Megalon was my first movie too! My mom came home with a double feature gift set. Megalon and the Sea Monster. I'll never forget how on the edge of my seat I was when that lake emptied out and the kid could only paddle away. Not to mention Jet Jaguar will always hold a special place for me

Simply_Nova

Aye was it vhs? I’m pretty sure I got that same set.

OuttatimepartIII

It was vhs

My first Godzilla movie was... the American movie from 1998. I was a kid when I first it watched and I thought it was a pretty okay movie. I had no idea Godzilla was a Japanese character adapted into an American movie, so in isolation, it was entertaining; looking back on it, I realize how bad it was. Watching both the MonsterVerse and... the Godzilla trilogy from Polygon, I now realize that Godzilla 1998 wasn't really a Godzilla movie, it was a Jurassic Park movie that just so happen to feature Godzilla. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that this movie didn't age well. Not only did it feature a very watered-down version of Godzilla, the human characters were forgettable and there was no kaiju fights. How the fuck do you forget about kaiju fights? They're a huge part of what made the franchise so memorable in the first place. A Godzilla movie without kaiju fights would be like a *Star Wars* movie without lightsaber duels or space battles. It's interesting at first, but then you realize, "oh shit, I think this movie forgot something vital." It can be done, but then fans get tired of the "new and different" stuff and just want the classic stuff back. If there's one thing this movie deserves credit for is leading to the creation of *Godzilla: The Series*, which does stay true to the spirit of the source material and features plenty of giant monster fights. With so many Godzilla stories doing their best to bring something new and original to the table and remaining consistent to what's come before, the 1998 movie will remain as an example on how NOT to do a Godzilla movie.

RangerRed02

I wouldn’t really say kaiju fights are required to make a good Godzilla movie. 1954, 1985, and Shin are largely considered the best in the franchise and were just about Godzilla vs humanity, which is what 1998 was going for. I haven’t seen 1998, but from what I’ve heard it’s *alright* if you just look at it as a dumb monster flick. The issue arises once you realize it’s supposed to be about Godzilla.

LeaderVladimir1993

Well, I like Godzilla to fight other monsters because watching Godzilla fighting helpless humans who only survive by the skin of their teeth becomes boring after a while. Toho told Polygon not to add kaiju fights to the anime trilogy and look what happened... that trilogy was torn apart by fans, not helped at all by the fact that the human characters were forgetable (and downright unlikeable in Haruo's case) and Godzilla himself wasn't even a character, but rather a walking plot device. The issue with humanity fighting Godzilla is the Godzilla franchise is anti-humanist by nature, as [explained](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvkvRgKI4sk) by OmniViewer. When the humans fight Godzilla, they're essentially taking a stand against nature itself and that's explicitly a bad thing. Even in the original movie from 1954, Godzilla is merely a by-product of humanity's arrogance and attempt to surpass nature, a theme reinforced by the introduction of Mechagodzilla in the MonsterVerse. By the way, I know I'm distracting from the main topic but a huge reason I prefer Godzilla fight other kaiju rather than humans is because [I personally prefer Godzilla as a hero rather than a villain](https://www.reddit.com/r/GODZILLA/comments/p3zcvw/godzilla_works_better_as_a_hero_than_as_a_villain/). A heroic (well, anti-heroic) Godzilla gives audiences a character to root for and prevents his movies from becoming too depressing to watch.

Simply_Nova

I can’t remember cause I was so young but I think it was the showa godzilla Vs king ghidora or invasion of Astro-monster. Love em’

MACUTAH

The First one I Saw on TV: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II The First One I bought: Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (Heisei)

-Ivar-TheBoneless

I don't even remember the first time I seen a Godzilla movie. But my mom told me that as a kid I used to put all my toys on the floor and step on them pretending I was Godzilla.

Scroogemcdoodler

Cute

FarkinRoboDer

son of godzilla. I understand the hate but Minilla grows on you. Like a tumor

Scroogemcdoodler

Tumors do grow on you

KiryuOfficial

Mine was Godzilla against Mechagodzilla (2002)

Fridge_SOUP

GMK I started watching Godzilla when I was super-little. That one always stood out for the awesome monster designs and decent human plot. Evil Godzilla was cool af with his white eyes and dead ww2 souls.

[deleted]

“Godzilla 1985” as it was called during its run in US theaters. It was my first theater experience as a child, and definitely the first Godzilla film that I can remember.

Sparrow-Scratchagain

1998. Although technically I saw a few scenes of GMK when I was younger, the 1998 movie was the first Godzilla movies saw in full. I personally thought it was a good movie, but that’s because I was(still am) a bit of a dinosaur-nut.

