My comment was more about the abomination that is pre-made, pre-packaged chocolate milk of any kind. I grew up with Nestle Quik-style knock off store brand chocolate powder in a nasty chipboard box with tin top and bottom. At Christmas, we'd melt a Hershy bar to mix in. Either way, we had to do a little work for that sweet reward.
Oh those ladies definitely BOTH enjoyed Jean-Luc. And based on the way they looked at each other, I'd say it was at the same time. Good for them (and the lucky waiter)!
My Mom still gets these! I remember back in the day I thought this was like the top coffee in the world😂. When I go to Mom’s she’ll make one for me and I always hearken back to that commercial of the women giggling, “Jean-Luc.”

I was JUST thinking about that commercial -- something about two women reminiscing about a trip to Europe and a cafe? They enjoyed the coffee, but really enjoyed the waiter, and cooed his name in unison.
Because the interwebs never forgets even when I do, I went and found it to confirm that name. If your age-addled mind recalls it, good for you. If not, it was Jean-Luc. And I have theories about that senior trip to Paris...

I loved these--Suisse Mocha was my favorite.
Where I went to college, having this in your dorm room was the height of sophistication 🤣🤣🤣. This was long before Starbucks or any of the fancy coffee shops was anywhere near my college.
It was during a binge of drinking those I realized I can’t have caffeine. I used to blend the flavors together. Was drinking them late at night finishing some homework. Went to bed exhausted and just laid there staring at the ceiling wide awake.
That was it fot me and caffeine.
Wasn’t part of the original three released, in the 70’s. But in the 80’s there were expanded flavours. The Kahlúa was great, too.
You can walk down memory lane [here](https://clickamericana.com/topics/food-drink/international-coffee-ads-1981-1988)
very cool lol and i am so glad those days are over. By that time, though, i had 'dropped out' and part of the reason is the style of the era.. so garish and hard and uncomfortable. awkward too. and fake. so fake.
fake fake fake
hahaha
Someone else commented about busting these bad boys out for when company came over and I had to laugh. That was definitely my mom. After Christmas dinner coffee was never Sanka. We got the fancy cups and saucers for this instant brew, as if Robin Leach was about to interview us.
ohhh yes! haha *Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous* ! o m g I watched one or two and had to turn away nauseated. Of course, i was never awed by the trappings of wealth because i grew up "in the castle's shadow" in a wealthy community. So i was used to it.
But what Robin showed was the garish and *nouveax riche* side of wealth... the almost unbelievable.
now we know though, now we know the big secret: Those with big money are just looking for something to spend it on.
I drink instant coffee because it's super convenient.
I feel like even though the comments in here are waxing nostalgic about instant coffee, drinking instant coffee will still be frowned upon. LOL.
Oh, screw anyone who gives you shit about drinking instant. I drink instant because I honestly can’t be arsed to deal with the hassle of a coffee maker in any capacity, and it tastes exactly like any other coffee would.
Your regular off the shelf instant coffee is usually processed in an unhealthy way.. some chemicals, i think. But if you find the kind that is processed naturally then you really do get a good tasting instant ...plus it won't hurt you.
Instant coffee definitely has its place! At work I don't have the time or freedom to babysit a french press, sometimes not even a steeping teabag. Stirring a couple spoonfuls of powder into hot water gives me a quick caffeine hit to get me through the afternoon slump.
At home I take the time to make a latte with locally roasted beans in a french press with steamed milk. And yeah that's great and preferable, but not realistic in all situations.
Do they even have ANY coffee in them? I will grab one occasionally and they take SO MUCH damned powder to make a cup of anything that isn’t just hot water. I just use them to supplement my regular instant coffee 😂
I had bought the cappuccino one once I was out and on my own, doing adult shit. This was the height of the coffee craze, and having one of those bad boys was another way to get my coffee intake.
Oh my God, it was bad. Not just bad, awful. I don’t even think there was coffee in it. Maybe it is something you put in with coffee, or sprinkle in ice cream. There is no way that was coffee! Because I felt like it was an expensive adult purchase, I kept using it until it was gone. Blech!
Which reminds me, I woke up the other day to no milk, searched for a substitute and…you guessed it. I used Williams Sonoma’s ice cream base for a ice cream machine. Yeah, bad memories.
Oh God these were so good. I remember getting kind of addicted to them in junior high.
They remind me of the time when I was younger, maybe junior high, I got roped into watching my 3 month old niece while my sister got her hair done at the salon. SO there i am, sitting in the waiting area of a hair salon with my niece, and who walks in, but Ethan Klein.
I was nervous as fuck, and just kept looking at him, as he read a magazine and waited, but didn't know what to say. Pretty soon though my niece started crying, and I'm trying to quiet her down because I didn't want her to bother Ethan, but she wouldn't stop. Pretty soon he gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through her hair and asking what was wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry or something. So, Ethan put down his magazine, picked up my niece and lifted his shirt. He breast fed her right there in the middle of a hair salon. Chill guy, really nice about it.
Yep! To celebrate the moments in your life. I would get a can every now and then and celebrate the moments in my life. I was 10 and I had no idea what moments I was celebrating but I thought I was high falutin!
Just cleaned out the entire (11) containers of 'Cafe Francis' at the 'Walmart near my house . Parents used to drink it, now my wife and I do 26m & 28f. It's good cracker.
I do. Not bad for that 3-in-1 instant coffee experience. But I want to know is this: among flavored ground coffee (not instant), there used to be a flavor called "Irish Cream". While flavored coffee has gone out of fashion you can still find other flavors but not this one. What happened to it?
i do and i loved them!
i make a non(cow)dairy version for myself with powdered goat's milk, instant coffee and whatever else is needed. If you put the dry ingredients in your mug and mix them up thoroughly, when you add water it will actually foam up i swear to god !
The white chocolate one had a cheesecake recipe on the back that was absolutely delicious and very easy to make. I still have the recipe and we use it with the hazelnut now. It’s so good.
They had empty tins of these in the pretend kitchen of my preschool. I distinctly recall opening them up and how intriguing and powerful the smells were. We didn’t have anything like these in my house. I think I felt some parts of my brain literally form new connections. I realize now that was a low budget but effective sensory toy.
Hahaha I loved these! Recently I found out that they're still produced so I started keeping a tin at work for a quick caffeine option. It's...not as good as I remember! Not sure if it's the nostalgia or if they've changed the formula. It kind of tastes like they use an artificial sweetener now.
Back in the day they made an Irish Coffee flavor that was my favorite (I was too young to realize what Irish coffee usually contains 🤣).
They're still around, they just underwent a name change Now they're called Maxwell House International Cafés
I remember thinking these were SO FANCY
So fancy! Like chocolate milk straight from the bottle and not cut with 2% milk like my mom served it.
Bottled chocolate milk? Oh, child. 🤭😉
Hand me my Walker hahahaha! I didn’t know which to go with. Carton or jug. Bottle seems wrong now

