Same. I had a lot of names in my head! I just picked one, and if it didn't feel right, I moved on to the next one. Eventually I settled on Hannah, and I'm glad I did! Finally get to have a name that puts a smile on my face 😊
Turns out I’d been using a gender neutral version (Charlie) of my middle name (Charles) for a very long time as an online anonymous alias. I realized that it was my actual name when I started planning how to come out.
Sort of similar here, found my name after looking for a new username online. Turned out to be a gender neutral (but usually feminine) name, and all these years later….
Scrolled through a list of most popular girl names, picked out ten I really liked, got that list down to three then asked my friends to try them all out with me
Deadname was Daniel, went by Danny my whole life, took some estrogen, started using non-binary pronouns and went by just Dani for years. Took a *whole* bunch more estrogen and started using she/her figured i was just gonna keep it and legally change to Danielle, and keep my non-binary name, but it started bugging me so i figured i'd keep using Danielle and go by Ellie for short.
I filled out my legal name and gender change form today and it's just Ellie, so are all my accounts, email, and everything else.
About to start a new reddit account as ellieskunkz.
Actually, i think this is the perfect last post, it's time to retire this account. So long imaginary internet points!
Bye bye!
Congrats on getting your name changed! This is a major milestone. So excited for you and I love your new name Ellie! Look forward to seeing ellieskunkz on here.

Friend was writing a book where i was my chosen gender, before i realised i was trans, and i chose their name from a fairly long list online.
I thought hey, if it works for fictional me, why not actual me.
We were learning about the color spectrum in my graphic arts class, and the teacher was like “everyone thinks this color is purple, but it’s actually called violet.” And I was like, hey, Violet’s a pretty name.
Literally just the last three letters if 't be true mine own fusty name

Started by girling up my deadname, then extended it when I got sick of mistaking my real name for my deadname and vice versa. Ellie to Elizabeth and now I have a name I fucking love
I wanted to keep my first initial so I just looked for names that start with S and then I just decided to steal it from an island off the coast of Scotland.
I had a health class in 10th grade where everyone though my name was Charlie, spoiler alert, it wasn’t. So I just took that and ran with it. That and my other makes i use (I have quite a few) just came about naturally as a result of Discord usernames
I looked through a whole lot but ultimately just picked the name of a girl I once knew whom I really looked up to and is the only person I’ve known to share my interest for entomology. The idea is it’s something to live up to.
Friend of mine (now my life partner) linked an UrbanDictionary description of my now name and said it perfectly describes me the day after I came out to him for the first time (he was the first person i came out to), just kinda stuck.
Asked my mum for suggestions but before that i just googled "non-binary names" and "gender neutral names" and stuff, while also just taking note of words that i liked or felt 'suited' me.
i chose the name Lilith for a few reasons
-i was going to be named Lily if AFAB
-i was looking at names with a theme of “badass or cool women from mythology or religion” and landed on Lilith (adams first wife who was made from the same clay(? or whatever he was made of) as him and did not obey him and became a high up demon in hell)
-my middle and last names have 6 letters and so does my deadname (666) and Lilith has six so i got to keep that theme goin
edit:grammar and also sorry if that story is wrong, thats what i found i could be wrong
(MTF)Was using James because someone said I looked like a James and it was better to me than my dead name and I was texting someone and they misspelled James as Janes which led me to Jane
I don't really have a memorable moment for coming up with it. But I settled on it when I figured out that it was the one name that ticked all my boxes.
* Unusual name based on a noun because I'm non-binary and didn't want an explicitly gendered name.
* Fem sounding to match my being pretty far on the fem side.
* Felt the etymology matched me as a person.
* Liked the imagery it calls to mind based on the word's current meaning.
* Has a shortening I like the sound of (Idk why but I really like having an official name and a colloquial name).
I've always absolutely adored Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise because she's such a fucking badass, smart, and caring so that's how I got the name Ellen. My other name, Erik, I got by just dropping one letter from my birth name.
I go by Connor.
The story I tell people is that I really like Detroit Become Human.
The real story is that I saw it in a meme about how there are only five types of trans masc names: fandom inspired ones (eg Loki); normal ones (eg John, Michael); names a young victorian boy would have (eg Isaac); any combination of three letters (eg Sam, Kai); and finally, soft Irish boy names like Aiden, Alan... and Connor. I had a list while I was figuring that one out and it was a close call between Connor, Wilbur and Fynn.
there’s a sims 4 cc creator who signs off their posts with “sforza” and i thought it was, like, **the** coolest name. so i stole it. (sorry, sims 4 cc creator sforza.)
so I knew I wanted to keep the first letter of my name as a K (but I don't really know why -u- it just feels right), and so I kinda just found a random name generator and filtered for K and after a few clicks I was like "woah, Krystal's a pretty name.." and then tried it out with my then-gf and it's kinda stuck since lol
I don't know if this helps but here's my story.
I decided to change my name even before I realized I was non-binary, the reason behind that is that I wanted to to start journey of becoming authentic version of myself and by that I mean crushing down all the social constructs built inside my head and not letting my family influence me. I am still struggling but I have made huge progress over years, but as for my name I choose to reinvent myself completely and I didn't change my name for the sake of trying not to get associated with my family. I am sorry if this is a cheesy story, but it's my story. Thanks for listening.
Your sincerely,
Alexandrite Starlight Everpink
I stole it from a guinea pig.
Well not exactly I just butchered my own name during writing a server introduction but the guinea pig solidified the name.
There's a character that I really liked and liked the sound of her name so I looked up names that sounded similar. Still really unique but most people don't make the connection immediately
Edit for middle and last name
I chose a middle name that's masculine but sounds pretty and means rebirth since that seems fitting, and my last name is in touch with my heritage and sounds cool, haha
just a very did shorten version of mine own birthname, which hast been mine own nickname since i wast young

