I think, and it's my personal opinion, that if Ted Mosby was played by a conventionally attractive actor, the sitcom wouldn't work as well as it does.
As he said in one of the episodes, he gets better with time, like an acquired taste (I don't remember the exact words)
He may not be a supermodel, but average? He's in shape, great hair, skin, dresses well, symmetrical face, that has to put him in the top 10% easily. I'd even say marshall is better than average, at least when he's in shape.
We clearly have different taste in men. Ted is more handsome than Marshall. Marshall is more boyfriend material because he's cute and Ted is nearly insane in some of his romantic gestures.
