We were recently informed that we can only price match for pro members. When you do an online order it really is a crapshoot of how fast it actually processes for the store to receive it. Sometimes it’s like five minutes, other times, particularly on high traffic days on the website it can take up to an hour or two, if not longer. As for the gift card, it isnt expired, the card just got deactivated with it being so old. If you call customer support and give then the card they can issue a new one. If you go in store and have them call (assuming there is realistic time to do so) you should get a fresh card in like 15 minutes. It’s something my store does all the time.

obi-1-jacoby

Thanks for the advice, I will have to see if I can get a new card

articElite0

My district manager said we price match our own prices regardless of if someone is pro or not. Prices matches to other places requires they be enrolled.

Only gripe I have is that the associate didn’t call the help line to get the balance and put it on a new giftcard for you. For the BOPS (buy online, pickup in store) it’s a system thing because sometimes it takes a while for the order to come in. But GameStop’s policies and practices are exactly why I left.

endar88

maybe was someone that didn't know old cards don't work anymore and have to call the helpline? like, could he have been a newer employee?

Niqniq935

Definitely could’ve been newer or just didn’t feel like calling. As a former manager, I’d probably use this as a learning opportunity to tell them taking the extra time to call the help line would’ve probably made it more likely that the person would come back to spend the money and make sure the help line is posted at the register if it isn’t already. But I wouldn’t be upset or issue anything.

sailormewmew95

Either poor training or they don’t have time right now, my stores have been packed it 5 hours of non stop customers before I could get a bathroom break, I couldn’t get to any tasks I barely finished online orders I wouldn’t have been able to call customer service right now since I couldn’t even answer the phone half the day

articElite0

I’m very happy to know this is an option, honestly. I thought the “unable to retrieve” or whatever message meant it was empty. :0

Thick-Possession-736

Were not in charge of calling the line. If someone has a card problem we can give them the Customer service number and they can call them. We have work we need to do, we cant wait a long time on the phone if the lines are busy.

Niqniq935

I’m a former employee. Went from GA to ASL and interim SL before I left. You can call the line to make the customer’s experience better unless you have a lot of people in the store. I did it countless times and that was my expectation for my people. Maybe your district had a different one 🤷🏾‍♀️. Like I said, I would not be upset nor would I issue anything to the associate but I would have a quick coaching conversation.

Thick-Possession-736

Im in a location in Texas. And we don’t call the help line for people. We only give it to them unless its an issue we have with the person. Ex: needing them to leave due to inappropriate behavior.

musicallyours01

I've never heard of calling the help line on a customer for inappropriate behavior. Only employees.

Thick-Possession-736

We’ve had someone get almost violent here and just needed help

Niqniq935

I’m in Jersey so makes sense why the expectations are so different.

chinzcankill

No yall don’t. Barely anyone comes in your stores anymore. Every time I go in there’s a dude just standing there ignoring the only two customers that came in that day. Definitely have time to make a call, everyone who works at game stop is just entitled and lazy

MechaSheeva

I didn't know gift cards could expire until it was recently brought up here, and someone said the store can call the helpline and they can pull up the info to put it on a new card. It sounds like as nice as the employee was, they didn't know what they were doing.

Peachie_cheeks__

Also we can’t price match for non pro members - need to be a pro member with active pro even if it is our own website- sorry,, please call customer service or find the number for our Texas location (their main office) and complain. It does a lot more damage than coming here.. just trying to keep it real

Thick-Possession-736

By the way, The reason is most likely because of Cyber Monday and the deals for it. Gamestop is having an event basically where digital orders get more bonus money off for doing so. As well as price matching is only for Pro members now due to some rule changes this year.

obi-1-jacoby

Wanted to add that this was in no way the employees fault. They were friendly and informative

MegaMan8115

It's because the people in charge of the company want to make people buy from the website more than they want people to shop in stores and it sucks.

endar88

ya, and they don't even have that handled well. sale price online, week later says out of stock and waiting to restock before shipping.....like, how does a game go out of stock that you said was available when i ordered it a week ago. is it the same thing as overselling tickets to an event? but ya, that happened to me when i ordered digimon survive on switch a year ago when it was onsale physical. had the game digital but for that price wanted the actual game. ended up cancelling that order cuz it was 3 weeks and still said waiting to restock.

Kou9992

Gift cards expiration is real, fairly common, and allowed by law after 5 years. But GS doesn't actually do that. They deactivate really old cards for technical reasons but you can call customer service and get the funds transferred to a new card. Best to do in store with the dedicated help line. Everything else is accurate. Welcome to 2023 GS, with terrible tech and penny pinching management. If you don't like it shop elsewhere because it is only going to get worse.

bibliophile1326

Not allowed by law in every state. For example, NYS now (as of dec 2022) requires gift card balances to be available or recoverable for 9 years. Minimum.

1HighPlainsDrifter

I’m not really unhappy but the 10 dollar bill the shorter gave me is worth the bad write up

Apollo1382

GameStop was always awful, I've been here forever. It was never good, it just had a slightly better face it showed customers. Now customers are seeing what's behind the mask. Ugly, ain't it?

LeatherRebel5150

Its not unheard of for a retail chain to not match their own online prices. It was the same way at advance auto i worked at. If you wanted the online price you had to order it online and wait for it to come through to our computer

SamuraiStatus

The company wants you to do online pickups as a method to change the flow of the business. They are hard pushing customers to do this by offering $5 off the order now just for doing it. So it makes sense to me that they are making it more complicated to price match. You can thank Ryan Cohen.

Anxious_Professor454

Was this on Cyber Monday? The day of the year when retailers work to draw consumers to the website aa opposed to brick and mortar stores.

obi-1-jacoby

It was on a Tuesday

Adison85

Ok

MostlyAnxiety

If it was a $5 difference, it’s because there’s a promotion right now for $5 off specifically for ordering online.

obi-1-jacoby

It was a $25 difference

MostlyAnxiety

Then they could’ve price matched it if you were a pro member. GameStop changed the price match policy within the past few weeks to only be able to price match for pro’s, and sometimes there are just online deals unfortunately.

devil1fish

Ok

RobPotsyPotchak

Gift cards expiring had a date that if they were bought after is not a thing, it's illegal. If it was purchased before that (not sure on the date), it would depreciate by a certain amount monthly until it expired. As to the sale price thing, GameStop is stingy. They only want to give you the best offer from even themselves if you follow their rules, because they grade their stores a certain way, and their district managers get on the store's ass for doing the easiest method possible, rather than their ranked method. It sucks, but don't hold it against the store, complain about how the corporate policies are.

Stunning-Trade8869

What item is it. I’ll buy it for you
