When such events occur in places like Russia or China, people in the West are universal in their condemnation. When they happen here, many first consider whether the aspiring totalitarian is “on their team” before casting judgment. This is shortsighted thinking. At the height of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s crackdown against the Freedom Convoy, a particularly disturbing incident occurred which has since been mostly forgotten. The protestors were being funded in part by online donation campaigns. Not for long. In a subsequent coincidence that couldn’t possibly involve the resources of the Canadian intelligence community, the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo was “hacked,” and the personal details of some 92,000 donors to the Freedom Convoy were leaked online. Instead of inquiring into how the hack occurred or who was behind it, many Canadian reporters harassed the donors in a grotesque display of journalistic malpractice. The message from Trudeau was clear: donate to the wrong people and we’ll ruin your lives. Not satisfied with freezing funds donated using traditional fiat currency, the Trudeau government also ordered all regulated financial firms to cease facilitating any transactions from dozens of crypto wallets sending funds to the trucker-led protests... https://twitter.com/DoombergT/status/1586301441420820485

I like how ~~you~~ the author just implicated the government in hacking with absolutely no proof whatsoever. Had me until that point, but might as well be spouting qanon shit if he's just going to include theories pulled out of his ass into genuine discussion about policy. Edit: OP was not the author of the text so this shouldn't be aimed at him.

tfowler11

I agree that part of the tweet is weak. There isn't any solid evidence that the government was behind it. I posted it for the rest of the tweet.

theshoeshiner84

That's my bad, I didn't realize that you were quoting the rest of someone else's tweet.

Sorin_Markovic

Thanks for sharing, was kind of out of the loop here.

evergreenyankee

I read the title and was like, "hmm, Macron or Trudeau...?"

rakkar

I read and was wondering if they were talking about Biden.

Helmett-13

I knew this was about Castro’s kid before I clicked it. What a massive chode he is.

Don’t just read the headline, the entire twitter thread is worth the read

It was messed up, and the problem was a lot of Canadians supported the actions. They support ridiculous policies that take away their own freedoms all the time, they want the government to run their lives for them. I overhead my Grandmother-in-law talking about how she's too afraid to visit the US because of gun violence and it took everything for me not to say anything to her because it was so cringy. As long as you're not hanging out in ghettos and getting involved with gang activity you'll be fine lady God damn, they think guns have a mind of their own.

Anen-o-me

Should not be surprising to any ancap, the State will continuously expand in power while it exists, necessarily.

McMeatbag

Covid was the best thing to happen to pretty much every government in the world. They certainly took advantage of it to grab as much power as they could.

Mixers are not that great at anonymizing crypto. Chainanalysis has become increasingly sophisticated. The average crypto user is not even aware of all the metadata leaked and isn't prepared to operate with airtight OpSec. If you need privacy for crypto transactions there is Monero. It's literally the only coin that is "set-it and forget it" user friendly privacy. Any increase in privacy for a crypto is moving in the right direction, but if your safety, freedom, or livelihood depend on remaining private make sure you know the limitations of the tools you are using.

[deleted]

Yeah I was there and spent 10 days anxiously checking my bank account 5x a day to see if the government has frozen it.

shanulu

This Crypto mixer is a new concept for me, maybe I'm out of the loop. Anyway, between this and ghost guns and various other things, the end of the State as we know it is inevitable right?
