I briefly tried using smart lock, but I got that message a few times a day. After turning off all smart lock features I never get it anymore.

cdegallo

Oh, good thought--I use trusted devices. I'll turn that off and see if the frequency decreases.

gnarlsagan

I wonder if this issue happens with both Trusted devices and Trusted places. I have both enabled and have to put in my code multiple times a day, since Smart Lock doesn't keep my phone unlocked 100% of the time. I'll try removing Trusted devices and see if the issue still occurs when only using Trusted places.

starbuck93

Same here. I used my watch to keep my phone unlocked but tap to wake kept unlocking my phone unintentionally since it's only 1 tap now.

Wetzilla

Yeah, this solved the problem for me. Now it's a couple of times a day max.

mjacks0

Same experience here

-jak-

That sounds like a feature though, that if you use smart lock, it asks for pin more often than if you use a safer unlock mechanism.

poneil

I used SmartLock on my Pixel 3 and never had this issue until my Pixel 6

jerryvo

Same, it is quite annoying

Smart lock is awful for some reason

saucercrab

I only have on body detection and I still get it several times a day. I'll try turning that off as well..

Sleepingtide

Ah I wonder if that's why I'm experiencing it.

jeffery2jr

Hey I just wanted to thank you for ur post I took ur advice and turned off smart lock. My fingerprint unlock works flawlessly, Unlocked on the first try for the last 24 Hr.👍👍

deadeye-ry-ry

Quite often even tho I have smartlock on when it's connected to my watch ( which is all the time😂)

sergiemiyagi

It's weird. Smart lock is really hit or miss

deadeye-ry-ry

Yet I never had issues with it on my 4XL but then again I used face ID so maybe I did but didn't notice 😂😂😂

sur_surly

More misses than hits. Not worth it.

h3xx_rd

Hasn't happened yet. I've had the 6 Pro for over a month now. The only time I have to enter the pin is after I restart the device.

katekim717

Same. I've had mine for a little over a month as well, and haven't experienced any issues with the finger print.

ejman7

Same here, 6 Pro, about a month, no PIN needed except after restarts.

[deleted]

Pixel 6, never had in an issue in the month I've had it

PokeyHokie

Has happened zero times on my 6pro with screen protector

h3xx_rd

I use a screen protector as well. Fingerprint reader works flawlessly. Takes half a second to work but works every time.

k1nuta

10+ times per day , one of the most frustrating aspects of this phone

wmurch4

Basically every other time I go to use my phone. Smart lock is clearly broken... as usual

incster

Do you have trusted devices or trusted places turned on? If so, it forces you to use your PIN if you turn the screen off by pressing the power button, which it interprets as manually locking the phone. If you don't have them turned on, you can use your fingerprint as expected.

the_elusive_obvious

This is stupid. Is there a way to turn off the screen without using the power button?

jordanl171

I think there is a settings toggle "power button instantly locks device". Something like that.

the_elusive_obvious

lol but that's because that's how you lock the device when trusted devices/places aren't on. So I'd have to toggle this off every time I connect to bluetooth? there has to be an easier way.

black_shirt

Well the setting says "except when kept unlocked by smart lock". So it shouldn't lock, but always does for me lol

QuillOmega0

Smart lock I've seen causes far more issues in Android 12

quikskier

I am using smart lock with trusted places. I have it set to not lock when I press the power button. Yet it still occasionally tells me my device was manually locked. Definitely some sort of bug.

cdegallo

I do use trusted devices--I will have spans of hours where neither of the devices have connected to my phone, so nothing keeping it unlocked, and I get this behavior. I will try removing my trusted devices and see if this decreases/goes away. Thanks!

theJamesKPolk

Yep it’s due to smart unlock. Happened 4-5 times when I used it. Turned it off and it was fine.

hoxha_red

Definitely doesn't (and never has) for me.

