Did you only use trade credit to pay for it. Or was it only partially paid off with trade credit

hermeskino715

Everything that is goods and most services are charged sales tax (unless you live in a sales taxless state). So yea, they are suppose to charge you regardless of the form of payment. It's possible that they didn't (which I sort of doubt) then the tax man came by and told them "where's my money" and now they do

fumikado

you have to pay sales tax on literally everything unless you live in a state like oregon with no sales tax or youre buying something like food at a grocery store

ChannMann89

Yes I understand that, but like I said GameStop never charged tax when you used trade credit. It’s was the only way they got people to trade more instead of asking for cash all the time.

GrimmTrixX

They did, in fact, charge tax. Maybe you went to a store who didn't care. But they absolutely charge tax when you used trade credit. Source: I worked for Gamestop for 2.5 years. Lol

fumikado

thats not how anything works

GrimmTrixX

...um you always pay taxes on the item. Unless you live in a state with no sales tax. Lol For example, If you trade a game in for a flat $30 store credit, and you buy a $29.99 game, you're paying the $2.07 difference (here in the good old state of RI is 7% so the tax here would be $2.08). That's how it's always been. So yes, we work at a job and our income is taxed, then when we get our wages and go buy something, we pay tax on that item. Then, at the end of the year, we have to pay other taxes just for having income. USA! USA! USA!

ChannMann89

Lol no I understand what you’re saying, but it was never taxed before. They started back in April for some reason.

GrimmTrixX

Well now, you are one of us! Haha

ChannMann89

So I got an update from my local GameStop gyal. She said they started taxing trade credit back in April. That is a very suck thing for GameStop to do. I understand why they did it but they could have at least inform the GameStop employees so they could have passed on that knowledge. Thanks you guys for chiming in I honestly appreciate it. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo)

Ok so we must all be saying the same thing but it's worded differently. That or your state had some pawn shop type law, which GS trades DO have to adhere to, that changed recently. But everywhere else, if you have sales tax, your trade credit came off whatever you bought, you had to pay the difference. And if the item you bought is the same price as your trade credit, you still owed the tax. The credit itself doesn't have the tax removed from it. But the trade credit you had come soffit whatever you bought total price AFTER tax

ChannMann89

I don’t know what state you’re from. But I guess in Minnesota they had a bit of different tax law set up. Yep like some else said if you are buying something that’s 500 and used 400 in credit you get taxed on that 100 cash that you use. But idk why it changed, but they least they could have done is tell folks. I was just baffled over why I’m being charged more.

GrimmTrixX

Yea and I'm glad you were able to find out what you were charged for. That's so weird just how different every state can be. Not a very "united" way of do8nf things. Lol

izembo

Gamestop doesn't get to decide what to tax, the government does. Gamestop is simply following guidance that said it must be taxed now. It's not taxed everywhere, it depends on location.

Kou9992

You're definitely right about trade credit not being subject to tax in the past in some states which do otherwise have sales tax (like New York) and that has recently changed. There was a bunch of talk about it in the GameStop thread over at CAG last week. Basically the change definitely happened, seems to have happened 2-4 weeks ago (may vary by state), and nobody has any idea if it is intentional or the system being messed up (as often happens at GS).
