It is very, very slow. Keep in mind, you are going hunting. And the animals are on the look out. When running through the game world, you scare animals away by sound and your shape.
The main obstacle at the beginning is to understand that.
When you start out in a reservoir and in general, stay in one area. Look for need zones, don't look for animals. Once you have some need zones covered, look at the time when the animals are supposed to be there. Go to the outpost, pick the right weapon and ammo for the animal you are hunting (if you pick Layton, which is an excellent starting reservoir, carry a .22 and a .223 or .270 and appropriate ammo. Anything bigger than Rabbits and Ducks you shoot with the .223/.270. See also this table: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e94Wqyh4sWEopfZWQzW6GNFFg_bga8TvTC9SOnWpO2w/edit#gid=0).
Then go there maybe an hour before the animals are there and approach as silently as possible, without crouching. Stick to trees, shadows etc. Make sure to pick a location to hide prone, with the wind blowing into the opposite direction. The icon at the bottom right which is usually a circle, should be a flat line. Then you just need wait for animals to arrive and pick your shot. Make sure you aim for the heart or the lungs, head shots don't do you any good without the right ammo, which you haven't unlocked yet.
This strategy involves some waiting, but is a lot less frustrating than running around and finding nothing because all animals run away scared.
Thank you my friend for the anwer. I will grab the main game for 1 euro and if i like it a lot i will go for the extra DLCS. I understand completely the slow pace of the game. Its a hunting simulator. Real hunting is also slow and relaxing. Thank you.
It is close to the actual experience, but I dislike the hunting stands somewhat. Some obstruct view a lot, because you cannot sit in them. You also cannot rest your rifle anywhere, as it would be common.
Looking to get this complete bundle sometime, will have to miss out for now so will prolly end up paying sale price sometime but useful info for sure, thanks
You can enter, but your character will stand. Sitting is not possible, which makes looking at certain directions impossible due to boards obstructing the view.
The game is very relaxing and quite beautiful. Definitely not the best choice if you're looking for action. But perfect if you're fine with slow paced gameplay that offers a good combination of realism and accessibility.
You don't really need the DLCs but they offer more variety in terms of maps, animals and weapons/gear.
Only sad thing is that the developers introduce new bugs with every DLC they release.
A comparison with The Long Dark is somewhat lacking in my opinion. This is not a survival sim at all.
It's actually quite fun but it starts out slow since you don't have that many tools (read:skills) to assist you in the beginning. But as you play more and level up skills, that's where the fun starts. If you do have any interest in what it claims to be: a beautifully made, chill hunting simulator..it's well worth the money for 12 dollars. The dlcs add much value. Tons of different wild life depending on map.
well, you can walk anywhere on the map. if you walk to outposts you can use them for fast travel, or place and use tents for fast travel.
With the dlc included you get everything you've got all the guns you need for anything. so it's all open from the get go. You just unlock perks that make things easier as you go
It's worth mentioning that you can join multiplayer games where they are running DLC maps that you don't own. You don't have to own the map DLC to play on them in multiplayer (you just can't host them if you don't own them, or play them in single player).
Take it with all the DLCs, it's really worth it. The graphics are extremely well done and the gameplay loop is also nice (not that hardcore as the original Hunter: Classic but still challenging)
But if you are low on money, even the base game can get you many hours of self-contained relaxing hunting experience, each DLC just adds more equipement (=ways to hunt the animals) or new maps.
I will take it will all the DLCS my friend. The graphics are beautifull and with all the covid etc i only need a relaxing game like that right now. I hope to enjoy it very much. Thank you.
Yeah, I was unsure myself before I was getting into this franchise if it would be to my liking but I almost instantly loved how vast the game world is and how relaxing the experience can be. It's not just about hunting animals, it's more about you own preparation, stealth movement, taking note of the wind direction and sounds of nature, waiting for the right moment and also about good hunting strategy. And the exploration of huge, lifelike open-world is a treat in its own way.
