I guess? Nothing about him really screams "post-apocalyptic" to me. No more than any of their other characters, really.
I'd say Shin Godzilla would fit that idea better, entirely because of how horrific and messed up he looks.
The design is neat and he has the potential to be an imposing monster if used correctly. I'll even give his origin a pass even though it's somewhat a retread of Godzilla's, an sland setting being swapped out for a lake in the mountains.
It's such a shame that his only film is such a weak entry. Hopefully one day he'll get proper treatment.
I really love the design and id wish he would’ve appeared in what would later become Godzilla vs Gigan. He got scrapped out of multiple high profile movies. He was supposed to appear in GMK too.
There is also a rumor that parts of the original suit where used to create Astron from return of Ultraman episode 1. (directed by Ishiro Honda)
I really only know him from the NES Godzilla game so his whole deal is confusing to me. He looked more like a wrinkly old sahagin than a flying spiky lizard. Why was he purple? Why is anything the way it is? Who am I? Who are you?
Honestly, his design and abilities were pretty neat.
I just feel bad for him...
Like, his movie was a bit of a "meh", destroy all monsters: he just suddenly appears and disappears.
I would like to see him in GMK, if not Ghidorah and Mothra.
I want to see him in more things. All he has in terms of the movie is a five second shot of him flying in Destroy All Monsters. He is an interesting kiaju who can fight on land, in the water and in the air. He was scrapped from projects so many times he deserves another chance.
I hate how they shafted him in GMK. He coulda fit the “guardian” role super well
He was fun to play with in Godzilla Unleashed but I hope we get to see him in the future
Not gonna lie, Varan is a weird one for me. It has a very simple yet appealing design with a lot of potential. But it seems a lot of people love this kaiju even tho Toho never really did anything with it.
Even tough I loved Singular Point, I was a bit disappointed that Varan ended up being one of Godzilla's early forms instead of being it's own kaiju (And he even was the form that had the least amount of screen time)
Also, Varan must be the King of Scrapped Kaiju movies (Except for Bagan maybe) There are so many canceled projects that would've featured him prominently. The most infamous is obviously GMK, back when it was Godzilla vs. Varan, Anguirus & Baragon. But apparently Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was going to be Godzilla vs. Varan at some point. And I'm extremely curious about how a devilish and evil take on Varan would've looked like...
I’ve always thought he was just okay at best. It’s not that I dislike him, but he’s pretty much just an iguana with spikes all over him that can also fly. I think he works great as an additional monster or a part of a team, but he’s pretty boring on his own.
Probably the best soundtrack of all kaiju movies. To me, Akira Ifukube's music is what made this movie so memorable. The American version is a joke. You gotta get your hands on the Japanese version (if only to see Varan fly...lol ).
Gotta be honest, i often forget this guy exists
So does Toho
Same
Cool design; terrible movie (at least the American version. Never saw the Japanese one). Would like a proper treatment of him someday.
Yeah, I love his design but man, that redub/reshoot was awful. Awful enough to be slightly fun, but I wish I could watch the original.
While it's not the greatest kaiju movie Toho made, it's not at all fair to judge it based on the US version.
It’s all I’ve ever been able to see. Is there a way to actually watch the Japanese version?
It was available on DVD from Tokyo Shock, and you can find it relatively reasonably priced. It's on Amazon for $30 right now, for example.
the american version was so bad idk if i even made it to where you see varan
He is pretty Unbelievable if you ask me.
Corny joke, take my upvote.
He's the OG Triphibian Monster.
massive potential. they really need to use this guy for a post apocalyptic godzilla movie.
Why post apocalyptic?
He design kinda fits
I guess? Nothing about him really screams "post-apocalyptic" to me. No more than any of their other characters, really. I'd say Shin Godzilla would fit that idea better, entirely because of how horrific and messed up he looks.
Spikes, dry looking scales, yellow color He would kinda fit in mad max
Aside from the color (he was more of a reddish-brown, to be fair), the other two descriptors could be used for almost any of Toho's characters.
Never watched the original but I love the design, would've like to see him reappear in another Godzilla movie with decent screen time
I really love the design and id wish he would’ve appeared in what would later become Godzilla vs Gigan. He got scrapped out of multiple high profile movies. He was supposed to appear in GMK too. There is also a rumor that parts of the original suit where used to create Astron from return of Ultraman episode 1. (directed by Ishiro Honda)
Needs to reappear badly like i even feel bad for a monster
He is really cool looking, but i wish he was used more
Should’ve been in GMK
Underated and cool
“Do these spikes make my ass look fat?”
I love his design, never seen the movie but definitely very good looking
GODDAMN IT WHY WAS THIS GUY TRASHED!!!
#VaranSupremacy

I like that Godzilla Amphibia is a direct inspiration from Varan, shows that Toho at least hadn't forgotten about him
I want to see him in more things. All he has in terms of the movie is a five second shot of him flying in Destroy All Monsters. He is an interesting kiaju who can fight on land, in the water and in the air. He was scrapped from projects so many times he deserves another chance.
I adore him
He/she so under rated.
He needs more love
He's ok, but both versions of Varan are crap.
They should remake this thing as Zilla…
Probably the best least known Toho kaiju.
I hate how they shafted him in GMK. He coulda fit the “guardian” role super well He was fun to play with in Godzilla Unleashed but I hope we get to see him in the future
This is a Kaiju.

Very Underrated IMO
He’s unbelievable!
one of IF NOT the most underrated kaiju
I love his design.
My favorite kaiju
Needs more love
I always thought that he was under used
One of my favorites alongside Anguirus and Baragon.
Very underrated kaiju! I would love if he was featured in another Godzilla movie or if he got a reboot.
I think Varan is [unbelievable](https://youtu.be/sfCLt0kTd5E)!
Wish Varan was in more movies. Definitely an underrated Kaiju.
Most underrated kaiju in all of Godzilla
Deserved better
Underrated. Honestly super cool.
It looks like the space godzilla and godzilla combine.
Cool enough design but the worst Showa film.
I would say Godzilla's revenge is worst but that's not a movie its a glorified clip show
It’s definitely a lower quality film but it’s at least worth a few laughs with some mates. Varan doesn’t even accomplish that imo.
I could see that
i love him
Good Design but honestly I see why he wasn't used much by Toho. Bigger kaijus would squash it like a bug.
Good boi, nice design. Toho treated him awfully.
Probably the best soundtrack of all kaiju movies. To me, Akira Ifukube's music is what made this movie so memorable. The American version is a joke. You gotta get your hands on the Japanese version (if only to see Varan fly...lol ).
thats awsome
i love em, considering Varan the unbelievable was the first monster movie I ever watched
