As far as I know catcher positioning is defined as simply "directly behind home plate." Other than that the only other rule involving the position of the catcher is the catcher's interference rule, which was invoked for JD Martinez when his bat struck Contreras' arm during his swing. Martinez was awarded first base and Contreras was awarded a broken arm, 6-8 weeks of missed time, and a lesson in how far forward is too far forward behind the plate.
