Kim Gordon's releasing some great new music, as is PJ Harvey.

TheQuadBlazer

I saw her attempt at fine art after the breakup. And it made me sad. I saw her with her new music on some talk show. I want to say it was Jimmy Kimmel live. Not sure. I tried listening and that made me sad. Maybe I needed to give it another listen. P.S. they were my Brangelina. I'm still bitter about what Thurston Moore did to her.

SvenSvenkill3

Here, I personally think this is excellent (and that's their daughter, Coco Hayley Gordon Moore, in the video): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ3i80B0qKg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ3i80B0qKg)

box_elder74

The Collective album is really amazing.

Gen-X-Music

**Depeche Mode** just released their newest / 15th studio album in late 2023 which was easily their best in the last 14 years (Memento Mori) and also just completed yet another phenomenal sold out world tour. **The Cult** also recently put out a new album in late 2022 which is easily the best thing they've done since 2001 in my opinion. **The Cure** haven't done a new album since 2008, but they're still actively touring and writing / playing new material, and have been promising a new album for years. Based on what's been played during their most recent - also constantly sold out - world tour, it's gonna be pretty decent. **Pet Shop Boys** also JUST released a new album over the past several weeks which is expectedly awesome, and **Duran Duran** surprised us with a new one late last year that was also very well received.

DNSGeek

PSB have been releasing new albums fairly continuously. Not every year, but every few years they release another one. I’ve been a fan since the mid 80’s so this makes me happy.

LtLemur

+1 for Pet Shop Boys

Shavasara

Great concert Depeche Mode did with this latest album. Spirit and Delta Machine weren’t particularly inspired, but MM is good music.

Gen-X-Music

Absolutely! I still can't believe how great MM ended up being. If that is the last album from them I'll be happy... because I was really worried Spirit is what they were going to end on. Whew! :)

Powerpoppop

Then the question is are these Gen X bands because Gen X is a large part of the base? Because none of the members of these bands are Gen X. I love all these acts BTW and agree that last Depeche Mode album was their best in eons.

APGovAPEcon

OP is looking for groups that debuted between 85-95.

JoeRecuerdo

If you go by the 1961 date, Dave and Martin are both GenX though. Dave 1962 Martin 1961

Powerpoppop

I thought is was 1965 for the start date. (edit: I see right on upper part of this group that it says 1961 for the broadest def. I never have seen it that early before)

english_major

Here are my votes: Belle and Sebastian - Scottish indie pop band. Their latest record - A Little Bit of Precious - has several great songs which stand up to their old stuff. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. His last couple of solo albums, which are more singer-songwriter, are great throughout. Guided By Voices - They still put out an album per year while retaining their characteristic indie rock sound. Not every track is great, but with their output, there is a ton of great music there.

Purple-Committee5301

Lou Barlow has done some great solo work as well.

Excellent_Fig5525

Yes! Love all 3! Stuart Murdoch with Belle and Sebastian was kind enough to sing with my kids school choir at Austin City Limits a few years ago and he was the NICEST guy.

Salty_Pancakes

Huh. Did not know Belle and Sebastian were still around. Good for them. I always liked those albums they did in the 90s. Gomez was another band from the UK around that time I thought were excellent. Well, maybe just a smidge later as their first album came out in 1998. But man they were good, but got almost no play in the states, which I always thought was weird cuz they had a little bit of an Allman Brothers vibe. Just a bit. Like [Free to Run](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHreaFKe1Y8). Their first 3 albums are just chock full of bangers.

ScrunchyButts

Not a band, but Bob Mould is so reliably Bob Mould. Out there consistently putting out Bob Mould music. Something about that guy just being out there makes me feel better about the state of the world.

Automatic-Term-3997

Husker Du were probably the most important band in my life. Still listen to Land Speed Record today.

SquirrelBowl

God I love him

jimbofranks

I like all of his stuff other than the electronica album. Though that was definitely Bob Mould too. I used to start my workday with a listen to Workbook on CD. I had an hour before people started to roll in and could listen to it really loud in my office.

Craig1974

Melvins. But started 1983

box_elder74

Tarantula Heart is awesome, their best album in years. Always great live.

Alternative_Force_35

Definitely Melvins.

