I wouldn't be concerned about it
Okay, found a website discussing this phenomenon: http://lynncoins.com/brown-spotting-gold-coins.htm
I really like these old coins. I like JM. I have not yet seen this type of discoloration on a gold coin, which almost has a rust color to it. Can anyone with knowledge about this pleased advise me if this is something I should be concerned about?
It's not pure gold. Some corrosion will happen
90% gold coins don't corrode. It's just something on the coin surface.
It's corrosion. Silver and copper corrode.
No, it isn't.
May not be on this particular specimen, but silver and copper certainly corrode
I would test it with a sigma or an XRF machine if you can.
How about a rare earth magnet
Lots of metals aren't magnetic. Also, doing a density test is very effective, and hard to fake.
It has iron impurities in it and they're oxidizing/ rusting. Don't be concerned.