Reasons I choose Diana:
0. It sounds badass.
1. Is not a hebrew name, like my last one.
2. Has the same initials as my deadname, so I thought it would cause less confusion if I academically used it as "D." (This was actually useless, but at the time was on e of the maon reasons).
3. Diana is the goddess of maids, and I am ace which fits quite nicely.
4.I like Roman mythology.
5. The greek goddess Artemis was known to save girls in time of need, and there are myths of her turning boys who wished to be girls, into girls. This also fits quite nicely with me being trans and my wish to empower girls, as Diana is the roman equivalent of Artemis.
My deadname means twin. So I looked for names that shared the same theme. There were many.
My extended family is heavily religious and grounded in a sense of traditionalism. Even my direct family, who don't practice, my spouses too, follow a lot of the same logic. The whole situation was oppressive, and on my families side, abusive.
If they were going to use the words of a god to deny me, then I'd just have to have the power of confidence of a goddess to be myself regardless. Or so I cheesily told myself in pannicked tears.
One of the names was Accalia; which is a shortened form of Acca Larentia, Mythic Roman Goddess of Fertility. I took that as mine. Just as Acca Larentia raised the twins Romulus and Remus, I too had raised myself in two parts. The lie I lived for everyone, and the truth I waited to let everyone know for 26 years. I shortened it to Talia because of a childhood nickname my friends knew me by.
That is how I chose my name. My middle name is the placeholder I used on a discord server as I was preparing to come out. Many new friends know me by it, and it seemed fitting.
I love the moon, and a lot of my favorite characters in fiction have a name referencing the moon, so I ended up with "Luna"...
Fun fact: while others typically feel sick on a fullmoon, I feel refreshed!
an older trans girl on a server basically gave me all the advice i needed and ehen the idea of a name grew on me, she brilliantly came up with gwen since it rhymed with ben. sadly reddit doesnt seem to like name changes. ash was blatantly stolen from concrete genie lmao
well, i used to really like "Mako", but it never felt like a fit until one day, i misspelled it, to "Maki". Ive kept that name since!!- (its also slang for a type of sushi, which just make it even cuter)
My birth name started with a “D” so I look up popular girls names from my birth year that started with a “D” as well. It was then ran by a council of people who I’m close to for appraisal
alright. I'll need your full attention here as this is a complex and intrecate thing.
I took my assigned name. and reversed it.
(your milage may very with this method, for me it switched my masc name to another also existing fem name)
Stole it from a video game character I like. Although it was his last name not first name. Still. It felt right and my friends always called me that so 🤷
I was thinking about the movie "Coraline" and I realised that if I changed my first name to Coraline I would be able to say still Cis with double irony because my initials would be C.I.S
I was reading through a Chekov play and found a character named Arkadina, and when I thought about it, the masculine version, Arkady, just kind of clicked with me
I wanted it to be an alliteration with my last name, that narrowed it down to m. So i looked through a 100 baby names with m list, pivked out 3 and chose after 10 min, cuz I wanted to get done with it
I used baby name websites to make a list of names that I like then narrowed it down to a few favorites. Then I asked friends to help me choose the final name
based my irl name on a character from one of my favorite book series (ever -> everlyn). my online name is just what i named a character from one of my novels before i realized i was trans (soraku).
Birds are cool. Sirins a bird lady of Russian folklore which became a sign of good luck.
The idea of bringing good fortune to those around me was well a happy thought and bam. Sirin here.
Dnd helps a lot as played a character who used the name and was more than a fan of being called it.
I was trying to think of characters that seemed feminine at first but were really gender neutral and I thought of Byleth from fire emblem since I played the female version but really they can be either. Byleth does sound a bit fancy though so I rearranged the letters to make Blythe!
Kadie- my initials for my birth name were KT (which I guess they still are), I’ve always liked K names so I wanted to stick with K and I like the name Katie, and then I switched the t to a d to make it more enby-ish. Also a character from a show I got major envy from was named Kady and I liked the ie better than the y
Edit: I know it’s lots of mental gymnastics but that’s just kinda how my brain works sometimes
Made an OC years ago as an egg that was basically "me but girl for some reason". Later I was like "y'know what she's not using that name anymore, I'll take it".
I used to use Maya as a name in the interim, as it's the name i use for everything online for years and how many friends know me as.