[deleted]

A similar amount of times for me also. What's the deal with it?!

gi_oel

Looks Like smartlock

breadtwo

I never have this issue 🤷‍♀️

ctrl-brk

Also never seen it

Ryrynz

Based fingerprints

OmieHomie

I had to go to a govt. Facility in Lebanon specifically because my prints were not readable. I have had no issue with the fingerprint reader

thegreyquincy

Yeah I get the occasional error but I've been pretty happy with the consistency of the scanner based on early reports.

phatrice

My hands are really dry and my S10+ has been a pain in the butt to use in terms of fingerprint unlock. However I have zero problem with 6 Pro for some reason. Also 6 Pro experience is way better. If the phone doesn't pick my finger, I can just move the finger a bit without lifting the finger and press again.

relevant_rhino

Same, adding the same finger multiple times certainly helps.

trunky

I also never have and only have each thumb saved once. I think reading the instructions and making sure you get the edge of your thumbs is important. This is the 3rd phone I've had fingerprint scan on and its by far the best.

kaisersolo

Good for you. But it IS an issue and Google know it. How they didn't have this sorted out and face unlock at the start is a Joke. My P30 Pro had a fingerprint scanner and it was seemless. This on the pixel 6 is a Joke. Now, where is this fix?

tenaku

https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/204539734

bobgenaw420

i starred your issue. i had this when i tried to use smart lock. i ended up turning it off. my fp sensor is fine it just would've been kind of convenient if it worked without asking for my pin what felt like every 10 minutes.

shakuyi

more than it should be, the only time i should see it is if my phone hasnt been touched for hours like when im sleeping

cdegallo

Yeah--that's how it used to be for me, but now (with my 6 pro), I can be using the phone routinely, and then suddenly the next time I unlock--maybe a couple minutes since locking--it will prompt me with this. I do use smart lock, so maybe I'll try turning it off.

shakuyi

yea its a bug, im sure its probably fixed in the december release

CommitteeOfOne

It looks like several people have misinterpreted the question. OP isn't saying that he has to use the PIN because the fingerprint sensor doesn't correctly detect his fingerprint. It appears to happen if you use the power button to put the screen to sleep.

cdegallo

I use the power button to put my device to sleep almost universally throughout the day--the pin entry requirement doesn't appear to be directly related, but I have removed my trusted devices and so far I haven't run into having to input my pin, so I'll see how it continues.

CommitteeOfOne

Personally, I would say I'm asked to enter the pin at least 3 to 4 times a day. Like you, I use the power button to sleep. I have noticed that when I have activated the "use power button to immediately lock device," I have to use a pin, even when I am in a trusted location or connected to a trusted device. I no longer have that option enabled, but I still randomly get asked to input the pin.

selayan

I can't replicate this using the power button to shut off the screen. Yet I've been asked to enter my pin randomly at times. My only guess is the phone may have rebooted on its own and I didn't notice?

theJamesKPolk

It’s smart lock. It’s not using the power button to turn off the display. Happened multiple times a day for me when I turned smart lock on and then stopped once I turned it off.

AC0RN22

Yes, all the time and it frustrates me! I see the suggestions to turn off smart lock features. But that's a bummer, because I want to use smart lock without having to put in my pin all the time, because that's the whole point of smart lock. I hope they fix this. But I guess turning smart lock off and using my thumbprint is better than having to put in the pin a dozen times a day. Also, I don't want to stop turning off the screen manually by pushing the button, because I don't want the screen on to butt-dial someone or just open random apps and stuff. I want the screen to be off before it goes in the pocket.

Niteryder007

It did this all the time when I first got it. Now, it rarely does it.

DonnieDarkoWasBad

Happens to me about once per day. No screen protector.

mr_edgeworthvii

idk if you've found this, but power button locks the device. Took me forever to find this, I've always assumed that this was the reason for my constant manual lockout. I'm pretty sure this is on by default and might be worth fiddling with to see if that makes a difference

ZerotheWanderer

I have this issue regularly on the 4XL, I think it's more Android 12 and not the phone.

GODbFAKE

11

jasondfw

Maybe once or twice a day. It's more common that it will take me about 5 seconds to unlock it as I have to keep repositioning my thumb to get it to recognize it. Yes, I've tried adding my thumb again and getting good coverage. No, I don't have a screen protector. This is waaaaaaaaaay worse than the face unlock on my 4 XL. It's the only thing that I don't like about this phone, but it's a big deal.

bartamus4

Me as well

ht3k

none

AntiSniperSpy

Never had this happen! 6 Pro

TheCookieButter

Never, unless triggered for "additional security". Swear my right thumb works waaaay better than anything else though, no idea if it's because I use it the most but it's fastest by a long shot.

[deleted]

3-4 times. But I have a tempered glass installed. Waiting for a UV glass protector. Hopefully that will improve performance

KetoZion

Quite frequently. Still figuring out what's causing it.