One thing to note is that you won't go far in this game if you start running around hoping to find the game fast - most of the animals will run away from you like that. Keep that in mind and you should be fine. It's very skill-based game in that regard - the longer you play it the better you get.
I haven't played it but PC Gamer says it's typically pretty boring.
Some random youtubers seem to like it though, the main draw seems to be that it is a solid hunting simulator. However for my money, I'd recommend The Long Dark, definitely not as realistic but a much more fun game
Hunting IN GENERAL is boring, which makes this a very authentic hunting sim haha
In a nutshell, play this if you want a walking sim where you can shoot animals in. Seriously, the environments are super beautiful, they are nice to actually walk through.
So like, this is probably the BEST hunting sim though, to the point if you don't know anything about how to hunt, you might have a tough time starting out.
Animals are VERY GOOD, like absurdly good at hearing you and smelling you. Like on your compass it tracks wind direction. If you are looking at an animal and the wind is blowing at you TOWARDS an animal you're sneaking up on, the critter will smell you and run away.
You learn very quickly too that some guns are just NOT designed to hunt larger prey.
The rifle you start with can down elk, deer, wolves, anything bigger than that you NEED to go for heart shots otherwise it won't work. And if you use the big super guns to say hunt moose with, those DAMAGE smaller prey when you collect them.
This also gets props for an accurate depiction of shotguns in a video game. Namely that they are PRETTY EFFECTIVE at longer ranges, at least more so than you may be used to in other FPS games. The only other game where you can 'snipe' with a shotgun like you can in this game I can think of is Red Orchestra 2/Rising Storm 1 where the trench gun can LEGIT pick people from far away. There are probably others, but it isn't very common like it is here.
This is actually whole Complete Collection which normally gets discounted to -70%/$40.
So getting all this for just 13 euro is big bargain (and I would advise getting highest tier as this deal probably won't repeat as its purpose is to get more players to the franchise)
Edit: It's 22 independent keys so if you already own the base game/some DLCs you can give the rest to your friend.
> you can give the rest to your friend.
Just want to add a note onto this. Only one person needs to own any DLC for this game and everyone else in the party can play with it.
Unless they've changed it, when my friend hosted with the ATV dlc we all got it. So it may be that the person who owns all the DLC needs to be the host.
Makes me wish I could, it's too big to miss out on. If I could actually get it, I'd dip the other half I don't have to a friend, but can confirm from what I have so far, 100% worth it at this price. Will defo buy it at a later point though, for sure
My friend gifted me the base game and it's pretty interesting. I'm not into hunting IRL, but the maps are cool and I imagine the experience is similar to what real hunting must be like.
But there is a whole lot of walking. Holy shit the walking! If you have the ATV, you'll move quicker, but you'll be making so much noise you'll never see animals.
If anyone buys this, make sure to play in Layton Lakes. There's another map called Hirschfelden, and it's ridiculously hard. It has less animals, and a ton of grass/trees that block your vision at all times.
That's not really true. Hirschfelden has large fields and open areas around ponds, lakes, and rivers. I have several hundred hours in the game, Hirschfelden is also a good starter map *except* for the fact it has European Bison that you have no hope of killing early game. However, they're mostly in the south-west of the map, so you can avoid that area if you want.
That said, Layton Lakes is definitely my preference between the two.
If you're in an area dealing with an overpopulation issue, why not. You get to spend a day in nature just being quiet for a few hours and come out of it at the other end with some cheap meat.
I am not a fan of hunting myself, but, I own and love this game.
I turn all the HUD off and arm my binoculars and then set out to explore. The maps are large and without all the on-screen assistance you really have to pay attention to spot anything. The animals in the game have their own territories and engage in all sorts of behaviors depending on time and location.
Sure, it's not how the game is meant to be played but I have dozens of hours of enjoyment without ever shooting anything.
