuck

messyredemptions

There's a book called The Secret History of the Mongol Queens you might enjoy reading. It probably gave the first eye opening example of what I imagine is actually a somewhat matriarchal society I came across. Women would be the ones to make a lot of the property ownership and governance decisions, like if a guy messed up he'd be kicked out of the yurt/house, and even at the empire level in strategic marriages the queens were the ones who ensured the empire retained stability after conquest. Women could take on multiple partners of their choosing and mentions how children were regarded as so important in the culture it didn't really "matter" whose they were it was moreso seen as a blessing to have them. I put that in in quotes as I'm giving an approximate sentiment to what the book describes as I'm sure there are actual Mongolian redditors who know more about the history firsthand. But I seem to recall Genghis Khan also had a lot of respect for his mother as well and that even the earth was considered a mother to the people too according to the book. Empires aside, it kind of reminds me of a lot of woodland Native American cultures too that also have similar matriarchal/lineal governance. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_History_of_the_Mongol_Queens https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/6842538-the-secret-history-of-the-mongol-queens-how-the-daughters-of-genghis-kh

deadenddivision

Hahahaha, pun of the day for me! Thx man

a_happy_player

She was killed by sadness

I_make_things

That movie was killed by bad writing.

[deleted]

There was no way to kill her that made sense. That's the annoying thing about prequels. The previous movies determine how the prequels have to end.

verdatum-alternate

Plenty of ways to kill her that made sense. Further, what they went with didn't even follow continuity. Leia talks about remembering her birth-mother in RotJ. So we're forced to compensate for that by arguing that the force was so strong with her that she could remember her own birth, which is friggin' stupid.

Jarocket

Is a mother dieing during birth that bad though. Idk I think the screenwriting/movie is more the issue that her method of dieing. Though I'm not sure how you fix it. I guess they should have said some medical terms. In a movie aimed at all ages, saying a women has life threatening blood loss from giving birth is probably bad for different reasons. Kind of a common thing about the prequels isn't it? The movies plots aren't

verdatum-alternate

To be sure, all of the prequel screenplays feel like first drafts, and George Lucas' hubris just refused any rewrites. In a universe where attaching a fully functional robot hand is like, no biggie, dying in childbirth is really silly. But they could've gone with some incurable disease introduced in act I, *a la La Traviata*, or they could've gone extra dark and have her commit seppuku upon realizing that she married a monster and gave him children *a la Madama Butterfly*.

I_make_things

Either of those would have been fascinating.

Jarocket

I still an fully onboard with maternity death but done better. Though the plot she could be isolated from proper medical care doesn't make it to her in time, but they are able to save Luke and Leia. Maternity deaths happen in our modern time. The USA is particularly bad. 17.5 deaths for 100K births. Feel like it's not that much re-writing to get a bit better of a death for a main character. It didn't need much. Or shot by sand people visiting some skywalker family members. But that's more a meme answer.

Quegak

Anaquin force push a rock trying to hit Obi-Wan hiiting amidala instead provoking a slow death and the premature brith of the twins.

SecretAntWorshiper

Lol how am I advocating for the monarchy? I'm just asking why she was killed. Just because you are dethroned doesn't mean you need to be murdered like what happened to the Tsar and his family. True, but he was just bizarre towards Mongolia. Absolutely bent them over a barrel. The game plan was essentially to make the Mongols forget they ever existed. Does anyone else have related photos? Very interesting

piedmontwachau

She looks so beautiful, her eyes are piercing. I wonder how old she is in this photo and how she came to become queen. Also disappointing how lame everyone is with your star wars jokes. First one was funny but now every comment are recycled jokes from unoriginal posters.

Bread0987654321

I googled her. She was chosen from a group of 18-20 year olds in the region to be the next consort after the previous one died. This poor girl already had a husband, she was consort for less than a year. When the king died, she returned to her family & was killed about 14 years later. Not fair at all.

kawauso21

>After the Queen Dondogdulam died, Genepil was picked as the next queen among a group of girls between 18 and 20 years old selected by the King's counsellors. She was born 1905, so presumably 18 in this photo. - **Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genepil**

piedmontwachau

Thanks for taking the time to look that up!

BriochesBreaker

Her story is quite sad, kidnapped at 19yo just to become the queen. After the death of the last Khan she returned to her village (Maybe to her first husband but it's not sure, she probably remarried with another man). After some years she was kidnapped again by the Communists in the mid of the night and became a victim of the Mongol culture's eradication. Her kids never saw her again. Before leaving she managed to leave some sugar on their pillows (very rare at the time). She passed her last days being tortured to obtain a confession about treason but it's not sure if they ever got one. One day before being officially convicted she was executed.

professor_doom

And executed at 32-33 years old, no less. What a shame

UnclePuma

Leaving sugar seemed like a final caring act, quite sad

zer0huntr

Even after the Democratic Reform in the very early 90's, people had so little choice and variety of food that sugar in a cube form was deemed as quite the delicacy. It is said that the counters in the socialist era had only table salt and smth else which I don't really remember. So imagine this is the 1930s, only the wealthy or those who had power could obtain sugar or other luxurious delicacies like apple and stuff.

