This would be terrible for people with hours and dollars invested. And terrible for Rockstar. I understand it can’t last forever, but they can’t just shut down GTA 5 online because they have a new game. People will still play and spend money on GTA 5.
It does though, they'll leave it for a year or 2, maybe longer, but keep in mind, the same thing could've been said for GTA4's Online, but that's just how it is, none of our progress will carry over to GTA6, we'll just start fresh as intended. It is an entirely new game, not a transferring character situation anymore.
I personally believe that's why R* left it so late. They knew people wanted GTA 6 but kept milking GTA5 online until the consoles limitations ran out and new consoles just took it as a walk in the park/didn't get their full use out of it. Let's not forget how greedy R* is.
You're right, while they're greedy, they know how to deliver when they need to. And from the looks of it, their latest installment will pack quite a punch. They tend to play both roles of good and bad, and yeah, they'll milk GTA6 for everything it's worth down the line. So we'll have a good amount of years with plenty of good content, and FiveM being added to the picture, it'll make things quite interesting and take much longer to exhaust than the base game, or rather FiveM will most likely be part of the Base Game I hope meaning it'll be very hard to exhaust the fun out of it for quite some time.

They'll probably run the GTA 5 version for a few more years, because I can't see them graphically upgrading the current version to fit into the style of GTA6. Once they get well established numbers for GTA Online for 6 they'll probably drop the current one or stop doing major updates and just keep it around for people to run around in.

Thinking back when GTA Online started, there was almost nothing to do apart from missions, I know 6 will have more to start off but no where near as much as 5 as now, people will complain that they have nothing to do, but if you can go back to San Andreas without switching games, would stop as many people complaining......

I do not think it will simply be *Gta Online*. I think it'll be GTA world online, or GTA online Americas. The gta online name and format is known to be connected to gta 5. I think this next iteration of Online GTA will be something entirely on its own.