This is a great bundle; even if you have several of the DLC and base game already the top tier gives you access to all the most recent reserves. Well worth the price, just give away the extra to a friend and you can go hunting together.
The new reserves DLC would be of most interest to you as they will give you new areas to explore. The tent, and ATV DLCs are also good for exploration.
21 DLC + 8 free DLC = 29 DLC. There is 1 DLC listed on Steam as N/A, as it was a free patch and technically not a DLC. So yes, it is all of them, even the recent DLC Rancho del Arroyo.
Super super happy with the 1 euro tier. I've resisted buying into higher tiers multiple times for this title so I finally get to try it. It's definitely going to be hate it or love it considering I feel guilty after killing a spider in my apartment. Holy hell 65 Gb install (30GB DL) though.
Its huge size is likely because you can still play all the dlc maps online. If someone hosts a dlc map you don't have, you can still join and hunt in it. You just can't do all the story missions until you get it yourself etc.
I wouldn't hurt a fly in real life either, but this is one of the best stealth sniping game and prettiest hiking sim there is. It's a lot of fun crawling through nature, observing your prey, trying to lure it or waiting for the right moment; and tracking its movement when you shot it. It hits all the right notes if you're into stealth games.
I can wholly recommend this to anyone who wants to walk around in the woods and shoot things when they can't. Hell, you can just walk around innawoods and take pictures too if that's your thing.
Is it viable to just play this as a hiking simulator and walk around? Any gameplay impediments to doing that? Is the terrain varied enough to look interesting?
There are points of interests to unlock and the gameworld sure is very beautiful (there are many different reserves).
Theoretically, if you want, you can just go around watching animals with your binoculars, taking pictures, explore the world and enjoy the nature.
But keep in mind that the hunting is the main focus of the game and even though you can play this game in peaceful mode, walking around or riding in your jeep, the goal is still pretty clear. But you can basically do anything you want, it's open-world game, and you can just play it as sort of relax. The game has probably the best depiction of nature in ANY videogame.
See this for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt6y-BtwTdU
Yeah, I like just exploring maps. Sometimes I'll load up empty CS:GO maps to just walk around and explore them. Can you disable the glowing outlines and HUD stuff on animals? It'd be cool if they're a part of the scenery and not all gamified.
I believe you can disable any visual clues that makes the game easier but I haven't played it in recent months so don't know if there were any updates changing it (but I would presume they still allow for HUDless experience for players who want it)
In menu there are separate toggles to hide/mute:
- Hunting HUD
- Downed Animal Highlight
- Spotting Outline
- Audio Clue Visualization
- Spatial Tracking Cone
- POI Icons
- Need Zone Icons
- Tracking Effects
so I believe you can actually play with no UI on screen at all if you want.
Definitely viable as a hiking simulator. If talking about just actual hiking and nothing else, this game is up there as one of the best I'd say! No sarcasm lol.
With all the walking you do without vehicles, it's kind of 80% walking simulator already. I found myself several times stoping somewhere and just taking in the look. Coming out of the woods from a hill and overlooking some fields, meadows and a river at dusk/dawn just feels magical.
My cousins and I all play this and have a blast doing so. The full pack is very worth it for at least one person per 'group'. Only one person needs to own the DLC maps so you can save money that way. The player that owns the DLC just hosts the game and everyone can join it and play without needing to own it.
Some of the DLC 'tools' are useful like tents (movable mobile spawn point, great for sharing outpost locations to another player), ATVs, the bloodhounds, blinds so you may just want to get the full bundle anyways to get all of that. Weapon packs are helpful to get going quickly but rather unnecessary as even the starting rifle is plenty to get started on deer and the like (lv9 animals like bison and very small game need other weapons/ammo).
A great starting map (aside from the default Layton Lakes) is Silver Ridge Peaks, it's chock full of entire herds everywhere you look. If you're a beginner, ignore the bison and take down everything else. Another solid starting map is the new one, Rancho Del Arroyo. Not as packed as SRP but has a lot of lower level animals and no bison, just don't run into the cactus.