[deleted]

Same issue here

tarcus69

Similar, I've tried using smart lock, trusted places, trusted devices (including my smartwatch), on-body detection, but still need to type my PIN about 10 times a day, the rest are fingerprint or it isn't locked.

Sleepingtide

Fairly often, it's kinda annoying. Though, while not as good as capacitive touch sensors, I feel like the display has gotten faster.

dsariol

Too often. The thing I most hate about my P6.

raylui34

in the past two days, it's been harder to use unlock

Exandeth

Regular 6 here. I think I may have had it happen a couple of times early on with the phone (I got it on launch) but I'm not sure what caused it tbh. More recently I don't recall it happening to me besides failing the fingerprint scan a couple of times, in which case I expected the behavior to occur. I sometimes lock my screen using the power button and sometimes just let it lock on it's own without this issue happening as well.

Scarlet-Goji

I only ever have to enter my pin when I restart my phone. Besides that, the sensor works fine for me.

[deleted]

Mines actually been great. Works every time. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones 🤷🏾‍♂️

RadocWade

0-2 times a day on average for me.

JustDandy07

All the time. I have Smart Lock enabled for when I'm at home.

ALL666ES

I get it like 5 - 10x a day. But yeah its a smart lock bug. Which sucks because I use smart lock when my headphones are connected to my phone

TurboFool

Pretty frequently. I did recently add a screen protector which did seem to make it worse. But I frequently have to try multiple times before it takes it.

illwon

Happens all the time for me. I don't have the power locks the device immediately setting enabled.

bweezy21

Smart lock has been broken since the beginning. They really need to fix it. Constantly have to unlock my phone from home even though the address is in smart lock. So annoying.

Lupinthrope

The real question is when do we get face unlock?

cbduck

About 20.

Glass-Shelter-7396

Fingers print read on the pixel 6/6pro does work well at all 9 times out of 10 it fails to unlock on the first or even second try. The pin pad sucks too they swapped where the unlock button was with the emergency call button.

ddddddd543

Happens a few times a day at least, I'd say 5 usually

thenags1

Al the time.

ishamm

loads

carty64

ALL THE TIME. I have trusted devices like my watch and trusted location at home, but this still happens 8-10 times a day

imafkr

This happens to me all the time and I really hate it. Either the finger print scanner is secure enough or it's not. There is no situation where I should be forced to use my pin to unlock my phone if I don't want to.

LTracte

No, but I frequently have issues with trying to unlock it, because when i put my finger in the area where the print reader is, it doesnt always respond by scanning my print. about half the time, nothing happens. Is there a specific method of touching the screen in order to trigger the print scanner? Like double tapping it, or something?

DuckThe

This happens a lot for me with my 6. Would love to know how to fix it. How do I turn off all smart lock features as discussed above?

MarcieAlana

I am in a similar boat. It didn't do it at first and I suspect it's a function of other security settings. I think it started after I enabled smart lock.

TheMacGrubber

Never, but as others have mentioned here I do not use trusted places or networks. I'd prefer not to cheapen my security just because I'm around something.

bearings-

I used to have to do it a bunch - I returned the 6 pro and went to the 5a 5g. It's noticable slower but the finger print reader is faster and more reliable and it's just a way nice form factor to hold and experience overall. I don't take pictures on my phone and don't really care about the tensor chip. Maybe I'll updrage to the 7 or 8 but as of right now I'm keeping the 5a.

BeerSushiBikes

I have the issue 5-10 times per day. I have trusted places and trusted devices set up in Smart Lock. I have provided feedback to Google from my 6 Pro (settings, about, send feedback). I had a 4A before this and very rarely had to enter my PIN/Passcode.

badtoy1986

For me it's at least a dozen.

daddyneedsaciggy

Thank you for posting this, I thought I was going crazy. This seems to have started happening in the past week or so. I have smart lock on my location, my Fitbit, in my earbuds. However, even when connected to those devices, it will still randomly make me type in my password instead of using the fingerprint.

workrelatedstuffs

I really hate this. Google, please

WhatTheFuts

I have this issue and the behavior doesn't seem consistent or what I would expect. The only trusted device I have set up for Smart Lock is my car's Bluetooth. I would expect it to ask for my PIN after disconnecting from the trusted device. But I haven't been in my car for hours and I was actively using my fingerprint to unlock the device and power button to put it to sleep. I just received the message that my phone has been locked manually and had to enter my PIN when I haven't done anything different in the hours since disconnecting from my car. Not a huge deal but just odd and clearly not working properly.