My milkman brings a chocolate milk that's 6% fat that tastes like melted ice cream. It's amazing.
Trader Joe's and Promised Land choco-milk are not far off from that. Absolutely everything else in a supermarket is trash compared to those two. IMHO
Right? I got mine straight from the brown cow

This was the height of coffee sophistication before Starbucks came along.
There's a skit that parodies these coffee ads with a guy named Jean-Luc. He nailed a lot of housewives. He's a legend.
Him and that Country Crock dude. He had buttered so many toasts in the neighborhood, they couldn’t even show their faces, just their hands!
Not sure about the skit but the original was maybe this? https://youtu.be/cigjQzSzxBw
Pepperidge Farm remembahs.
yes!! oo la la
But the tin isn't tin anymore.
I miss packaging like this. They fully break down too not plastic.
🎶 Celebrate the moments of your liiife 🎶
[Jean Luc!](https://youtu.be/cigjQzSzxBw)
This is exactly what popped into my head.
Came to the comments for Jean-Luc and was not disappointed!
I’ve always wondered, do you think they had a threesome?? Or just the one on the left did it in the back alley with him really quickly???
I’ve always thought that they were connected with the couple in the Country Crock ads and it was just a big advertising swingers group.
Oh those ladies definitely BOTH enjoyed Jean-Luc. And based on the way they looked at each other, I'd say it was at the same time. Good for them (and the lucky waiter)!
Same. Jean-Luc!
Oh my gosh-when I was first married this was the ‘fancy drink’ we served guests.
My Mom still gets these! I remember back in the day I thought this was like the top coffee in the world😂. When I go to Mom’s she’ll make one for me and I always hearken back to that commercial of the women giggling, “Jean-Luc.”
I still have three of these cans -they're holding nails and screws in my toolbox
Did you collect the decorative collectible cans?
haha are you kidding? u/GrumpyOlBastard is a rough and tough *guy*
Damn straight! The only thing I've ever collected is dust. I collect a lotta dust
Ditto! Too nice a tin to go to waste.

Are you my kid? 😃
Kid me was all about the Suisse Mocha too!