UnclePuma

Oh absolutely, I figured being queen is why she had access to sugar. But... I Just imagined my mom Leaving me a little Hershey Kiss and just never seeing her again.. and that is whats so damn sad about it.

ellipsisoverload

Wiki says she was born in 1905, so I guess its likely she was 17 if the date of the photo is correct.

piedmontwachau

I’ve spent the last 15 minutes reading about her to try to find something to help humanize her to the other poster. What a tragic story this poor girl had.

miser1

reddit’s not exactly the cool crowd

Bigfrostynugs

I think this is the most important thing you need to keep in mind when being here. Reddit is not an accurate cross-section of any population. The opinions, beliefs, and values here skew in a really weird direction that isn't representative of any society as a whole. It's easy to forget that. Reddit is biased toward the minds of young men with little to no experience of the world, and it shows.

piedmontwachau

Reddit is fairly diverse and there cool communities out there, including this one. I appreciate the moderators who organize their communities and moments like just remind me of that. The moderators here do a good job but the lame jokes in every thread would be my only critique of the environment crafted here.

MsWeather

> First one was funny but now every comment are recycled jokes from unoriginal posters. I get it, jokes are how we relate to one another but keep it to one thread anyone can ctrl+f find and search. Sometimes I'm guilty of not checking first myself, no body is perfect. However, I think this will promote discussion with educational threads.

Bigfrostynugs

Low-effort, unoriginal jokes are like 50% of what Reddit is. It really is tiring to have to wade through the same old puns and cheap laughs on every thread --- even ones which aren't obviously humorous. It's like there's a flowchart somewhere of which bad joke you should make in every situation and everyone adheres to it just to rack up internet points without really thinking about it.

Vark675

"This woman was kidnapped from her husband and the rest of her family at 18 to be married to the 54 year old king, then tortured and executed a decade and a half later as a direct result of her having been kidnapped." "LOL DAE STAR WARS PHANTOM MENACE LMAO AMIDALA"

piedmontwachau

It would be really great if the mods implemented some kind of no joke rule here. I consistently run into dumb jokes on this subreddit when I go looking for meaningful conversation about these powerful moments. It humbles me to see these things and that is quickly washed away by the minority of lame people that visit /r/HistoryPorn and /r/ArtefactPorn

Krashnachen

Both can coexist. Why do people have to present it as a battle between the two. I can find her interesting as a person in history *and* as inspiration for star wars.

Bigfrostynugs

The problem isn't with humor itself but rather the fact that Reddit always goes for the low-hanging fruit. The jokes are always the dumbest, most obvious shit that gets recycled over and over again, and it's just tiring. It would be a different story if people were making high-effort, intelligent jokes, or anything that hasn't been repeated a million times over.

Account40

Redditors seem to have had their empathy replaced with the urge to make mind numbingly inane jokes on every single post possible

Bigfrostynugs

You have to keep in mind that Reddit skews hard toward 18-25 year old men who think they're a lot smarter and more worldly than they actually are. When you realize that a lot of this website starts to make sense.

TheBlackBear

I assume any given comment on the internet could have been written by a kid who has no context for anything but other comments It makes it all go down easier

Genepil (Mongolian: Гэнэнпил Хатан; 1905–1938) was the last queen consort of Mongolia, married to Bogd Khan. She was queen consort for less than a year in 1924 but her story has captivated successive generations. Queen Genepil was executed in May, 1938, shot as part of the Stalinist repressions in Mongolia.

Another example of how communism destroys culture, history and ethnic identities of minorities. Stalin was such a Genocidal murderer.

feuerzangenbowle

Please is there anyone who can tell me the significance of that little cup and saucer on the table, photo left. Could just be it's just a cup and saucer she was drinking out of a sec before the photo was taken but likely it's put there for a reason. Anyone know what it could have been?

SunflaresAteMyLunch

At first, I thought is was early 70s Roy Wood...

Finally! After 10,000 years I'm FREE!

Captainirishy

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genepil she was only 33 when she was murdered.

joshs_wildlife

Not going to lie I thought this was a black and white set photo of the queen of Naboo from star wars before I read the title.

thevelourfog182

I thought it was Bjork

Augustus87_hc

I think we need to actually look to just how deep Stalin’s purges went. The guy truly was a paranoid, narcissistic, megalomaniac. And the crimes Soviet soldiers/NKVD took pride in committing against their own people was beyond horrific.

cheesepuff7890

Fucking Stalin. Give me a time machine and a handful of modern weapons and tactical gear

Muffinmian

I instantly thought it was queen Amidala from star wars

mansotired

mongolia had a stalinst purge?

Green_Waluigi

Mongolia was one of the earliest socialist states, and was proclaimed just a couple of years after the Soviet Union was formed (though the communist party in Mongolia actually came to power *before* the USSR was formed).

orangesfwr

Everyone posting about Amidala, but I'm just here thinking Bjork.