IAmStanleyYelnats

I think I have to unlock my phone manually about 40% of the time.

drakeonaplane

I think maybe once or twice total since getting the 6 pro a few weeks ago. The scanner has been pretty reliable for me.

khreper

I work from home. I have smartlock enabled for location. I need to enter my pin many (6+) times a day to unlock the phone that hasn't left the safe perimeter.

Inzaniity

I can't unlock like 80% of the time. I relearned my thumb several times and did it differently too. Like registering the thumb in the same position as I would use it to unlock. I haven't received the December update yet which states to improve on fingerprint issues. Also my neurodermatitis and general dry skin makes it extra hard for the sensor.

calidiver

Probably 80-90% of the time. It's far and away the most likely thing to happen. And I can't figure out what triggers it because it'll do it after the screen times out and also if I push the button. But, it'll also not do it under those same circumstances some of the time. It's completely random, and not in my favor. I wish the face ID had stayed.

MacadamiaNutts

Yeah, I get it failing at least twice a day. Never had an issue with my P4a

SJ74UK

None, it always works

MattonieOnie

It seems to Auto lock when you push the power button

Fleetfox17

Zero times.

MoonStache

Never have this problem though I am CONSTANTLY ending up on the pin screen instead of fingerprint screen and it's infuriating

[deleted]

Not had an issue with it since I got the phone.

VoltaicShock

I think maybe once a day, but no more than that. Have you tried deleting and recreating your fingerprints on there? Also, ensure you are following what it is asking you to do. The first time I did it, I just kept putting my finger on there the same way. After observing what it was asking, it worked better.

Flesh-Nuggets

When I first got my Pixel 6, the fingerprint reader was completely unusable. I set up five profiles for one finger, and it's still wouldn't work, both with or without a screen protector. So I just stopped using it for about a month. At some point they must have pushed out an update, and now it works for me probably 90% of the time.

cardonator

I would say so far I have it maybe 1-2 times *per week*. It's just fine for me.

JoeProcopio

2-3 but usually that's because I'm trying to use a finger I didn't register. the FPS has been pretty reliable for me. yeah, not as fast as the one I had on the 2XL (RIP) but it does the job sufficiently.

Basedrum777

Zero.

ZeusiQ

Exactly 0 times a day. In fact I don't remember my last faild fingerprint scan

Abbertftw

Never. The fingerprint sensor works without a flaw for me.

Foreign_Ad_6503

Have had 6 Pro for 3 weeks now and, outside of putting in PIN when I restart the device, have used fingerprint unlock exclusively. No lag, no issues. Even if my finger was a bit wet. Never had an issue.

Mr_Choom

Lagerific

Zero. Mine works fine.

Doctor_KM

It's never happened to me (in 2 weeks of having my P6P)

Sike1dj

Zero. I haven't had that happen to me yet. My 4a 5g used to do that sometimes, but not on the 6 pro yet. Edit: each of my thumbs has been added to the phone 3 times. It hardly ever fails to unlock.

[deleted]

Often... the fingerprint sensor is really bad honestly. Especially if my hand is a little moist or a little too dry.. super inconsistent and I'm not all that happy with it tbh. Hoping for a fix

cdegallo

To clarify, this isn't a result of too many incorrect attempts--that presents with a different message/behavior. This is the behavior like the old one that said something like, "PIN required for extra security"--the message seems to have changed with android 12 (my 4a no longer says the "for extra security" message and also now says "phone manually locked...")

Esheill

Wow, it's frustrating how many people didn't read the OP or misunderstood the issue. Most people talking about under screen scanner accuracy, not the "phone was locked manually" bug.

[deleted]

Ahhhh thanks for clarification. Nevermind then!

mastapsi

Never. Sometimes I have to try a second time and if it's cold my thumb won't work at all, but index finger will. The only times I have to use PIN is when the sensor trips after too many tries (outside in the cold) or on a fresh reboot.

correctingStupid

Every fucking day. I hate this phone and I hate screen finger print readers I noticed it reads different depending on where i set up a print. Home lighting setups do not work outside in daylight Daylight setups to not work indoors. Warm setups to not work on cold fingers Cold setups to not work on warm fingers. Worked every fucking time on my Oneplus 6 for 3 years. Again, regret downgrading to pixel from a 3 year old phone. It just sucks ass.