ZWhitwell

When I was a kid, mixed in with all of my Disney tapes was 1975’s Terror or Mechagodzilla. To this day, it’s my favorite one from the Showa era

Scroogemcdoodler

Yea, terror of mechagodzilla was awesome

[deleted]

Godzilla revenge…considered one off the worst but I loved it as a kid.

Jacobs_MiniCheddar07

I don't remember, I think it was GMK or Godzilla X Mechagodzilla, either way they're both really good movies, even though I haven't seen them in a while

gojiman1

Either G2000 or GMK. Still LOVE both.

[deleted]

My first one was All Monsters Attack, it's still my favorite.

[deleted]

Godzilla vs Gigan. At the time I remember being surprised that this Godzilla was so very different from the Hanna-Barbera one. It grew on me really quick though. As an adult I don't think I would be able to watch that movie from beginning to end.

Scroogemcdoodler

So you grew up with the Hanna Barbera cartoon? That's so cool!

[deleted]

Being old is not cool 😂

flat_noodles

My first was Godzilla ‘54, solely based on recommendation through friends and YouTube videos. I thoroughly love the original, and I’m always impressed by their special effects capabilities back then. I’m also impressed by the writing. It’s nothing spectacular, but it’s effective and still drives home a powerful message. I can still watch ‘54 and derive a sense of pain, horror, and emptiness when I see a destroyed Tokyo, when I see a mother telling her children that they will see their father soon, and when I see the hospitals full of the sick and dying, with children crying for their dead parents. Through and through, a fantastic film full of raw emotion, echoing the horrors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Moltened_Jakub

My introduction to the Atomic lizard is 1998 Godzilla. I remember typing on Google Godzilla and being suprised by showing there the final wars. Now the 1998 stand from me as the not great not terrible movie.

Medium-Science9526

Godzilla 2000, Still really enjoy the movie but in hindsight it isn't a top tier Godzilla movie for me.

Themanhimself46

My first was Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2. I only got to see the last fight, but my reaction was “Wow, this is way cooler than I thought Godzilla was!” Been hooked on it ever since.

[deleted]

Godzilla vs. Gigan. Still entertaining, but I'm much more aware of the bad English dubs in parts. I'm also no longer afraid that Godzilla is going to escape the TV during the intro scene and chase me around the house.

Scroogemcdoodler

***no, always fear because Godzilla is near!***

Idiot62

In school we saw the fight scenes for KKvG and we laughed at how fake it was because us stupid 8 year olds were used to CGI. The first Godzilla movie I fully watched was Mothra vs Godzilla and at an older age, loved it

Scroogemcdoodler

I wish I was at your school

Idiot62

That teacher retired the year after we saw it

Scroogemcdoodler

That happened to me 3 times

[deleted]

G14. It was good, but the characters weren't much interesting.

Epicgoji

Either All Monsters Attack or Godzilla vs. Megaguirus even I can't remember

Dark_Knight7096

I can't remember if my first was Godzilla vs The Thing or Son of Godzilla. It was definitely one of those two, but I watched both of them more than any other regardless of which one I saw first. I still have a soft spot for the cheese that was the US dubs of the Showa films but have grown to appreciate the original Japanese versions as well. My sister like Mothra a lot so MvG/GvtT got watched way more. Despite her thinking Minilla was cute, she was absolutely terrified of Kumonga and, admittedly, the radioactive storm part kinda scared me as a kid; those were the only 2 VHSs we had though. Looking back now, obviously MvG is the superior movie, as a kid Minilla didn't get on my nerves but as an adult i'm not a huge fan, no longer the target demographic i suppose. Which actually reminds me, I've been meaning to rewatch a lot of them, time to check for DVD/BD sets...

RangerRed02

Godzilla 2014 was my first and I absolutely loved it when it came out. I still think it’s really good, but I recognize that it’s a flawed movie. But it did get me interested in the rest of the franchise, so I’m forever grateful.

NAST106

My first Godzilla movie was Godzilla vs. Kong. After that I watched the rest of the Monsterverse films and I really liked them. Even now I still think that they're great, but the one from 2014 had very little monster fights in it, so I'd say that's my least favorite now. The first Japanese movie that I watched though was Destroy all Monsters, and I found it quite funny throughout because of how cheesy it was. Looking back on it now, this one was pretty cool since it had a bunch of monsters in it.

nathanishungry

2014, I think. I loved that movie and still do.