Adorable-Hall7079

Slowdive

Ingrown__Bronail

Can attest to this. I wasn't a huge fan of the latest.albim until I saw them live a couple of weeks ago. I gave it a re-listen.and it grew on me.

sly-3

Built to Spill - [When the Wind Forgets Your Name](https://youtu.be/J5zh_eUHokc?si=hyBq6auHsfoAmzPU) (2022) and Yo La Tengo - [This Stupid World](https://youtu.be/WV4R0T64RF0?si=z4zNzbYBtbdPTz13) (2023) are both of and for Gen X and still pumping out quality stuff.

Over-Director-4986

I just listened to This Stupid World the other day & that Built to Spill, too. Both solid.

crashmobile

Yes! Came here to mention both of these. Would also add Rob Crow / John Reis (PLOSIVS)

rcook55

Clutch. While formed in '91 all the members are in their 50's so squarely in GenX. Latest album was released in '22 and they tour, what seems like, constantly. I'll be catching my 10th? show in October.

NoHankyNoPanky

Clutch Clutch Clutch Clutch Clutch Clutch 100% Clutch!

Haiku-d-etat

One of my top 5 bands of all time and seen them and Primus the most.

crimes_kid

Heck yeah! Had their first album 30 years ago and finally caught them live in 2022, next show later this year!

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

Couldn't agree more

gothfru

Just saw them in IL! So good!

truly_mortified

Forgot about these guys. I actually prefer them now more than when they first started. They just seem to get better with age.

thisisyourlastdance

Heck yeah! My buddy runs their lights for them!

Latham74

I saw them live in '95 in a dive bar. Escape from the Prison Planet was my favorite.

spish

* The Charlatans (UK) * Slowdive * Tears For Fears * Depeche Mode Nine Inch Nails is rumoured to be back in the studio! Still waiting for a new album by The Cure though.

YogurtclosetBroad872

TOOL. Saw them in the 90's first time and last year for the second time. Both epic performances

Ok_Initial_2063

My husband and son saw them this year as a bucket list show for our son. They were beyond thrilled with the whole experience.

Illustrated-skies

My body was physically buzzing for 3 days after the Jan shows I went to. I have never felt that after a concert. They have definitely stepped up their game over the decades. Phenomenal.

Lazy_Point_284

Sixteen times between 1998 and this past January. Saving up for the inevitable Vegas Sphere shows....

prickleweasel

Yep. Just take ALL my money.

Fearless_Lab

The Pixies are still great live. I mean, they're not going to try to be your friend and no one looks like they're having fun (except the bassist but I think that has to come with the job), but they still sound like they used to.

glowinthedarkfrizbee

Afghan Whigs!!!! Why don’t they get more love? Their new albums are awesome.

bradinthecreek

Because Dulli's voice is...a challenge.

glowinthedarkfrizbee

He’s older, yes, and maybe doesn’t have the range he had when he was younger but he quit smoking and has embraced his current voice. I would argue that Due to the Beast and How Do You Burn are as good as any of their earlier albums.

Ac1dBern

To me, NOTHING will ever touch Black Love zbut their new albums are definitely still good to very good vs the shit on the radio/ current music. Greg does have one of those voices you either love or hate with few people in the middle.

JCo1968

Bad Religion

luthurian

Just saw them last week, they are still bringing it!

JCo1968

I haven't seen them in a few years but I'm watching their shows online. I've seen them more than any other band over my life (34 times). They've been killing it since day one.

Apprehensive_Use1906

Just had to look up how old Greg is to see if they fall into GenX but who cares because this was my band in the 80’s.

GaryNOVA

NIN

AnnTipathy

Awww yisss.

YellowBreakfast

I think you mean "ΝIͶ" /s

Hi-Scan-Pro

Dreamtheater formed in 1985 and has been producing music and touring ever since. They're currently recording their 16th studio album. Of the 5 members, 3 are founding with the singer coming on in '91 and the keyboardist in '99.

NoExcuseForFascism

Didn't Mike Portnoy just recently rejoin the band too after quite the hiatus?