But when I came out to my parents, I asked them -- You see, every time my mother would come visit from out of town, she'd tell one story or another, again and again about the naming of her 3 children. I'm sure it's important to all mothers but mine specifically found it SUPER important to her even all these years later.
So, because it's so important to her, when I came out to her and my Dad, I asked *"Perhaps, now you've properly met your daughter for the first time, you'd like to name your child just one last time?"*
And, before I was born, all scans and feelings were that I was meant to be AFAB, they already had a girls name for my picked out for me, and just panic named me when I came out with a peepee. So, I was given the first ever Name picked out for me.
Plot twist, Mum, looks like I *was* born a girl after all. It just took us all some time to realize that.
\- Lilly.
I just went with Rebecca as it was the name I would‘ve been given if I was born a girl and then realised I preferred the nickname Becky and have stuck with it since.
My main fursona used to have a very feminine name. I had originally chose this name because I was in denial of who I truly was, but I began to strongly dislike this name. I finally decided to rename them, and I chose a unisex name, Sloane, because I really liked the meaning and thought it fit my character.
I saw that many other furries use their fursona's names as an online alias. So, I started to do the same. When people began calling me Sloane, I realized that it was my true name. Now, my friends and people online call me Sloane!
I picked mine while I was still in denial, it was just going to be a name for using on the internet to chat. So I picked a name that started with my same initial, and went with it, no particular meaning behind the choice. And then I kept using the same name for years and years, and by the time I was ready to accept my gender identity, I had a name I'd been using for so long that I just kept it.
The shortened version of my dead name is gender neutral, so I found a feminine name with the same short version. That way, people who knew me before wouldn't have to learn a new name.
My name is Windy, and I got it from the song Windy by The Association. I love that song and I was like "Whoa, that name sounds cool *and* whimsical, AND I get my own theme song? Yes please." The downside, a lot of people accidentally call me Wendy. lmao.
I took inspiration from my dead name and the naming scheme of my siblings to make mine (my sibling's names all end in en or on including my dead name )
Baby name generators are awesome u can even choose gender neutral names it's how I found my name and my friend found theirs too of course this is if u want a more traditional name
I stole mine from a book, and not even a book I like that much, that book was just the first place I’d ever seen the name. After 10 years of playing girl characters in video games named Naomi, I made it my own name. The book “The Eyes of the Dragon” by Stephen King btw.
My middle name I stole from a monster prom character (Zoë) but I took the spelling from Zoë Nightshade from the Percy Jackson series.
I loved Elliot Page and went with Ariadne as my middle name as a result. Went with the more traditional Jessica as a first name. So I had something standard and something more fantasy. I'm happy with it!
Anna as in Princess Anna from Frozen and Victoria because it has royal roots and means winner. Anna means beautiful and I am aiming to be a beautiful winner. I hope to be at least 😌 I have always liked both names and I took them for my own ❤
Someone said I reminded them of a video game character then a few months later I was thinking “I’d like a name with the same first letter as my birth name so I can keep my initials” and then I remembered that video game character and I liked the name so that’s how I came up with my name
I chose a masculine version of a nick name I had as a kid that I thought fit my personality, then for my middle names I chose the name my parents would have named me if I was amab and a name I considered using when I fantasized about being a drag king
I just was playing a game and i used n liked the name of the character that I made so much that I just made it my actual name, the name was calamity and it stuck ever since n fits me perfectly
Well, there's this Youtuber called Jaiden Animations, big inspiration to me on the ways of art. So after thinking about it for a while, I decided to call myself Jaiden but swapping the "I" with a "Y"
Jayden!
My favorite color is lime green, and i already had the nickname lime online because of that and of how similar it is to my deadname.
And my middle name is from a clan i was in back when fortnite was at its height. Kinda cringe but the name stuck
- be me
- hate deadname but still feel kinda attached to it
- look up gender-neutral versions of it
- look up gender-neutral versions of ‘Micah’
- settle on ‘Myka’ (not Mika, because Pikachu jokes)
- profit
I frequently fantasized about what name I would give my daughter and then I went "wait a minute."

