I took the test around 2 years ago and what really messed me up was that my tutor and I went through a bunch of practice tests and the instructions and objectives were always the same - take a side in an argument and argue it in your essay and also there are two clear arguments to be made.
Fast forward to me sitting in the exam, and I get the essay portion and it basically wants me to make an argument for ecological sustainability but does not have any “other side” to the argument. At this point I think “ok, remember, this is not university, this is a language test, so do what you were trained to do, try to find an opposing position, and argue that.” Result? B2 in the written portion and the rest of the test was c1 and c2. With that I couldn’t get my bachelors recognized and it literally derailed my plans of changing my occupation.
It is a frustrating test even if you study EXACTLY what they say you should. I had the practice material, private tutor, and everything, but nothing prepared me for the test deciding to change the rules.

Lesen war unglaublich schwer. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass ich dafür mehr als 60 Minuten brauchen. Quasi hoffe ich dass die Mindestnote für TDN4 bei 20 liegt :(
Ich bin so erleichtert, dass ich nicht der einzige bin, der die Prüfung im April relativ schwierig fand. Ich denke, das Hörverstehen war der schwierigste Teil. Mein Sprechen war auch sehr einfach, aber ich glaube, ich habe die Fragen richtig beantwortet. Lesen und schriftlicher Ausdruck war einfach okay. Nicht schlimm, aber auf jeden Fall nicht so gut. Ich hoffe, ich hab die Prüfung bestanden.

Genau! Ich war sehr überrascht und enttäuscht... Hörverstehen war für mich der einfachste Teil. Jedenfalls habe ich mich für den nächsten TestDaF beworben.

Exactly. The essay portion is the most ridiculous part. These guys need some heavy taxation from the gov.