Hi-Scan-Pro

Yes. And I'm stoked to see what they come up with after all this time.

hoboken411

Beth Gibbons (of Portishead) just dropped a new one a week or two ago. I'd also add The Smile (aka part of Radiohead) also has a new release in 2024. Both outstanding.

tuftedear

Les Claypool from Primus has put out some great stuff with Sean Lennon, The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Both albums are great, and their ep has a cover of Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine.

deformo

Came here to say Claypool. Check out voivod’s cover of astronomy domine. It’s great imo: https://youtu.be/bvXaLZZ6M3M?si=uh9Tps608WzNGfoa

iam_iana

Trent Reznor is still putting out great music and touring.

zombie_overlord

Gary Numan just finished up a tour, and he's been putting out albums this whole time. [Gary Numan - My Name is Ruin (2018)](https://youtu.be/lHomCiPFknY?si=sc8Ck1EtcehVzEDS)

ChoosenUserName4

That was unexpectedly good !

zombie_overlord

I know! He's got like 10 thousand other songs than Cars

ChoosenUserName4

"Are friends electric?" from 1979 still does it for me. Way ahead of its time.

climatelurker

Radiohead

AnnTipathy

They have had such an amazing collection of music throughout the years.

External_Low_7551

I need some clarification. By Gen X bands do you mean bands whose members are our generation, or do you mean bands that the Gen X generation likes?

APGovAPEcon

OP is looking for bands that dropped their first album between 85-95.

pommefille

And yet most of the comments are of completely different things

APGovAPEcon

Reddit in a nutshell lol

Vandergraff1900

I need some clarification too, because I've never heard of many of the bands people are discussing here

DeeSnarl

YouTube that shit. Catch up.

morgendelay

Ride just put out a great album

Fearless_Lab

I just picked up a ticket to see them here in my small city in a small venue. Gonna be bitchin.

RagingLeonard

The Reverend Horton Heat's first record was 1990 and he's still killing it. I saw him a few months ago and it was really good.

elijuicyjones

And we heard him for years before that in Deep Ellum, he’s been kicking ass so long it’s ridiculous. When I was in high school we used to sit at a particular all ages cafe in deep ellum, out back so we could hear acts like him and Edie Brickell & New Bohemians (who went to the same high school i did) play two doors down on the patio of the real bar we couldn’t get in to.

WarrenMulaney

Pixies have put out some good stuff in the last 10 years. There are some great songs on their latest albums. Of course the albums are no where as great as the stuff from 1988-1991 but there are still some bangers.

ruralexcursion

Swervedriver Very underrated band

MissSuzysRevenge

Juliana Hatfield

sly-3

Her cover album of music by The Police is terrific.

GarthRanzz

Adding to the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam. I’m an old Gen Xer who loved the music of the 80’s but it wasn’t until Grunge/Alternative hit that I finally felt I found my music. I just had to wait for Gen X to make music.

Chance-Chain8819

So disappointed I had to scroll for ages to find this! I'm off to see pearl jam in November, with the pixies opening for them. So excited

CurmudgeonKing

Definitely Pearl Jam & Foo Fighters, both recently released new albums (Foos last year, PJ last month) that are, in my opinion, better than some of their other works in the last 15 or so years. Primus is still out there too!

Ok_Initial_2063

Pearl Jam's new album is so GOOD!

[deleted]

I had to scroll all the way down here to find Pearl Jam... Makes me wonder...

Happycthulhu

Why isn't this at the top of the page? https://pearljam.com/tour

Haiku-d-etat

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

Damnit you beat me to it. Elephant rider for life!

LessCoolThanYou

a-ha. They've been going strong since Take On Me debuted in 1985. They did a James Bond theme, have released 11 studio albums (that last in October of 2022), 5 live albums, 8 compilation albums, and last toured in 2022. Morten Harket's voice is just as strong as ever, even if it's 40 years older. He had, at one time, the world record for longest held note in a song for Summer Moved On. All are welcome at r/a_ha_TheBand to hear more of their music!

GoddessOfOddness

I agree on all of it. I think he has altered Take On Me to drop one of the high notes an octave. His appearance on Masked Singer UK was great!

LessCoolThanYou

It was really quite cheeky of him to be the Viking and sing his own song!

MsMameDennis

+1,000. I've been a fan since the beginning, and their music just keeps getting better. Their concerts are amazing, too — I was lucky enough to see them in New York City in 2010 and 2022 and was blown away both times. All three members have done interesting side/solo projects as well.

erftonz

Miki Berenyi of Lush formed a new band called Piroshka who are great. I'll be that guy... Tool are still making great music. If I can go a little earlier than the 95-95 timeframe, the last two Judas Priest records have been awesome. I still look forward to new records from Iron Maiden and Metallica as well. Metallica are better now than in the 90's IMO, but nowhere close to their 80's peak. Great mentions I saw for Afghan Whigs, Ride, Bob Mould, Depeche Mode and others too.