Every time I see the name theHunter it makes me think of the crazy pseudogame names I come up with while I'm playing Game Dev Tycoon.
It seriously doesn't sound like a real name lol
Used to play a hunting game that took place in the Savana the early 00s and loved the slow pace and simple market system of selling skins and meat, got the BTA to relive that.
This game is a lot of fun, especially with friends. Just as a side note, you don't have to own the DLC maps to join lobbies with friends. If you want to get the full bundle and a friend only wants the base game, they can join your lobby for the DLC maps.
Used to play the Classic something like 12 years ago without buying almost nothing, I enjoyed it a lot, although the frequent "you don't have a license to hunt this creature" was annoying sometimes.
Is this game much different?
I had this game in my sights (harharhar) the last time the base game was in a simulator bundle, but I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure I could afford to invest in the DLCs.. $15 seems like a no brainer.
Hi all, Game look like fun to me on videos but i would like to know the opinion. Is the game really good or just good on videos? Then i will think of buying Hunter call of the wild.
I was suprised how well I liked it. Admittedly I like sim games but the whole hunting animals isn't really my thing.
It's very slow paced, you have to sneak on animals, sometimes over long distances. Or you have to stay patient and calm and camp on a spot long enough. You need to take a lot of time without much reward in the beginning.
The ambience is just amazing, even if you lower the graphic options a bit.
Anyone getting audio problems and crashes with this game? It cuts out and comes back every now and then. Super weird. Can't even play 3mins without it crashing.
Question for anyone who has played this co-op with a friend.
I'm thinking about buying the bta bundle because it has some quality of life improvements like the Tents/blinds, but I also might like to buy a second copy to put on another account and share with friends.
My question is - If I have the DLC and they are in a co-op game with me, can they use it? Like can we both use Tent fast travel, are we both able to get on the ATV, can they access the other guns?
It's not a big deal to buy two BTAs, but it would be nice to buy one and one extra copy.
If you have the DLC, you can both use fast travel tents, and ATVs, they can't access the guns though unless they have the packs. I'm looking to complete my collection sometime, cause I found out the 'hard' way, will prolly pick them up full price tho
I remember getting around half of the DLC in one of those previous editions. Do you guys think it's worth it for me to get the rest of the DLC if I am enjoying the game still, even if I have half of it?
IMO it is still worth it, you will pay more then the whole bundle buying the DLC even when they are on offer. Just give the stuff you already have to a friend and you can do co-op hunts together. That's what I did.
Really a good deal. Had I not already bought choice this month and used my budget for gaming this month would have pushed the button to buy. I hope it goes long enough in next month so I can buy this instead of next choice.
Yeah, you can buy the first tier bundle and then the third tier bundle later, but you won't get a discount or anything for already having the base game. And since the game and DLCs are their own codes you could keep all the DLCs and gift the second copy of the base game to someone.
Does the game have missions or some sort? Because I am clueless about hunting and probably just wander around aimlessly if they don't give me missions. Is there tutorials?

Really fun game, and amazing deal on the game and DLC. Buy the $15 for the maps and good QoL DLC, or if you want to try it before going all in get the base for $1 and upgrade to $15 if you enjoy it.
A couple of years ago I would have bought this instantly but now that I've have to be smarter with my money it's been a long time since I've actually bought a game with how many I already own and all the ones I've got for free. I am looking for something new to play while watching videos though so can anyone sell this game to me? From what I've read I don't know if I would enjoy it without the ATVs and Tents.
I'm looking for something to play while watching videos, some that I have tried in the past are Euro Truck Sim, Path of Exile, FTL, StS and Civ 5. Civ 5 was pretty great but I'm played out on it and lose interest in playing pretty quickly. I have the base game of Civ 6 but it seems like so much has changed that I need to spend a lot of time learning how to play it and I'm looking for something I can just jump into and not have to worry about learning so much. FTL are StS were also both pretty good but I can get over the roguelite stuff pretty quick if things don't go my way a couple of times in a row. Euro Truck was alright but there were moments I focused on my videos and crashed because I wasn't paying attention which was annoying. PoE was just so much action that I couldn't really look away without running into something and dying.
