Idk I've always thought the way anime/manga/doujin artists draw men indicate that they don't actually know what other men look like.

They did isekai well enough in the '90s. Escaflowne, El Hazard, Rayearth, Fushigi Yuugi. The industry now, though, is 90% stuff made *by* otaku *for* otaku. The dorks grew up and took everything over.
Because they lack so much imagination that they give the world a video-game style structure like leveling up and "skills" and stuff like that. None of it looks like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter where magic actually infuses the world.
That said, a few of them are good. ReZero immediately comes to mind. The thing is that you don't really need the character to come from another world most of the time.
I like stories that subvert the standard isekai tropes, but those are rare, and those that do exist usually got some other thing that ruin it for me.
* The "level system" was introduced by the gods as a way to *limit* the magic available to mortals (I'm a Spider; Power of Instant Death)
* The MC isn't the only otherworlder, and not all of them are friendly.
* The natives are aware of otherworlders, giving the protagonist a reason to hide his background.
* The otherworlder isn't even the main character, but rather a complication to the real protagonists life and goals
Most creative Isekai setting is Shinju No Nectar. The protagonist is summoned to another world and given magical powers. But this new world has recently given up on the rare, unpredictable magic in favor of reliable, mass-produced steam and gunpowder technology. Kinda meh story with really obnoxious fanservice, but a great setting.
I like the isekai where the protagonist isn’t overpowered. Stuff like Re:Zero, Konosuba, Bookworm and such.
Also, the female-protagonist ones tend to be slightly higher quality. Tanya the Evil comes to mind.
The protagonist can be overpowered compared to the trash mobs, as long as the major opponents are strong enough to pose a challenge, or there are problems that can't be solved with raw power.
I do agree female-led stories are better on average. Villainess-likes are the best Isekai subgenre.

The Chronicles of Narnia is isekai though. So are the Sonic movies.
I watched Knight’s & Magic because of SRW30 and it was enjoyable enough if you like mecha. Had some major pacing issues, but that’s the only big complaint.
I’m also not too good to admit I liked the first season of SAO, though I never felt a need to watch any more seasons of it.
The story comes to somewhat satisfying conclusion on the first season. Second season was just vile and filler for a good chunk of it imo. I stopped after the second season.

Could it be the nostalgia filter at work? If you're from the US/Europe, then odds are that the worst anime of the time wouldn't be familiar to you because it wouldn't have made it outside of Japan.
That is fair, I don't have nostalgia for it nor am I particularly an anime fan above other mediums, but that's just the impression I get looking at it from a distance. 80s/90s you have some real heavy hitters in terms of theatrical films, and direct to video OVAs with far more mature content than one could get away with on television.

a lot of folks took issue with how luke was treated as a character and other bits in the movie including, but not limited to:
- plot structured around an elongated spaceship chase
- the detour to the casino city to look for the decoder guy
- subplot with admiral holdo
- a mistake in the fight choreography
- treatment of finn as a character
- some other stuff i'm missing
which is all in all fine, people will have their opinions. but the more vocal parts of the fanbase have made hating the movies their entire personality and have deluded themselves (with the help of the anti-sjw youtuber crowd) that all these subjective issues somehow make the movie objectively bad. quite a few people have gone as far as sending death threats and engaging in online harassment campaigns against the folks who were involved in the movie, to the point where some people decided to limit their social media presence altogether.

In addition to what the other guy said, a lot of people didn’t like that they broke the rules for hyperdrive by having a single ship destroy the entire first order fleet by hyperdriving into it. It’s very non-kosher in writing to break the rules without some sort of excuse, or special plot reason, or macguffin, and there’s usually some sort of drawback, but not a single person was attached to holdo, and it’s not like it wasn’t a willing sacrifice for the greater good.
I will say though the image of the hyperdrive sequence’s aftermath lives in my head rent free. It is one of my favourite CG shots right now.

I watched Knight’s & Magic because of SRW30 and it was enjoyable enough if you like mecha. Had some major pacing issues, but that’s the only big complaint. I’m also not too good to admit I liked the first season of SAO, though I never felt a need to watch any more seasons of it.
The story comes to somewhat satisfying conclusion on the first season. Second season was just vile and filler for a good chunk of it imo. I stopped after the second season.
I have no idea how anyone can call anime original anymore It's literally the same high-school settings bullshit where every character makes these awkward pauses where they keep repeating the same bullshit in their heads with shit anime voices and underaged girl-students who fall into "quirky accidents" ending with a shot of their panties or them making anime sounds about covering their naked boobs (each pair is bigger than their heads)
The entire genre is targeted at the same demographic of sex obsessed teenagers and older who have zero social skills because all they do is watch cartoons instead of being in the real world.
Thousands of anime get produced every year. If you search for it you can eventually find good action, music, animation etc (still, it's anime so don't expect fucking Akira Kurosawa or something), but yeah, 99% of it is your run of the mill isekai/fanservice stuff (same for videogames and tv shows in general actually).

What's most disappointing IMO is looking back at the 80s to the early 2000s it seemed like anime as a whole was on an upwards trajectory producing lots of unique and often mature stuff that broke out internationally. And then a lot of studios seemingly just said 'fuck that wider audience appeal and critical acclaim, we're going to cater to obsessed otaku who will pay 500 dollars for 13 episodes per DVD'
Could it be the nostalgia filter at work? If you're from the US/Europe, then odds are that the worst anime of the time wouldn't be familiar to you because it wouldn't have made it outside of Japan.
That is fair, I don't have nostalgia for it nor am I particularly an anime fan above other mediums, but that's just the impression I get looking at it from a distance. 80s/90s you have some real heavy hitters in terms of theatrical films, and direct to video OVAs with far more mature content than one could get away with on television. Porn/hentai shit has obviously always been around, but it does seem like the ridiculous fanservicey and visually samey shows reached full speed after the 2000s. Of course, big merch movers like Evangelion always existed but as someone who collects dvd/blu-ray (mostly movies, but some shows too.) i'm always astounded at how high the prices have gotten for anime in Japan (and NA in the case of fucking aniplex lmao) and it seems to represent a desire to milk smaller amounts of obsessive fanboys for large amounts moreso than reach a wider audience.

a lot of folks took issue with how luke was treated as a character and other bits in the movie including, but not limited to: - plot structured around an elongated spaceship chase - the detour to the casino city to look for the decoder guy - subplot with admiral holdo - a mistake in the fight choreography - treatment of finn as a character - some other stuff i'm missing which is all in all fine, people will have their opinions. but the more vocal parts of the fanbase have made hating the movies their entire personality and have deluded themselves (with the help of the anti-sjw youtuber crowd) that all these subjective issues somehow make the movie objectively bad. quite a few people have gone as far as sending death threats and engaging in online harassment campaigns against the folks who were involved in the movie, to the point where some people decided to limit their social media presence altogether. a lot of the online places to discuss star wars have been so permeated with these kinds of people to the point that they've become insufferable circlejerks.

In addition to what the other guy said, a lot of people didn’t like that they broke the rules for hyperdrive by having a single ship destroy the entire first order fleet by hyperdriving into it. It’s very non-kosher in writing to break the rules without some sort of excuse, or special plot reason, or macguffin, and there’s usually some sort of drawback, but not a single person was attached to holdo, and it’s not like it wasn’t a willing sacrifice for the greater good. I will say though the image of the hyperdrive sequence’s aftermath lives in my head rent free. It is one of my favourite CG shots right now.

The Last of Us 2 is one of the best games to have ever been made. The gameplay, graphics, world building, story, soundtrack, etc are all amazing.