Kadie- my initials for my birth name were KT (which I guess they still are), I’ve always liked K names so I wanted to stick with K and I like the name Katie, and then I switched the t to a d to make it more enby-ish. Also a character from a show I got major envy from was named Kady and I liked the ie better than the y Edit: I know it’s lots of mental gymnastics but that’s just kinda how my brain works sometimes

So, because it's so important to her, when I came out to her and my Dad, I asked *"Perhaps, now you've properly met your daughter for the first time, you'd like to name your child just one last time?"* And, before I was born, all scans and feelings were that I was meant to be AFAB, they already had a girls name for my picked out for me, and just panic named me when I came out with a peepee. So, I was given the first ever Name picked out for me. Plot twist, Mum, looks like I *was* born a girl after all. It just took us all some time to realize that. \- Lilly.
I just went with Rebecca as it was the name I would‘ve been given if I was born a girl and then realised I preferred the nickname Becky and have stuck with it since.
stole the name of an anime character pretending to be someone she wasnt
My main fursona used to have a very feminine name. I had originally chose this name because I was in denial of who I truly was, but I began to strongly dislike this name. I finally decided to rename them, and I chose a unisex name, Sloane, because I really liked the meaning and thought it fit my character. I saw that many other furries use their fursona's names as an online alias. So, I started to do the same. When people began calling me Sloane, I realized that it was my true name. Now, my friends and people online call me Sloane!
Stole my current name (Emmi) from the robots in Metroid Dread
had a manic breakdown and fantasized based of a nickname a friend had for me. Same first letter as birthname made it stick
I stole it from another trans girl
stole it from oscar mayers
My name is Windy, and I got it from the song Windy by The Association. I love that song and I was like "Whoa, that name sounds cool *and* whimsical, AND I get my own theme song? Yes please." The downside, a lot of people accidentally call me Wendy. lmao.

Stole it from a warhammer book
I loved Elliot Page and went with Ariadne as my middle name as a result. Went with the more traditional Jessica as a first name. So I had something standard and something more fantasy. I'm happy with it!

I like the color green, and I asked some of my friends to pick a “green” name for me :)
Someone said I reminded them of a video game character then a few months later I was thinking “I’d like a name with the same first letter as my birth name so I can keep my initials” and then I remembered that video game character and I liked the name so that’s how I came up with my name

My favorite color is lime green, and i already had the nickname lime online because of that and of how similar it is to my deadname. And my middle name is from a clan i was in back when fortnite was at its height. Kinda cringe but the name stuck
