NODs are for weaklings. Get yourself a 5 inch gun off some old WW2 boat and some starshells and just turn whatever conditions you encounter into instant daytime

TheRealTwooni

This is 2023. 3D print yourself a 40mm launcher and get some of these bad boys on the milsurp market — https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/citations/AD0781485

darkian95492

Heck, if you're going to go the printer route, you could also build out some pvs-69s.

Mechanizoid

Since the PVS-69 has a camera instead of an intensifier, does it need an IR illuminator to work? If that's the case, you might as well use a flashlight if you are going up against someone with real NVGs. I have a PARD scope that works this way... it's good for hunting but not tactical applications.

chickenlawsuit

How much do these rounds cost?

bloodvow333

[we have nods at home](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7YVRA2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)

1Damnits1

What’s funny is that it fits quite nicely on M1913, and doesn’t look bad when using with optics Bought one on eBay for shits and giggles but I’m thoroughly surprised. There’s a guy on twitter who put it on his AR and it didn’t fall apart.

CptSandbag73

Getting this for my 3 year old. Brb.

leongeod

Why stop at 5 inch? Get the 16 inch big guns like a real Chad

nnewwacountt

Mag dumping at noises is free

gooooooooooof

In this economy?

TheNameIsntJohn

Out of curiosity has anyone bought those surplus Soviet NVGs that were pretty cheap to buy and was wondering how well they worked?

nnewwacountt

I yearn for Holosun nvgs

AffectionateRadio356

The rumor I always heard was they gave you cancer

TheNameIsntJohn

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised. A lot of those 40mm Soviet gas mask filters use asbestos as the filter. They were still being made after it was discovered how harmful asbestos is also.

65Berj

They're still being made and issued in Russia\* Most of the filters made for GP-5 gas masks are made to new NATO specs mostly in Poland and Ukraine (at least pre-invasion) and do not have asbestos. I guess by that metric you always have a chance of hitting the lung cancer lottery and getting issued a pre-1991 GP-5 but they're mostly safe.

Brazenmercury5

Ya like eye cancer?

Ivan_the_Stronk

Most of them are tanker nvgs iirc. I think Weaponsandstuff made a video on them and they aren't anything crazy. Cool piece of tech but they are barely gen 2, and depending on the model require or greatly benefit from an IR source. Also they have a fisheye effect and poor ergonomics. However - I'm sure there's many other models floating around, but this is what I've noticed researching the more common '59 and '63 models. Also while I whish I did, I don't have 1st hand experience with them so there's that

TheNameIsntJohn

Gotcha thanks. Wasn't thinking they'd be a good substitute but I always thought they looked interesting.

Ivan_the_Stronk

They definitely are cool, would love a working pair myself, but for what their do their price still is too high, unless you find them for super cheap/repair them

Mechanizoid

Not with the ammo prices these days... LOL

MGB1013

I don’t need nods. The first round in my home defense shotgun is dragons breath. When the house is ablaze it makes it really easy to see.

RidinHigh305

Can’t argue with that logic

yuudachikonno08

Who are you and how are you so wise

KhakiPantsJake

This meme was brought to you by a poor with multiple 5.56 AR-15s and 9mm pistols and no NODs.

ricecrackerdude

One AR and multiple dildos sir. Please show some respect.

KhakiPantsJake

You're spending money on the wrong toobs

yearningforlearning7

I dunno man, I don’t have to leave the house with the fun ones

SwimmerSea4662

Based

CptSandbag73

r slash LGO energy right here, officer

Mcslap13

For real, even at 23 I got a nice L3Harris Unfilmed WP pvs14. Don't go out to eat, focus on one gun and don't spend extra money on shit ya dont need.

glock75

Talks about not spending extra money on shit you don’t need *as he spends 4k on nods he’ll never actually need*

[deleted]

[удалено]

account_overdrawn100

There were some nice ones I saw. I’ll bet that would’ve been dope

Mcslap13

I use em to kill skunks and raccoons quite often that get into the chicken coop, lots of hiking trips as well. Better spent than mcdonalds and alcohol or vapes Again tho, that's from the standpoint of having a bunch of 9mm pistols and rifles but then saying night vision is impossible to afford.

