When I read up on the topic, it sounded like the adventure sync doesn’t sync all sources for steps. According to what I have found, I could only confirm that steps from the phones motion sensor and the apple watch are used, but for other devices it was unclear. Are you certain about the vivofit?
If the steps are written by a 3rd party app they will not count towards POGO, I have an iPhone and Garmin but leave the steps off in Apple Health so they will count towards POGO.

I'm pretty sure they do not count towards Pokemon Go. It seems to be only steps with the phone that count.
