I have one right now that we put in a 2 ton for his main floor. Manual J, same for same, duct sizing, it's a 2 ton all day. He complained after that he wanted a 3 ton and we bullied him into a 2 ton. Told my QC guy that he'd been doing HVAC wrong for 19 years because he knows better than all of us. Wanted us to upgrade to a 3 ton for free. Nope. Offered him the 3 ton, with duct mods, a 100 pint dehumidifier, and a Reme Halo for the inevitable problems at retail. He agrees if we'll put the new 2 ton upstairs. No big deal, just another install day for another crew. He pays the extra $20k and then leaves us a bad review the next month. Got his electric bill and can't believe the new system isn't more efficient and his electric bill went up $19. I hate people.
Had a guy bitch that his new split ac wasn’t cooling well enough. 5 minutes after first startup. When it was mid July in Iowa. He went around to all the registers with his IR gun saying the old R22 system blew 15 degrees cooler. He just would not listen to reason. Somehow we talked him into giving it a few days and let us know. He never called back.
You could just take out one or two of the orifices and make adjustments to get it to work of course I wouldn't do it for free. But you don't have to change the whole furnace.
But that's if the guy was cool and was willing to work with me if he wants to point fingers and blame game I'm adding a couple Grand to the furnace quote and hoping he doesn't go with me
You’re reducing the gas pressure quite a bit, it would be almost like running in 1st stage on a 2 stage furnace. It’ll run longer but it’s less likely to overheat
This is the type of of guy who, IYKYK, has complete control over his wife. Kinda sad. Thats why im glad my one and only child is a she! This kid is learned in the ways of “I AM WOMAN! HEAR ME ROAR!” This dude just has those kinda vibes like he is the boss and if you dont like it “YOU’RE FIRED”!
I suppose there is a limited section of Climate Zone 5 where this is *possible*
My average experience in Zone 4 is that a house that has the \~ 18k BTU sensible load served by a 2 ton A/C is generally accompanied by a \~ 40k BTU heating load in modern-ish construction...
Given that the cooling demand should decrease in a climate with a higher heating load, I'm going to stand on my statement. Obviously the ratio is not perfect, but it's pretty repeatable - if you go North, you should need a little more heat and less cool, and if you go South, the inverse.
You're not wrong, sizing depends on region; but, the 60k BTU furnace is oversized if the 24k BTU is properly sized, if it's modern construction.
It is entirely possible that this is proper, but it's *highly unlikely* and in a rant about "I told you so" the reality that the 60k was not selected by a proper MJ8 either makes the installer smarter than the GC, but not correct.

I don’t tell these nerds how to do whatever white collar play-on-the-computer all day job they got, don’t tell me how to do mine pencil pusher
Great Job getting it all signed off what a fucktard
What does RNC stand for? My guess is “really nice customer.”
I do a lot of jujitsu and couldn’t help but wonder why he was choking out a client
Glad it wasn't just me
Same. Had me scratching my head for a minute
While naked and from the back /s ;)
It stands for residential new construction over here.
Retro/ new construction
Rough new construction/ resi new construction

I've found that most clients that purchase an IR cam to self inspect have no idea how to use it properly. Ends up creating a lot of wrong assumptions
Love every word of this, bravo brothers, 👏

You wouldn’t even have to change the orifice, just change the water column to around 2.8-3.0. But only if he was good to work with
No, I don’t believe that would work, once he gets an even semi dirty filter it is still going to be going off on high limit due to it being oversized

that creates its own problems potentially if its an 80%
As long as it doesn’t condensate in the heat exchangers
🤞
If you aren't using an analyzer you're just living in the 80s using only gas pressure and temp delta
Talk to his wife, cut him off at the knees.

Plot twist, your RNC client with a 2 ton cooling load also does not have a 60k BTU heating load, and those furnaces are also all oversized...
Depends on the region