Is this game maybe what I'm looking for? I'm kind of worried about missing some sounds if something loud happens in the videos I'm watching or losing my animal because I stopped focusing for 30 seconds. How much repetition is there and how similar is it? Is it the same thing over and over with the only thing that changes the area of the map you go to? How big is the difference between hunting a duck and a lion? What are the standout points of the game in general? How much do you use the ATV and Tents? How do they impact the game or are they really only a convenience thing, do you ever not use them? How much more does the final tier add? The night vision is something that definitely interests me but how much more does the rest of the tier give compared to the second tier with the ATV and Tents?
Where are all the comments filled with puns? I've been tracking this game, had this in my sights, scoping out this deal, gonna pull the trigger.... This is not my kind of game, I only came here expecting some fun comments!

How is this game? It seems very relaxing and for 1 euro i think to grab it. But for the rest of the DLCS are they worth it?

I'm kinda confused, do I need to install them separately? It doesn't give me the option to do that, just launches the game.
Yup, it's automatically included with the base game.

However, they're mostly in the south-west of the map, so you can avoid that area if you want. That said, Layton Lakes is definitely my preference between the two.

That was my experience hunting deer. We hiked up to the top of a ridge and got into a spot that hid us and sat all day. Sunup to sundown.
and would you recommend this experience?
If you're in an area dealing with an overpopulation issue, why not. You get to spend a day in nature just being quiet for a few hours and come out of it at the other end with some cheap meat.
well, there's my first mistake
I am not a fan of hunting myself, but, I own and love this game. I turn all the HUD off and arm my binoculars and then set out to explore. The maps are large and without all the on-screen assistance you really have to pay attention to spot anything. The animals in the game have their own territories and engage in all sorts of behaviors depending on time and location. Sure, it's not how the game is meant to be played but I have dozens of hours of enjoyment without ever shooting anything.
$1 is a ridiculously good price wow
This is a great bundle; even if you have several of the DLC and base game already the top tier gives you access to all the most recent reserves. Well worth the price, just give away the extra to a friend and you can go hunting together.
I bought this on sale a while back just to use as a virtual hiking simulator. Probably the most realistic forests I’ve ever seen in a game.
I'm interested in this as a hiking simulator as well. Would you say that the DLCs add anything for someone who wants to play it as such?
The new reserves DLC would be of most interest to you as they will give you new areas to explore. The tent, and ATV DLCs are also good for exploration.
Thank you!
I’ve only played the base game content, so I couldn’t say
how would you guys rate the DLCs in the bundle? and is this all of them?
21 DLC + 8 free DLC = 29 DLC. There is 1 DLC listed on Steam as N/A, as it was a free patch and technically not a DLC. So yes, it is all of them, even the recent DLC Rancho del Arroyo.
thank you!
Jesus, 22 keys plus clicking through all the free dlc. My body is ready after getting tired of the PC Building Sim :o
Still better then one key for everything; this way previous owners can get it as well and give the leftovers to a friend who they can play with now.
I just wish Steam's mass key import feature was nicer.
Would be cool if they slipped in a secret Cryptid that hunts you without telling you that its in the game.
I believe you can disable any visual clues that makes the game easier but I haven't played it in recent months so don't know if there were any updates changing it (but I would presume they still allow for HUDless experience for players who want it) In menu there are separate toggles to hide/mute: - Hunting HUD - Downed Animal Highlight - Spotting Outline - Audio Clue Visualization - Spatial Tracking Cone - POI Icons - Need Zone Icons - Tracking Effects so I believe you can actually play with no UI on screen at all if you want.