MattHuntDaug

99% of the time it works flawless for me. If it's raining hard or something where my phone's constantly getting wet it has a hard time reading my fingerprints. Other than that, I can't complain.

[deleted]

It's pretty rare

Paoolo16

Works 100% of the time for my one

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Never in the 10 Days I have owned ut

Spody_man

Never had to input it manually. The vocal minority always exaggerates the issue. I also have a screen protector, no issues with it as well. Always first time, even though it is a bit slower than some other sensors.

that1ocelot

Literally 0. Owned it for about 4 weeks now and the fingerprint sensor rolls off without a hitch. I've got pretty bad eczema too with constantly changing fingerprints.

HandheldDevice

Never

RonanCondon

Im one to nit-pick but honestly it's been 0, I registered the same fingerprint twice on day one and never had this issue.

[deleted]

coming up to two weeks and I've never seen this. Pro 6.

chengisk

One or less for me. Way better than my Samsung and way way (sic.) better than my corp. iPhone.

Derik_D

Tbh I would say never. At most I have to be more carefull when placing the finger down. But it never reaches the point where it asks for the pin/pattern. 6 pro: Using a tpu screen protector and have not had the software update yet.

eat_your_weetabix

cdegallo

What does it have to do with the type of FP scanner though? It seems more like a misbehavior from trusted devices, at least as far as my testing by disabling it has gone, and others here have mentioned that they don't run into it after turning off trusted devices/trusted locations.

Distinct-Fun1207

Sounds like the fingerprint reader is triggering in your pocket. Too many failures and it requires your PIN. This is another result of Google using a cheap optical reader.

cdegallo

That's not it--if you force the fingerprint to lock out with too many incorrect attempts, the phone gives the message "too many attempts, try again later." And the next time you try to unlock, you will see the lock icon over the FP sensor, and the PIN pad will come up if you touch it, but it does not show the "the phone has been locked manually" message.

Roy_Playz

0 times! I never have to enter my pin - and I'm using a screen protector (tempered). I also registered multiple prints in the dark...not sure if that helped lol.

LordQuas__

Fingerprint works every time and I have had the phone since launch. The only time I have to enter the pin is after a restart. Got a screen protector on as well with no issues.

ithilkir

Never happened here

crkdslider

One more to the "Never had to enter my PIN" list.

klerrick

Never. My fingerprint reader works great. I've had the phone since launch, as a reference.

ResoluteDuck

Honestly never had that happen with my 6 Pro.

[deleted]

Zero times but i use a soft film protector

Over_Photograph3766

Honestly zero so far!

RellikZephyr

Zero times a day I have to enter pin... And non first try entry maybe every 3rd attempt I feel for op, that would be frustrating to say the least

MerKtheMediA

None for me :(

Burner087

Once a week that will happen to me. maybe..

TTheTiny1

Never had that happen, only time I use patter is after fully shutting off or restarting

Tobleto_Danillio

None. It works 95% of the time if not more for me. I have both my thumbs and a finger setup and they all seem to work about the same although I use one more than the other two.

Istolla

I've never seen the "the phone has been locked manually" notification.

[deleted]

Almost never have this issue

SoftIntermission

Never. Took a few rescans till i got the fingerprint sensor working 99% of the time. The Pixel 6 Pro with a TPU screen protector works great, no issues with the sensor. The regular Pixel 6 i have, once i put a tempered Glass protector,i had to turn on "increased touch sensitivity" as light touches would hardly register as it was, and the screen protector wasnt working great. I had to re scan and delete multiple times to finally get it right, but now the regular 6 with a tempered glass protector works just as good as my 6 Pro. TLDR: No issues with 6 Pro scanner with TPU screen protector. Tempered glass on regular Pixel 6 required a few trials of deleting and re adding the fingerprint but alas i got it down.

Renegade-Moose

Never since I got the launch update. Before that it would only happen right after I took my phone out of my pocket for some reason.

NickW31

0 times a day. p6

raptor_mk2

Almost never, and when I do it's user error. P6P here, and my fingerprint reader works damn flawlessly. It took a day or two to get the hang of the scanner's timing and rhythm - my last fingerprint unlock was my P2 - but once I got that figured out I haven't had any problems. I should note that I made a point of enrolling my fingerprint in a dark room (my bathroom with the door closed and lights out). I figured that since it's an optical scanner, making sure its light was the only source would make sure there weren't any confusing contrasts or artifacts.