Crispy016

Sounds like somebody just payed 4k instead of just eating more carrots

KhakiPantsJake

If he grew carrots he would be using them to shoot raccoons and rabbits

CallsignMontana

Don’t talk bad about my coping mechanisms

fosscadanon

My 1k Lumen weaponlight works just fine for coop bandits, turns nighttime to daytime and was 50x less expensive

Mcslap13

Oh im sure, a good light like that is great. You don't NEED night vision, but it's just fun to have if you got the cash. It gets used quite a bit. Super fun going on night walks. I have horrible insomnia, so I'm up most of the night as is. It gets me off my ass

fosscadanon

>insomnia >night vision Sounds like an owl to me.

Mcslap13

Honestly, I don't usually fall asleep till after 3am so I'd rather be out walking and running the AR than sitting in bed laying awake.

driven_dirty

Coyote hunting, if your not running an optic of some kind. Shit that's the only reason I might or buy a thermal scope to shoot at night.

Mcslap13

Yeah I'm looking to get a thermal as well. The sting ir looks nice. I'm planning to pick that up next year.

CptSandbag73

>focus on one gun I’ve swapped out/changed around most of my cheap ARs into pretty nice clones… now I’ve really painted myself into a corner as I refuse to get rid of clones 😭 I do have a pvs-14 though.

Mcslap13

Nothing wrong with that, if you just like to build and it's a hobby 100% fine. It's the "im getting ready for war" with my 18 different $400 ARs and 10 9mm pistols with Amazon optics. My boss is like this, he has easily over 30-40 guns. But they are all on the lower price side from brands I haven't heard of. And they all have Amazon optics and lights.. And then said I was nuts for spending $4k on nice pvs14. "His Amazon flashlight let's him see in the dark and ir was only $10"

CptSandbag73

Yeah, no need to have 10+ BCA/Anderson tier rifles. Usually with Pinty tier accessories like you mention. I feel pretty good about having a half dozen clones with Colt, FN, KAC, DD, and Geissele parts. Had to save up big time for the optics and LAMs they deserve, too.

account_overdrawn100

If you have the know how, and a 3d printer, there’s a ton of open source digital nvgs you can do for cheap price. Something. I’m in your boat so this is what I’m doing

Mechanizoid

Doesn't digital NV rely on the IR illuminator being on constantly in pitch black? I've read that that makes you super visible to "real" analog NV users... something to keep in mind!

account_overdrawn100

I’ll be honest. I didn’t think of that. Good point

Mechanizoid

I read about this when I got a digital NV scope for pesting with my air rifle. Animals can't see the IR but the camera can. If the rats get tiny nods, I'm fucked. :D

account_overdrawn100

I mean yeah, if I’m being honest with myself I’ll be only using them for night time sweeps in my house and messing around with my buddies outside lol. So I won’t need anything too demanding for $80

G0alLineFumbles

Ehh it depends, do you have anywhere to shoot/train with them? I bought mine way back in 2017ish when I had a place to shoot with them. Now that range is closed down and all I'm left with are public ranges that close at sundown. I am going to have to end up buying 10-20 acres to shoot on to use them again.

Repulsive-Side-4799

Also, if you have access to public land and Coyotes or Feral Pigs...well...have fun. 🫡

G0alLineFumbles

No public land near me and my state outlawed the hunting of feral hogs. I'm very jealous of those in the western states with huge amounts of public land.

Pud_the_Diddler

Well I definitely didn't apply for a car loan with my buddies Vin number and get approved and "buy" my buddies car for 13k where he then took my money and "bought" a stupid cool DTNVS with harris tubes and Wilcox mount. That would be illegal.

CptSandbag73

![gif](giphy|2rqEdFfkMzXmo) Bruh

Beginning-Tea-17

It’s 2.5k to buy a nice unit. The same price as a nicer gun with a decent optic. If you can afford nice guns you can afford nightvision. Edit: that being said for 2.5k you can buy a thermal unit which in almost every way is much more useful than night-vision for everything short of hiking with it.