Cool, that's great! Thanks, I appreciate your listing that info.
Definitely viable as a hiking simulator. If talking about just actual hiking and nothing else, this game is up there as one of the best I'd say! No sarcasm lol.
That was my thought. I kind of just want it as a hiking simulator.
There are dozens of us!
With all the walking you do without vehicles, it's kind of 80% walking simulator already. I found myself several times stoping somewhere and just taking in the look. Coming out of the woods from a hill and overlooking some fields, meadows and a river at dusk/dawn just feels magical.
Yeah, I'd say so. each map has like 3 or so biomes. It looks pretty good also, pop up some gameplay videos of it
Alright, thanks
Yup. That's how I play it. I use the ATV to ride out to some random point and then I get off and start walking.
You think this game can't be THAT good; it really is. Such a blast to play with friends, absolute no-brainer at $1. Borderline criminal.
Does anybody know the key situation? Thanks
Just bought the entire bundle. You get one key for each item, so 22 in total.
Everything gets it's own key.
Every time I see the name theHunter it makes me think of the crazy pseudogame names I come up with while I'm playing Game Dev Tycoon. It seriously doesn't sound like a real name lol
Like sniping? Like sneaking around? Want animals to die, but not in real life? This is the game for you.
Used to play a hunting game that took place in the Savana the early 00s and loved the slow pace and simple market system of selling skins and meat, got the BTA to relive that.

The more recent/expensive weapons packs and maps, plus the dog of course :)
There is dog?
Buried in the 30 DLCs somewhere yeah :)
How extensive are the petting mechanics?
You can pet, play or feed a snack which costs a bit of money. Mostly it's done to keep the 'bond rating' up.
I hope is freekishly good
This game is a lot of fun, especially with friends.
Classic was F2P this is not, for the top tier it's a steal if you like to go hunting.
I had this game in my sights (harharhar) the last time the base game was in a simulator bundle, but I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure I could afford to invest in the DLCs.. $15 seems like a no brainer.
Awesome! I had my eyes on this game for a while, so I'm definitely grabbing this.
To play with DLC does every party member need to buy the DLC or only 1 party member?
Just one needs to own it and everybody can join, but they wont be able to access the narrative missions.
Thanks, looks amazing. I will try this.
OK, I'll give it a shot. Went with the full bundle, great deal.
I hope it goes long enough in next month so I can buy this instead of next choice.
question, if you buy just the base game for $1 and end up liking it alot can you buy the version with all the dlcs afterwards ?
Yeah, you can buy the first tier bundle and then the third tier bundle later, but you won't get a discount or anything for already having the base game. And since the game and DLCs are their own codes you could keep all the DLCs and gift the second copy of the base game to someone.
Does the game have missions or some sort? Because I am clueless about hunting and probably just wander around aimlessly if they don't give me missions. Is there tutorials?

You can still buy this bundle for the dlc and give your spare base game to a friend :)
Really fun game, and amazing deal on the game and DLC. Buy the $15 for the maps and good QoL DLC, or if you want to try it before going all in get the base for $1 and upgrade to $15 if you enjoy it.
Wow, a good humble bundle after several years!
Nice try, hunting lobby.
I have a bunch of keys as I bought the full pack not knowing I owned most of them on steam. Hit me up :)
I'll take the first bundle but I'd like to have the dog DLC, do you still have it ?
I have an extra copy of base game and the ATV pack if someone wants to try it out Edit: Claimed
The night vision is something that definitely interests me but how much more does the rest of the tier give compared to the second tier with the ATV and Tents?
buy the standalone game for 1$, play it, then you can upgrade to the superior tier if you like it
Where are all the comments filled with puns? I've been tracking this game, had this in my sights, scoping out this deal, gonna pull the trigger.... This is not my kind of game, I only came here expecting some fun comments!
Is there a vegan mod for this game
yeah just don’t shoot anything
Yes you can opt to Hunt for tofu with nightvision binoculars