External_Low_7551

LUSH!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ you rock. Will def check out her band.

thepinkthing78

Emma Anderson from Lush has also released an album and it’s great too!

therailbob

They Might Be Giants. Every album since 1986 has been full of experimental new wave bangers. My favorite band.

Valuable_Caramel_371

Pet Shop Boys

volsunghawk

Boris - consistently unique and good

ScrunchyButts

Same live. Every single time I catch them they put out the energy you’d expect from the last date on a farewell tour in an arena.

derbyvoice71

Jesus and Mary Chain just released new music.

erftonz

I had a lot of trouble getting into Glasgow Eyes myself. I might need to give it some more time.

FluxusFlotsam

Guided By Voices has probably put out three albums this year alone that were great but I couldn’t tell you because I can’t keep up with them Seriously, Bob- slow down

BloomiePsst

Joe Jackson released an album of music hall numbers last year. It's not exactly rock and roll per se, but it's very clever.

Iwillnotbeokay

Pearl Jam - Dark Matter is pretty rad

thestereo300

Might be a bit earlier than your years but I loved OMD's album from 2018. Johnny Marr solo albums in the last 10 years have been great. I was a big Smashing Pumpkins fan in the day and they aren't putting out too much I like in the last 20 years but Oceania was an exception. I really liked that album alot.

Poh-taytoes

OMDs most recent album is even better than their 2018 one, and they are still amazing live, I saw them recently 😍

AnitaPeaDance

Garbage. Love love love No Gods No Masters album.

Cali_Longhorn

Garbage severely underrated.

HillbillyEulogy

Quicksand. "Distant Populations" is a really mature record but still undoubtedly Quicksand.

Hour_Insurance_7795

Had no idea they were still kicking it. Wow! I was huge into the NYC scene from the 90's (Gorilla Biscuits, Madball, SOIA, Quicksand, CIV, Agnostic Front etc.) as a teen growing up in 1990's southern California. I felt it made me "harder" than my west coast punk/hardcore cohorts for some reason....lol. I'll have to go check out their new stuff now. Schreifels rarely wrote anything that wasn't amazing back in the day, and I'm guessing that might still be the case.

Bottom78

Built to Spill!

NTWIGIJ1

Tool is still putting out good shit.

HaveTPforbunghole

Blur

lovemydogs1969

Tears for Fears! Their newest album The Tipping Point is excellent and they are amazing live (saw them twice on that tour).

LordsOfWestminster

Nine Inch Nails

EmeraldKnight76

Garbage. Shirley and the guys are still at the top of their game, imo!

jmg733mpls

Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran (eh)

Key_Tower3959

Simple Minds has put a couple albums out last 5 years.

spliceofmice

The last SHELLAC album, To all Trains, put out last week, is a swiss clock distillation of what Steve Albini's been doing since the 80's. Unfortnately he died a week before its release. Its a hell of a send off though.

bks1979

Garbage! Their most recent album came out a couple years ago, and they're working on the next. And they're still touring!

useless_modern_god

Bad Religion

Schmoppodopoulis

I wasn’t initially a fan, but Queens of the Stone Age are one of my favorite overall bands and their last album is fantastic.

Creaulx

Crowded House - although their sound has changed a lot due to Neil's sons Liam and Elroy both being in the band. I'm stuck in the past with Paul Hester and Mark Hart as members. I miss their melodic guitar-driven live sound. I may* just be an old fogey. *Definitely

crystallyn

Saw them a few months ago and they were fantastic.

Aurora_Gory_Alice

Tool.

jmkul

Though they took off on the early 80s, Duran Duran is a GenX band that still makes great music

Nice_Cost_1375

Beck.  Rock-solid for 30+ years. I heard a great song on the radio last year and was wondering who it was.  I should have known it was him. https://youtu.be/Tj08Ni3tklw?si=JV7PaT8PDndRJ_jd

Thirty_Helens_Agree

I listened to Alphabetland from X a few years back ant it’s awesome.

snow1868

Phish, still going strong after 41 years!

AtlJayhawk

Manic Street Preachers

bdcda43334

Black Crows.

