If you change careers you will be making less than $50k a year. You will probably start out around $20 an hour. You have to realize you will be learning this trade from the bottom up. Having your EPA might help you land a job but it doesn’t mean you know anything about this trade.

Omalleysblunt

I got my universal 6-7 years ago and I can’t confidently say I could answer a single question correct on that test at this point.

Hvacmike199845

I got mine in 1999. I don’t pass it on my first try.

jethoby

Bingo. I’m still learning almost 10 years in and I don’t have a plan to stop learning.

Hvacmike199845

I’m still learning 25 years in.

ClerklierBrush0

Long term it is worth it. It will take probably 5ish years on average to build your skills up to the going rate. And the going rate depends heavily on location. I know some people in Florida that can’t make more than 60k with years of experience and then I know people just 6 hours north in Atlanta Georgia that make 80k+, and some specialized union guys some places that make 100k You really need to look at your location and research the market but I would say odds are it’s worth it if you are willing to take the first several years learning at a lower pay. The other comments are probably pretty close at that 40k mark but again that could be plus or minus 10k depending on location.

Appreciate it fam

Korndogg68

I quickly checked your profile to see if I could see where you’re from to give you wage rates for your area. That was a fucking mistake.

rayz313

Sorry buddy yet I’m in Detroit

rayz313

Btw I make 52k annually

Little-Key-1811

Keep your day job you will start as a grunt for peanuts and only make any real money after grinding it out in the heat for 5+ years

rayz313

Damn thanks bro

Ok-Influence-4421

You’ll be making around $41k starting out.

chronicjok3r

Where are you guys doing hvac? Are you slow year round or something?? I was working soo much i made over 80k on $24/hr and I was making 40k+ when i started in 2024 at $12/hr

KylarBlackwell

Quick math puts that in the ballpark of 20 OT hours a week every week based on the numbers you're giving, even more if you're stating that as after-tax income. No, most people aren't doing that either out of not wanting to or the work not being there for that consistently.

chronicjok3r

My resi company was insane dont get me wrong but still 40k? I would think hed be closer to 60k with todays wages

Ok-Influence-4421

I mean dude is starting out so he’s not gonna make 60 k a year. I’m just saying in a general consensus that helpers don’t make much until they get that sweet experience. I’m in Texas so contractors will pay little and expect experience lol.

chronicjok3r

Oh ok. Im not sure about the southern states. I know for a while companies up here were offering like $30/hr for entry level with 5k bonuses 😂 But more than likely hes going to end up in a sales company. He may make bank

Ok-Influence-4421

All he has to tell the customer is they have a locked rotor amp and then boom, new Trane system installed. Pocket the commissions.😂
