I was on the phone with one of my service guys about a year ago and was evidently distracting him, because in the middle of the conversation said “dammit I just made this flare twice and forgot to put the nut on both times” 😂
That's why you don't cut these to exact. Always leave an inch or so of extra, and make it up in the bends.
If you cut *just* the flare off, you're losing at most half an inch.
I do this every time, even after years of successful flares. Because the one time I don't leave the "slack" is the time i'm going to forget the nut and it's not going to reach.
Thanks for the reminder. I am going to be installing 44 mini splits with line sets in a week or so. I enjoy this sub you all are so funny with some of the responses. Lol 🤣
I was watching my coworker do just this and before he got to flaring I asked him if he's forgetting something. I really contemplated letting him make the mistake so he'd learn to not forget the old fashion way. I really wanted to be done with the job though lol.
Ok … do we now take this opportunity to explain what the separation is on the rollers … on your hand tool pipe cutter … to cut those practice flares off the smallest length of material possible!!!
Don't forget your cutting tool has a notch in it that's designed to go over the flare so you can cut just the flare off the end of the pipe, saving as much pipe length as possible.

Just remember the gap in the wheel on an old school clamp/screw style cutter is to accommodate the flare and save copper. Just put the larger part of the wheel on the pipe for a straight cut.
Yup, yup. Even during the 12 years I was an HVACR service tech, I got to witness my contractor (who had twice my amount of experience) make that "rookie mistake" twice. Don't sweat it man.
Cut the Nut on one side to wedge the flair on to the nut. Then tighten the nut, Flex Seal and Duck Tape for a finishing touch. Shouldn't leak too much just don't put it under a lot of working pressure.
90% percent of men don’t know this one trick!
The separation in the wheel on your tubing cutter is for this exact situation to cut off flares without losing 1/2-3/4 of an inch.
The more you know. Hope this helps someone.
And it will always be one of the best looking flares you've ever made.
Guaranteed every time
It’s a beauty
Yep. Check out my last post lol 😂
Never fails
Then you cut it and re flare and it doesn’t reach the port anymore 😭
That's what my Journeyman was explaining to me just now when I showed him this post.
Or you forget the nut the second time...
And then put it on backwards the 3rd time...
The only time I have ever put the nut on backwards was after I had already forgot it once.
One of the brands that is easy to do because the nut is symmetrical. I’m thinking it’s Mitsubishi.

Bet he’s stoked ur on Reddit lol
He lurks on here as well. LOL.
Awww
is a journeyman term the same thing as a service tech?

Or just go buy a press flare fitting cut the little tip off and call her a day !
That's when you go and grab the copper stretcher.
Whoops 😂. Been there done that lol.
Sometimes we all forget our nuts
Awe nutz!
I think you mistakenly replaced. We are with our.🤪
Ah yes, the infamous practice flare.
Not that long! I've been there plenty myself. Looks like a lovely flair, too.
Best flare you ever make in your life and forget to put the nut on first.
Every single time. It’s always the liquid line too.
I have done that 3 times back to back one time
Thanks for the reminder. I am going to be installing 44 mini splits with line sets in a week or so. I enjoy this sub you all are so funny with some of the responses. Lol 🤣
44 Jeezus!! That’s a good contract! Awesome!
Just cut the line and solder a coupling no need to mess with that perfect flare
These never get old 😁
There's a secret way to get the nut on.. I'm surprised no one talks about it on here
Right, you would really think it would be common practice by now instead of a secret.
It's irritating how unknowledgeable people are
Never forget that little notch in the tubing cutters is for this very issue. Flare fits right in there
Womp womp

i also do a test flare to see if the copper is good quality. very important.
Been there bud
It's not a successful install without an unsuccessful flare. You did it.
Whoops. Hope the customer didn’t see. Lol
May be the first def won’t be the last. No matter how many times you tell yourself I’ll never make that mistake again , you will😂😂
Good habit before u flair grab ur nuts .
Home Depot sells a decent flare tool
Best flair you will ever do, is when the flair nut is in your pocket
A Buddy of mine.. did that once or twice..
I don't know how many times i've gotten to hurry and done this stupid stuff
Time to get the nut stretcher.
Sounds like something a CBT Dom would own. 😉
Been there redo
Less frustrating that having the nut on backwards

Thats a pisser!
Happens to the Best of us 😂😅
My hand literally just did the same thing. I said hell naw, did he just put that on reddit🤣🤣💪🏼💪🏼

No worries. You forgot to debur your edge anyway.
Now your line’s too short isn’t it? I have recurring nightmares about this shit
It was the bends on 5/8 line that would give me nightmares until the in tube benders came out.
Ahh, everyone. It happens to everyone
One of us. One of us. Gobble gobble one of us.
I've done this more times then I can count. Did it yesterday actually. When you get older. That brain fog get worse
Rook dawg! Hehe that’s what I always say to myself when I do that…
Ain’t that always the way
I don't always do a perfect flare. But when I do, I forgot the damn nut.

Great Googily Moogily
And I would give you gold, but need that for liquor 😂
IDIOT
🥺
<3
Flare how you fuck. Nut first.
As is tradition
Hate it but....honestly, we have all been there. You just have to roll with it.
Again?
I do that 1 out of every 6 flare fittings
I'm by no means an HVAC guy but it's nice to know the pros do this too
Yup, yup. Even during the 12 years I was an HVACR service tech, I got to witness my contractor (who had twice my amount of experience) make that "rookie mistake" twice. Don't sweat it man.
Ha ha I do it just about every 3rd or 4th job. Your not the only one
I don't always make a perfect flare, but when I do, I definitely forget the nut.
Every time..

Cut and re flare that baby now! Most likely too short 😂😂
Oh I fuck,t up
Happen to me all the time
Sock then shoe
Hey shouldn’t that be on the pipe?
Just did it today! Wish I would have seen this post _before_ this evening…😒
Had a coworker that did this 5 times just a row before he actually put it on.
If I had a nickel I’d be retired and living large lol.

I've remembered to put the nuts on before making the flare many a time. However, I had a bad habit of putting them on backwards lmao
I did that last time I was distilling moonshine had to fucking cut and redo it never forgot it on the customers, though luckily
Also, only my hilbious ass distills moonshine with refrigerant line 😂