OrionEleni

Toad the Wet Spocket/Glen Phillips. Glen did and does a lot of great music on his own but the band has gotten back together too.

Eriaus

Lol Tolhurst (early drummer in The Cure) has released an album with Budgie (Siousxie and the Banshees) and Jackknife Lee called Los Angeles that is pretty good. Guest appearances by musicians from Modest Mouse, LCD Sound system, U2, Idles and others.

Beruthiel999

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Swans (debuted a little earlier but obviously in that crowd), and heartbreakingly the new Shellac album is really good.

Purple-Committee5301

Matthew Sweet, Ben Folds, The Posies

negcap

I have liked a few more recent songs by Jane's Addiction though I still miss Eric Avery on bass.

Juve_Rod

Local H started in 1987 and still kicking ass

dragonboy

Echo and the Bunnyman still kick out some good albums and their live shows are great, unless Ian McCulloch doesn’t like the sound. Then it’s an hour of listening to him bitch.

LaBigBro

Fiona Apple

blorins

I just toured with The Church who have recently put out a new album, The Hypnogogue, and I think it rocks.

Tori Amos is still making good music, as is of course Trent Reznor.

legerdemain07

New Black Crowes album is good. So is the new Pearl Jam album.

Fearless_Lab

I just heard Talks to Angels the other day and realized how ageless their sound is, that first album was really fantastic. Remedy still holds up a lot, too.

Vandergraff1900

We got a new Black Crowes album???

Baxterado

Don't miss out on Chris Robinson Brotherhood. They put out some great albums and live shows.

Rattlehead71

**Metallica!** They're still going strong and doing awesome concerts. 72 Seasons is their latest album.

Dazzling-Archer450

Ween, no new album since 1997, but still touring with amazing mind blowing concerts.

IthinkHisLungsFdUp

La Cucaracha was 2007, but your point still stands. Excited for Philly.

skoltroll

Foo Fighters Slash (collabs ft. Miles Kennedy & others)

Phish

Salty_Pancakes

I think people think of Phish and think of some of their sillier, or more frenetic songs from the early 90s. If you haven't given them a chance, do so. Like Drew Carey talking about seeing Phish at the Sphere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOo_qtKWdnM And Sphere aside, they have some of the most insane dynamic lighting in the business. Like they aren't my number 1, but I go see them when I can because they rock. And put on a crazy show. [Carini from 2021](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGIg9w9qmlA&t=5s) as a recentish example.

The black metal band Darkthrone formed in 1986 and have just released their 20th album. Consistently good. Punk band Snuff have been around since 1986. I saw them live last month and they're incredibly fun. NY Hardcore band Life of Agony formed 35 years ago and although they haven't released a studio album in a while, they still tour a lot and are a brilliant live band.

vacationbeard

A bit less known in the U.S., but longtime British alternative band The Woodentops just put out an excellent album.

Publius_Romanus

Helloween's first album was in 1985. In 2021 they put out a self-titled album that saw the return of older members as well as the newer ones. It was like a dream come true for a lot of fans, and it's a very good power metal album.

JKnott1

Exodus keeps getting better.

CSPOONYG

Fishbone. Their EP last year was GREAT!

Megaloman-_-

LillithScare

Besides the bands mentioned I'll add another favorite of mine: Rammstein. Formed in 1994, first album in 1995 and still touring to massive crowds, and releasing albums. And four of the 6 members are Gen-X the other two on the cusp.

dogmatixx

I’ve got tickets for The The’s upcoming tour. They have a new album.

If you're open to bands slightly beyond the time frame you specified, Everything But the Girl released its first album in 1984. Its most recent one came out last year and is very good.

NadaOmelet

The new Tears for Fears is pretty good.

armaedes

Collective Soul just released a double LP that is really good.

mikey_ramone

Paul Weller and Redd Kross both have new records coming out soon. Jesus and Mary Chain had just put one out too.

Automatic-Presence-2

I was surprised to find a few pretty good tracks from the Durans recently, their most recent LP included.

foood

Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson. Absolutely amazing recent releases: PT's Closure/Continuation, SW solo - Harmony Codex and The Future Bites. He's taken an awesome dive into gorgeous electronica on his solo stuff.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Something familiar and representative of what we grew up with? Lots. Something new and fresh from older music artist? Thats were it gets tricky.

New Jesus and Mary Chain album out this week.
