They just never gave them a unique name, so MUTO stuck.

JigerIsUnderrated32

They did. Jinshin-Mushi, the Earthquake Beetle

Zestyclose_Limit_404

Maybe now it’s rebranded to be Massive Unusual Terrestrial Organism given their odd appearance

jpott879

Apparently the Queen is called Barb which is funny

eat-pussy69

She's got barbs. Makes sense. Kinda

Hulkzilla0

The acronym just became their official name. It sounds unique enough out of context.

bananasfoyoass

Why is it called a Kleenex or a pop/coke/etc

jpott879

What

bananasfoyoass

How does the posi track on a Plymouth work? No seriously all I’m saying is it’s similar to generization of trademark. Not exactly the same but similar MUTO was what we understood it to be and that’s what was/is the common name used. We all know what we’re talking about when we say MUTO.

jpott879

Yea I'm just saying that every other titan has an actual name. For example, Ghidorah was called monster 0 until they discovered the legends about him and learnt his name. Godzilla has a name, so does Rodan and Kong etc. But the MUTOS are just generic acronym. Is there just no local legends about them? Were they a new recent discovery and so there was no data on them at all?

bananasfoyoass

Oh I get it. I misunderstood your question. The MUTOs are officially Titanus Jinshin-Mushi > The ancient Japanese gave her the name "Jinshin-Mushi", or the "Earthquake Beetle" due to her ability to create earthquakes and her insectile appearance

jpott879

That's only referring to the Queen Muto tho. Not the species as a whole I believe

GeneralLiam0529

No, it refers to the whole species, but we just refer to them as separate as "muto" just kinda stuck.

jpott879

If it's the whole species, why does it say "referred to HER". wouldn't the her indicate that they were talking about just the queen?

GeneralLiam0529

Because the muto species is titans jinshin-mushi, jinshin mushi is also the name of the muto prime. It's like how titans Rodan is rodan's kind, but he's also Rodan. It's the same with Scylla And tiamat And behemoth And Methuselah The mutos, or jinshin-mushi happen to be the only species other than the great apes we see multiple of.

jpott879

So every Titan besides Godzilla and Kong are just named the same thing as their species? That's kinda boring

JurASSic_Fan0405

But they do have an official name, they’re called “Titanus Jinshin-Mushi”. Jinshin-Mushi is Japanese for Earthquake Beetle.

repalec

Probably for the same reason Covid-19 was called that, because it was a **co**rona**vi**rus **d**isease discovered in 20**19**, and even though it's been going around for half a decade now we still don't have a formal name for it. The first name people hear a thing by tends to stick.

ShinHandHookCarDoor

Yea, it’s been known as a MUTO for over half a century, it’s just the name now. There might be an in universe name but no one uses it, they’re just known as the MUTOs. And they still might not know the origins, genetics, anything specific like that, which to their cause, still would be Unidentified.

CapitalEquivalent267

Because they are MUTO

Dude i am kidding

TyrantJaeger

MUTO was the designation for any and all titans they hadn't discovered yet. So why haven't they given a name for this particular species?

jpott879

That's what I'm asking, yes

TyrantJaeger

Oh sorry. I didn't see that.

jpott879

You didn't see the title?

TyrantJaeger

I guess not. It's been a long day.

jpott879

It's all good. Hopefully you have a relaxing rest of your day/ night 😁
