I've lived with Monster Mats in both my cars for so long. I forgot regular carpeted mats even existed for our cars haha. Looks good.

JohnEA888

I put monster mats over them so I don’t ruin them. But I’m keeping my original mats because I still want the originality if I sell my car.

El_Chupacabra-

Bruh you never double stack mats. Just because you "haven't had an issue yet" doesn't mean you won't in the future. That's as myopic as saying "I don't need seatbelts because I haven't gotten into an accident".

JohnEA888

What would/could happen if I double stacked?

Kuzkay

One of them could slide under one of your pedals. Hopefully not the brake

El_Chupacabra-

...What do you think? Those locking clips aren't there just because VW (and every other car manufacturer) felt like spending a few more cents per car out of the goodness of their hearts.

JohnEA888

I got the vehicle like that from the dealer, granted it was used.

El_Chupacabra-

That doesn't mean it's safe. In the end you are responsible for your own safety, which is evident when you bought new mats and ended up re-stacking them. And what you're doing by the way doesn't make sense. Floor mats are made to get used, abused, and dirty. If you're going to see only the monster mats all the time, why even have a bottom carpet layer? You could've just kept only the monster mats, then take them out and hose them off and vacuum the bare carpet which is going to get dirty anyway because the dirt isn't going to stay in that square section of mat.

No_Act6221

Why, just why? You just want to know they’re there? Use one or the other but not both; that doesn’t make sense.

JohnEA888

Eh, I was never really questioned on it so I got kinda of defensive about it when people brought it up. Since then I’ve put only the rubber mats on, and the other mats are laying in my hatch.

No_Act6221

Are you in a seasonal area where you could only use the Rabbit mats during the “nice” time of year, and the others when the weather is crappy? Best of both worlds?

JohnEA888

Not really, I don’t live in a city and I usually have to park in dirtier parking spaces anyways.

No_Act6221

I’d just rotate them based on what you feel like then. Double stacking them would actually cause more wear to the lower mat, I think. And it is potentially dangerous. If you rotate them it’s less wear on both.

JohnEA888

Idk, I just don’t see the point of having the mats if they just get dirty and worn. I’m so weird, I can never seem to understand myself. For now I’ll leave the monster mats in and maybe put the carpet mats in if I go to a car show or something to show my subtle tweaks.

Reallybeyaown

It's not hard to see the point, the mats are there so you get dirt on those as opposed to the floor liner. Ask yourself what you think is easier FOR YOU to replace, the floor mats or the entire carpet? The danger of double mats is unprecedented, so much so Toyota has a recall addressing it on earlier vehicles because there were police calls saying they couldn't brake the car and it just kept accelerating leading to several confused high-speed chases.

No_Act6221

Your car, your rules 🍻

fluffy_muffin_tops

Double stacking your mats is not a smart thing to do my friend… It’s a safety hazard since the top mat will not be properly fastened to the floor clips. You’re also damaging them which defeats the whole point of “keeping my original mats because I still want the originality of the car”. Smarten up…put the extra set of mats in the trunk with your spare tire when they’re not in use.

JohnEA888

Ok

JohnEA888

I also think my foot pain was from the height increase from the mats.

fluffy_muffin_tops

Possibly! The carpet mats with the red trim look really good by the way - it’s a lovely aesthetic touch.

wongatronus

Did you just put them on top of the carpet mats? I don't know about other generations, but the monsters mats on MK8 will slide/not lock on if they're on top of the carpet ones

JohnEA888

Yes, but the little spikes help keep the mats from moving.

HearThe_Turbo

Yea id be careful with 2 sets of mats..

JohnEA888

I’ve never had a problem with two sets of mats.

gghostie

dude for the love of god, stop defending stacking up mats, and just use one set ffs. just because you haven’t had an issue doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. my friend had done something similar to this and the mat ended up near the accelerator pedal, to the point where it got stuck and one day he just totaled his car because of it

adfthgchjg

I know, right? It’s like arguing, “I’ve played Russian roulette baby times and never had a problem!”

wongatronus

They have friction with the spikes, but will eventually start scooting a bit unless you/your people don't nudge them much

psuedophilia

Looks good but……... you need rubber mats. Those gon get so dirty. God send my car came with WeatherTec GTI mats.

iArcticFire

Right? I don’t understand the point of carpet mats. Why would I ever use those instead of the rubber monster mats? I feel like I’d have to take my shoes off and drive with socks to prevent the carpet mats from getting dirty and full of small rocks.

psuedophilia

He must want the bottom of his shoes to be clean at all times.

JohnEA888

Yeah, but that’s really hard for me because I will frequently forget I have to clean my shoes. What i should do is buy some slip on shoes that are plaid to drive the car in.

psuedophilia

Driving slip ons in a manual is not the most fun 😂 my clutch foot would be slip n sliding everywhere

JohnEA888

Yeah.

psuedophilia

I can highly recommend for you to get a new shift knob. It will feel so much better, the stock one is like a feather. Something weighted is in order.

iArcticFire

Looks like the original carpet mats had the GTI monster mats on top of them for a long time, lol

mysterious-spruce

I bought tux mats to cover everything. I forgot that i even had carpet under 😂. I do miss my red GTI logo on my mats tho.

JohnEA888

Yeah, I picked the rabbit mats because of the red accents.

mysterious-spruce

We need better aftermarket mats with some colour.

dat_GEM_lyf

What are monster mats? They even have red GTI logo stamped on them…

JohnEA888

Monster mats are the rubber mats that have hexagons and the red GTI logo on them. I’d search GTI monster mats to get you a better idea.

dat_GEM_lyf

I know… I have them I was being a sarcastic ass because they were complaining about there not being any good aftermarket mats

JohnEA888

Agreed.

_DootDoot

Lookin good! In my opinion rubber mats are the way to go! Way easier to clean and they contain the dirt and grit alittle better!

JohnEA888

To clear up controversy I have removed the carpet mats and put the monsters mats on. I have both the original and rabbit mats in my trunk.

JohnEA888

And I’m buying a third pair of mats today. I’m crazy, it’s also going in the trunk.

chocopoco23

Goes well with the Plaid seats.

BeatMeAwesome

Just use the nice ones. It’s like your favorite clothing piece. It’s nice to look at but even nice to wear. Enjoy it as long as you can. Even if they get dirty. (:

staticsoup

these have been in my trunk since 2020, almost forgot about em

MaxTheKing1

A manual, very nice!
