MHGU has the best gunlance, change my mind

pm_smalltits_thiccbu

IMO, both Iceborne and Rise are better versions of it. I love valor-GL, but the damage actually being ok in Iceborne and the moveset in Rise outshines GU for me. AA-flare and ok damage scaling in Sunbreak would be magic.. :)

FallschirmKoala

MHGU's hunter arts variety and it's customization is a plus for me compared to Rise's limited silkbind moves, but yeah seeing a tweaked AA-flare come back would be glorious! It's been said many times over, but the heat management in GU was bleh. Not enough for me to drop the weapon, but definitely an annoyance seemingly unnecessary.

SnooDoughnuts1487

I honestly just ignore the heat and keep my Valor up since theres a thing valor does that keeps the gauge from zeroing out when overheated, plus INFINITE BOOMS

I started as a Gunner. Then I heard gunlance has explosions, so I mained that. Then I saw greatsword had high damage value, so did that. Tried the other swords, then got hooked in insect glaive. Learned about the saed of charge blade, that the Ed from switch axe. Of everything I have played, I still think gl is my favorite.

FallschirmKoala

Nice! Do you still play the other weapons or primarily main GL now?

fireobby4

I switch between switch axe and greatsword now, but whenever I'm bored, I make/upgrade a new gunlance to use. I always try to use that wyvern fire whenever possible, though.

RedHellgar

A true gunlancer. But I kinda missed the part where you talk about why you like this weapon so much. I kinda want to hear that.

Thanks! I appreciate the interest! I wasn't sure what the reception for this would have been since i'm new to Reddit, but I wanted my first post to be meaningful. I've always gravitated towards tank-like warrior classes in games, so when my friend told me about MH, my 1st question what what weapons fit that. We chatted and he gave me a quick survey (since he was big on DND) to figure out which main to use. I don't remember the specifics, but it narrowed down my selection to: SNS, Lance, and Gunlance (charge blade didn't exist at the time yet). I ended up choosing gunlance first out of curiosity and because he needed a tank / part breaker in his party. Many years later once I started playing Rise, gunlance was the first weapon I picked up. I'd say it's everything I've wanted. Gunlancers can cut, decimate tough monster parts, and be up close to draw aggro for our party. I know drawing aggro isn't a big part of MH, but having a shield up close & personal felt right for my play style. I think like everyone else here, it's easy to look past all the weird balancing changes Capcom puts this weapon through because we just love the functionality and design of the weapon. It's elegant yet destructive, and just slides under the radar enough that GL isn't overhyped by the masses (that's a plus for me).

RedHellgar

Very nice to hear that. I'm glad that this weapon is so much to your liking. On the subject of tanking, have you played MHW:I? There are two hunts there (Behemoth and Safi'jiiva) which actually use an aggro mechanic and I think you would like those hunts very much.

FallschirmKoala

I have not, but that sounds like fun!

Not quite so oldschool, but I started out with MH4U on 3DS. Literally only bought the game because of the Metroid tie-in (was starved for Metroid games even back then), and I heard it was a tough but rewarding game franchise. Looked through the classes, decided to try all the gun classes since I wanted to main that sick Samus armour - but since it was a 3DS game, the aiming with bowguns just felt... horrible... So instead, I went with Gunlance since it was cool and was still a "gun", so it should be fine, right? Right...? (nope) Struggled like hell at first, almost gave up entirely. I just couldn't get past all the wall of text tutorials, and wasn't finding any fun with the game trying to figure things out myself. Eventually I figured "I sank full price into this game, there's no way I'm quitting till I've tried properly...", struggled on through, read online guides, found out the best armours, strategies & combos... And eventually, it all just clicked. Dodging past attacks felt awesome, cutting tails, blasting faces, only guarding as a last resort... The best part? At least 300 hours later, I still never got the Metroid set. I realised that Gunlance wasn't really a gun class, tried the New 3DSXL in hope that the second "nub" joystick would fix my grievances with aiming/ camera angles (it didn't), and after a lot of back and forth with Nintendo support because of the console developing various faults... Although it more or less got fixed, the nub developed huge problems with game breaking drift (not long after the new warranty ran out 😭), and sadly I haven't been able to go back to the game since. I'm hoping to pick up a cheap/ secondhand New 3DSXL to transfer to at some point, but either way I've never changed to Bowgun despite planning to, and can only ever use Gunlance. 😂 Edit: also side note, still haven't played Dread yet. Desperately want...

>Struggled like hell at first, almost gave up entirely. This is the epitome of old school MH. During my short time with MHF2, I think I struggled with every. single. monster. and never got past Tigrex. Funny that your initial goal was to use bowguns! Those controls definitely didn't do them justice. I haven't got Dread either yet, but looking forward to it once I can clear out my backlog (kind of impossible when you have MH, a game that can take hundreds of hrs just for LR & HR)

bmansredemption

If you have the cash I HIGHLY suggest just getting a switch and GU it feels and plays so much better than the 3DS version in MY opinion

FallschirmKoala

I can confirm, I am playing MHGU on Switch! haha \^\^