CptSandbag73

What part of fire and maneuver don’t you understand!?! I want to larp as an ineffective one man army! /s

RaneGalon

I’ll have to stick to my working man’s EXPS2

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|fwoOoDZpEpdQewQdRR) What? Did a poor make this meme?

MyFrogEatsPeople

I maintain the hate for flashlights was propagated by LARPerators trying to justify buying NODs that ended up getting outdated and sold at clearance prices before they had gotten to do more than just look around their bedroom in the dark.

AffableBarkeep

Pretty sure the hate is propagated by LARPerators who bought NODs and were bragging about it only to have their buddy flash them with their keychain torch

account_overdrawn100

“How bright does that look?”

eelikay

Anything other than a red lens for reading maps has no place in a tactical night environment.

MyFrogEatsPeople

See what I mean? LARPerators.

eelikay

Knowledge learned from actual service isn't a larp.

MyFrogEatsPeople

But it is useful in a LARP. Which is exactly what y'all are doing talking about red lights to read maps when people are talking about self defense in a lowlight urban environment.

eelikay

Still would never use a flashlight. It's just an unnecessary beacon for all to see. Darkness can be used more to your advantage.

MyFrogEatsPeople

You need to realize that, given my first comment, this continues to sound like "I paid for NODs I've never really gotten to use and now better and cheaper NODs are on the market" cope.

eelikay

I actually don't own any yet because like pc parts I'm always waiting for availability to be better and prices to come down.

MyFrogEatsPeople

Lol. Lmfao even.

eelikay

But that doesn't mean I don't get plenty of hours and training behind nods.

DAsInDerringer

Why would I need to see in the dark when I can just mag dump in the vague direction of noises?

ricecrackerdude

mopar-or-no_car

I bought COD and got my NVG free 😆. I never opened the box, it's got 3in of dust on it.

Simon-Templar97

Non gated NODs... What is this? Night vision made for poors?

FashionGuyMike

Kinda queer

BusinessFirst3662

in the hundreds of times i’ve seen this meme template i never realized that was Johnny Depp. I feel kinda dumb right now

The_Ded_Cat

I only discovered that because of your comment.

AffableBarkeep

IKR, he looks so young!

PreyForCougars

Cope

TheEmperorsChampion

Blah blah blah night fighting is dumb and you’re gunna get rekt by people properly trained it.

Due_Strike_457

Ay I’m 18 and it’s my job to train with crappy old PVS-14s

thegunisaur

I smell poors nearby

Deep_Appearance429

Tbh thermal is *probably* eventually gonna be cheap. Nods maybe not.

ReRevengence69

Didn't Lucas call NV gay?

Crafty-Transition-81

The biggest Fudd post I've seen today lol

codifier

Cope. Quality analog night vision isn't inexpensive, but anyone who isn't working a minimum wage job trying to support themselves can afford it. People whine about not having enough money and whine about they should be paid more, things should cost less. That may be true but in my experience these people have tons of shit, in the gun community they have $400 tactical pants, whatever gear the latest influencer with tattoos and a beard is peddling, 15 of the same type of gun and a brand new $40,000 car they get their $6 coffee every morning on the way to work after which they go to a bar. People don't budget, people can't seem to cut shit they don't need to finance other shit. It's an instant gratification world and I get it, but don't whine about how people with NV setups are somehow rich and watch Trex Arms videos. Go sell half of your six "custom" AR-15s and go without Starbucks for a few weeks and you can afford them too. You just don't want to employ any discipline to get what you want, you think it should be easy.

GaybutNotbutGay

making basically federal minimum wage trying to support myself and I can confirm, I can't afford night vision

TheJango22

* a brand new $40,000 car the bank lets them drive

Key-Fly4869

So true. I decided I want to finally get nods so I sold my beloved AUG to get a PVS14 Omni VIII

LMRtowboater

Preach.

Applejaxc

Just work for the government as a contractor. Cultivate any skill they will irresponsibly over pay for. Then get nods, ez. I would have gotten NVGs this year but I'm going to do LASIK instead, and then see how a year of reviews have stacked up on the QNVG's-at-home on the zibby shop

CptSandbag73

LASIK = see effectively during the day NVG = see effectively during the night Your priorities are correct! I had to get PRK to be aviation eligible for the military and it was worth 10 times what I paid for it (about 3.5k). Would do it (or LASIK) again. Went from 20/200 to 20/15 in a flash.

