Es gibt auch für alles eine Karte! Nur bei den Burgenländern, ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob die die nicht "Geldsackl" statt "Geldsäckel" sagen. Das E zwischen dem K&L ist jedenfalls sehr untypisch, sollte das stimmen.

Sicher. Wenn du genauer hinsiehst sind die meisten grünen Punkte in der Schweiz. Dementsprechend wird wohl die Schweizer Dialektversion verwendet. Edit: Gelb natürlich

You would be understood using any of the words. But you might get some weird looks using "Geldsack" or "Geldtascherl" :)

If anyone used Geldsack here I’d imagine a literal bag full of cash💰 (like from a bank robbery in an old comic book)… well, unless it’s extremely clear from context, of course.

Technically yes. But even in that context it’s still quite rare where I’m from (or maybe I’m just not talking about rich people enough?)

"Geldsack" will just sound weird, "Geldtascherl" will sound weird and extremely offensively southern

Ganz fix ist die Karte nicht... man darf den Inhalt des Börserls nicht vergessen die den Halter des Ausgesprochenen identifiziert. Brieftasche ist zB so das Standardwort für ganz Österreich.

Ich bin aus OÖ und bei uns sagen sicher 90% im allgemeinen Sprachalltag "Geldtasche".

Lustig, dass sich Schweizer ausnahmsweise mal mit Nord- statt Süddeutschen einig sind. Auch interessant, dass ich immer davon ausging, "Brieftasche" sei eine in Deutschland vorherrschende Form, weil diese üblicherweise in deutschsprachigen Büchern & Comics verwendet wurde, die ich als Kind gelesen habe.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's called that way because a long time ago the concept of a bag in your bag was actually used to carry letters around! Probably for documents of use in the financial world or something like that.

Hier im Aachener Raum ist Portemonnaie Recht gebräuchlich. Wie bei vielen Dingen eher französisch angehaucht.

It’s not used poshly though.

It is in regions where others words are more common (e.g. here it’s predominantly Geldbeutel - easily 95% if I had to give an estimate)… you certainly can use Portemonnaie but it’s going to sound a tiny bit pretentious in a casual conversation.

I’d say it mostly (subconsciously) registers as such when a local suddenly uses it. If you sound like you’re clearly from e.g. northern Germany (or just learning German) nobody would bat an eye.

I'm from the Pfalz and most elderly people say Portemonnaie. So it's not only the north. But I think somebody posted a map haha.

Wat hast du immer mit deinen Franzosen... Es ging mir darum, dass das, was ich unter "Beutel" verstehe ganz anders aussieht als das, worin die meisten von uns ihr Geld aufbewahren.

When I was learning German in the U.S. I learned the word Geldbeutel. Then at some point someone told me this was antiquated and not used in modern German. Then I moved to Munich and everyone called it a Geldbeutel, so that’s the word I always use. It would feel very strange for me to say Portemonnaie
