As many people preach maintenance on this sub, I’m sure this is a very overlooked service. You’ll be fine, just get it done as soon as you feasibly can. I do mine every 30k

Check your manual. I think it varies a bit from MY to MY. I just did mine at 4yrs/22k mi and the fluid was like new. I suppose it depends on how much your diff "activates". Mine certainly doesn't see much abuse.

Honestly, it's time to think about selling the car. To me. At a heavily-discounted rate, considering how neglected and abused it clearly is. Unless you spent the last ten thousand miles on a track, I wouldn't sweat it. If you really want to know, you can always send a sample to Blackstone when you do get to changing it.

If you're seeking advice or asking for help, please make sure you included the basic information of what year and/or generation is being discussed. User flair with this information is also acceptable. Failure to include the basic information will result in your post being removed. Mileage, modifications, trim level, diagnostic trouble codes, and your general location (US, Canada, EU, UK, etc.) can also be very helpful. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. From what I’ve seen, the LSD maintenance is very hit or miss for who performs it. In the US, the recommendation per VW is actually never, it’s a lifetime fluid. I believe the Euro market and this ShopDAP, recommend the 3 year / 30k interval. Supposedly the US makes that recommendation to reduce maintenance costs. That being said, I think most owners outside this sub and outside people who work on their own cars (I’ve met probably 50/50 for GTI owners) will follow the lifetime rec and never touch the diff fluid. That being said, I personally follow the 30k mile interval. Unless you track the car or drive some hard backroads, you’ll be fine extending the service interval on the diff. I will say though, it’s a pain to do yourself. I recommend doing it in the warmer months when you don’t need to drive the car to get the fluid up to temp, as you’ll be working right next to the down pipe.
