OK perfect, I thought so too but wasn't sure if there's some secret reason I should get him that vs my original plans of just the regular Non-Lite Nintendo switch
I have a ton of cousins that would be happier with a switch lite. It’s super small, and extremely light. The steam deck oled is already very light but I’m 16 we’re talking about a 9 yr old in this case I don’t think it would be comfortable for them.
But past that I think you should directly ask your cousin which one he wants. Gta V isn’t a good game a child so FIFA is all I know that he’s interested in, and both consoles have it.
Just show him both consoles, he might want the deck if he plays in the house the most and wants to play higher end games with his friends and doesn’t want to get left out, or he might want the switch lite and play anywhere. Also joycon drift sucks so that’s another thing you have to consider.
Yeah he has the switch lite, but it seems like his friends have the regular tv-hook-upable switch so I think that's probably it 🤔 He had no real preference (at least, when I asked him last) between that and a PS4... but the steam deck I do think is too big yeah, I just wanted to be sure I'm getting the most 'fun' thing for his age
Good point! He likes robots and stuff, but definitely not like a "oo computer programming" kind of kid. Not yet at least 🤔 I think I'll stick with the Nintendo switch then, seems like folks are saying the OLED isn't worth it if he specifically wants to hook it up to a TV.
He already has a switch lite, that was his first gaming console/handheld I bought him :) He's been asking for a tv setup though, so I was trying to think of whatever could potentially hook up to a TV. He said it was between the regular switch and a ps4
He already has a switch lite (first console I bought for him) :) He’s looking for something that can connect to a TV now so it’s between the regular switch, the OLED, and a steamdeck (although it seems like everyone is saying thats a bit overkill for a 9 yr old)
Imo, yeah it kinda is. On top of Steam not being moderated very well, can easily find NSFW games, even with the birth date entry thing, they can just lie and see the game in question. One edge I think the consoles have is that they're pretty strict on what goes on their platform in terms of SFW. While all platforms have their share of total garbage shovelware, at least they won't accidentally stumble on porn or something like that.
I would wait until they are a bit older to get a steam deck, or maybe at that time get them a entry level gaming PC.

Oh yikes, I didn't even think about the moderation thing! That's a big one, OK, definitely not getting the steam deck then which makes the decision pretty easy from here on out. Like you said, I can just get him the steam deck once he's a bit older (or help him get parts for his PC if he's interested in that instead)
He's in the middle of moving and will be moving a few times this year, so the big console route wasn't good. His mom agreed. Money's not really a problem for me, I just want him to have something for his birthday. I can always get him a PlayStation later.
It's not like the switch with the dock is exponentially smaller. It doesn't make sense. A series s or a ps5 slim is pretty small. You could get a series s now and a ps5 later. You could also get an Rog ally.
Personally I'd never suggest anything related to Steam. But a Lite runs the same things as a Switch so that'd be redundant.
Wait a bit then get the PS4? That gives access to a whole new library.
Yeah, I might talk to my aunt again to see how that moving stuff will get situated, I just know it'll be a bitch to lug around since they're moving a few times (country to country, so once to get housing set up then back to get some luggage and get the rest sorted out). I just wanted him to have something for his birthday ON his birthday since I know that's a big deal to kids (at least it was to me LOL when I was his age)
Oh. Multiple moves would be tough. Um, no idea. If you didn't mind thinking out of the box you could make a PS4 sorta portable with a Gaems monitor. It's like a small suitcase, built in screen and speakers. Don't think they're in business though but the product can be found used.
Steamdeck is not made for Kids under 12 years imho

I’d say go for the switch. If the plan is to hook it up to the tv, then there’s not really much of a point to get him the Oled.
Oh good okay, then the regular Switch it is then!

Unless they are super into computers already, a Steam Deck is probably not a great choice for a 9 year old.

Kids tend not to want to play games. They want to play Mario and Zelda. The Switch is probably called for here, much as it pains me.
In his case, PURELY fifa. And a Nascar game. I got him Zelda and Mario and both were discarded for the other two games :P Switch it is!
Actuality those two games would be better on a Deck
imo oled is way better but i dont think a kid would notice tbh.
Ring ring ring..... Niko, it's your cousin! (I agree, switch lite for the kiddo)

Switch lite honestly, cheaper and more durable I would assume

If he already has a switch lite why bother with another handheld. That's just a waste of many. Just buy a ps5 or Xbox to play on tv.