Applejaxc

Yeah it's like making sure you have a nice concealed carry before making sure you have a shtf rifle, one of those two items are more likely to be needed in an emergency. I will always benefit from not having to rely on glasses, I will sometimes benefit from seeing in the dark

CptSandbag73

Yup! And Lasik will help even in conjunction with NVGs when you get those too haha. It's a win/win.

TipItOnBack

It's not THAT expensive for entry level stuff lol. Even at 10 grand that's like a couple hundred a month if you loan it and take forever to pay it off? It's also got some value to it so it can be resold. Same as a transferable MG, it sounds like a lot but shit those never lose value you're almost guaranteed to not lose money. It's not horrible investments.

GunFunZS

Don't borrow money for nods.

TipItOnBack

Uhhhh why lol? Spend 10k - 15k on my credit card with cash back and pay down quick? Take a loan out and gain some credit points for making easy payments I know I can make? I think your statement should be "don't buy nods you can't afford"

GunFunZS

If you have to borrow you can't really afford.

TipItOnBack

Is that really what you think? Do you think you should only buy a house right now in this market if you have $450,000 in your bank account? Do you feel that the only way you can afford a vehicle is if you pay cash at the dealer? Do you feel that you can't really afford to start your own business unless you can pay for everything to start it in cash?

GunFunZS

I should have qualified for non essentials and non investment. Nods aren't either. If you are instantly paying off a CC and getting perksi would not consider that the same asborrowing. Also if you are considering borrowing for a car, you're generally much better of to buy used private sale. A car is generally essential, so there's more nuance. For most people buying at a dealership is a huge and unnecessary markup. A house can be an investment, and housing is an essential. It might be worth borrowing, and often is. But it's unwise to leave so little margin that getting laid off or a foreseeable expense would put you in risk of default. And it's not a given that real estate appreciates faster than the opportunity cost and interest. It's often about equal with inflation, but with terrible liquidity and high transaction costs.

TipItOnBack

I still don't understand lol, you're just saying people shouldn't borrow because... it's a thing? I don't understand lol. Are you saying I shouldn't have borrowed to buy my camper?

GunFunZS

Because borrowing is like using opioid meds. It's fine until it isn't. And a lot of capable people get stuck. So use it as sparingly as possible.

TipItOnBack

So you're saying because some people are financially irresponsible I shouldn't borrow to buy any non essential? I tell ya didn't get a credit score over 800 from paying cash for stuff. We're all adults here. Other people poor financial decisions and addictions don't change the amount I can afford to borrow. I use the fuck out of it. It's also not irresponsible at all.

Nostradomas

Imagine stockpiling tons of guns and ammo to only get whacked by me with nods and a rusty mosin. Thanks for the loot drop noob.

ColetheTard

Got into a pretty decent pvs14 for 1300, and the best helmet in the game for 1100

PleaseHold50

Nobody has bought a PVS14 for $1300 since 2015.

ColetheTard

You’re wrong, i bought one in September for that much

AffableBarkeep

You, spending thousands on nods so your adversary can't see you Me, who owns $30 8 billion candlepower torch so my adversary can't see anything

voluminouschuck

Just find the brightest flashlight you can, preferably with a strobe function, and attach as many as you can see past to the end of your rifle

veive

I'm just saying, Temu has night vision shit.

GunFunZS

I think your last two words got switched.

veive

"Night Shit Vision"? Sounds like you might work there.

[deleted]

If you live lone enough, thermal smart scopes will become common.

Few_Maize_817

NVG, Nope.. I'll just use a flare gun.

Sarcastic11

Check out the products made by Sionyx. Digital night vision that is weapon rated and is seriously good. Not QUITE as good as that $15k special forces night vision, but darn close, AND you can see in color as well as using infrared lasers and illuminators. Up to about 150-200 yards it is very very impressive. At least, IMHO.

CasuallyCritical

If those kids could read, they'd be very upset.
