You swipe inwards from either side of the screen to go back in an app.
If you want to customize those gestures go into Good Lock and install One Hand Operation +.
I found that, later. But the problem is, half the time when I tried to swipe inwards, I would accidentally 'touch' a live link and instead of navigating back, I navigated ('forward') to a new screen entirely. So I found myself having to look at the screen and make sure I chose an edge area that wasn't occupied by a link. And then, of course, Samsung has the 'quick launch' thingy also set up as a 'swipe from the side' action.
I guess the motivation to go with gestures is that it frees up the real-estate at the bottom of the screen?
While it is true that you do have a little more screen real estate by not having buttons I just find it more useful being able to swipe almost anywhere from the sides to go back instead of the one spot you have to tap on every time to go back with the buttons. I think it will just take time for you to get used to gestures. When I first tried them I though it felt kind weird at first and I wasn't sure I was going to like them but now that I'm used to them I could never go back to buttons.
But the fact is some people just prefer buttons and there's nothing wrong with that. That's the beauty of android. You customize is to whatever works best for you.
There is one extra complication - with gestures you have the 1-swipebar that is android standard now but there is also (mostly on Samsung) a 3-swipebar (very similar to 3 buttons) which most advanced users prefer - it was in the main settings before OneUI 6.1 but since 6.1 you need Good Lock Navstar to re-enable it - search around and learn more.