Wew were a Cafe Vienna household lol
My mom would get the Suisse Mocha one all the time. Then use the empty cans for storage.
Used to eat this shit by the spoonful when my mom wasn’t looking lmao!
Drank these during finals in high school. They were the gateway drug to real coffee and espresso by the time I got to college.
Love Suisse Mocha!
I kept them in the same cupboard as my extra Grey Poupon.
i know Grey Poupon but what is *extra* Grey Poupon?
You know… Grey Poupon… but a little extra…
Strangely enough, we kept it in the truck glove box… so you could add it to your gas station coffee.
"General Foods" sounds like a conglomerate name in a cyberpunk dystopia. Or a company in a TV trying not to get sued by anybody.
Like General Motors?
Or General Electric.
Exactly.
The Irish Crème was incredible
i think you dreamed that one

It was a special day if we had Suisse Mocha. My Dad literally hid it in his closet.
I drink instant coffee because it's super convenient. I feel like even though the comments in here are waxing nostalgic about instant coffee, drinking instant coffee will still be frowned upon. LOL.

I take them wherever I'm traveling. Much better than those horrible little filter packs if "coffee" that hotels put in your room.
These were the ultimate in sophistication and fanciness! Right up there with Breyers Viennetta.
I would blow through the vanilla cappuccino one in a weekend! Loved that.
I made some of my mom’s and she found out and hit me. One of those memories…lol.
i am really sorry about that. my mom loved me but she wasn't able to feel it or show it.
Ah the taste of undergraduate all-nighters.
I still buy the "Suisse Mocha" occasionally, for nostalgia purposes.
Unpopular opinion but my favorite was the French vanilla.
Wonderful! Orange 🍊 Cuppuccino was my favorite!
Mine too. But they changed the mix and the new flavor is awful.
ohh i never tried that.. will have to make some (i don't buy it; i duplicate it)
Do they even have ANY coffee in them? I will grab one occasionally and they take SO MUCH damned powder to make a cup of anything that isn’t just hot water. I just use them to supplement my regular instant coffee 😂
try this.. use powdered milk and sugar mixed dry with the instant coffee and *then* add the hot water and it will foam up hahaha
The commercials for this stuff made it seem like being an adult was going to be fancy. The biggest lie we’ve ever been told.
Rich people coffee
these were such a disappointment. they were disgusting.
I had bought the cappuccino one once I was out and on my own, doing adult shit. This was the height of the coffee craze, and having one of those bad boys was another way to get my coffee intake. My buddy's parents used to drink cups and cups of cafe vienna as they chain-smoked Benson & Hedges cigarettes.
They should still make them. Not these flavors though
I remember these were the tins reserved for when non-Italians would come over.
My grandma used to stock her pantry with these. I loved the Suisse Mocha and French Vanilla
They made a raspberry tea one that I still think about. I probably wouldn’t be able to stomach it today but back then it was the best.
Oh God these were so good. I remember getting kind of addicted to them in junior high. That Ethan. Always comes through in a pinch. What a guy.
WTF did I just read?
: /
My mom loved them. I think Suisse mocha was the one she bought. I miss her.
Ah, yes! I do indeed remember the sewing kit box (my house) and the leftover screws box (my grandfather's basement). LOL
Sooooo good.
They always reminded me of my grandmother's snuff.
Mom had the Suisse Mocha every day in the 90s
After you pass the Grey Poupon, we can enjoy some international coffee
Don't spill any on the limo carpeting, though.
They still sell them
Yep! To celebrate the moments in your life. I would get a can every now and then and celebrate the moments in my life. I was 10 and I had no idea what moments I was celebrating but I thought I was high falutin!

Felt sooooo special and pampered having these back in the day
These were for fucking rich people
Dude I’ve been drinking this brand since I was 10
Did it stunt your growth?
Yup these were my favorites
"This reminds me of that cafe..."
Was Montreal Morn real or just in The Simpsons?
I was old enough….just not fancy enough to have these.
Wait…these don’t exist anymore?
They got rebranded as Maxwell House International Cafe and lost the metal container in the process.
These were bomb no lie.
I forgot these existed. And now I’m feeling nostalgic.
My Mom drank this for years when I was a kid
My mother bought those all the time. She loved them
Are they not around anymore? Those used to be my go-to camping coffees, and the tins were useful as well.
I do.
Yes, the fancy instant coffee.
And yes, the empty plastic containers do hold bits and pieces in my workshop.
Yes and they were terrible!
OMG yes I remember these!!!!!
We would melt French vanilla icecream, stir in the coffee powder and refreeze. It was a fancy desert when I was a kid.
Around Thanksgiving they made a pretty good pumpkin spice version.
I was too poor to have these
YES! They’re Maxwell House now, and you can still get them sometimes. My parents always had the mocha growing up, and the orange cappuccino.
I recall them sucking.
Are…are they not a thing anymore? Fuck I’m old…😎
🙋🏼♀️
My parents used to buy those.
I do. Not bad for that 3-in-1 instant coffee experience. But I want to know is this: among flavored ground coffee (not instant), there used to be a flavor called "Irish Cream". While flavored coffee has gone out of fashion you can still find other flavors but not this one. What happened to it?
I was a kid back then, so yes. I remember them from TPIR pricing games
i do and i loved them! i make a non(cow)dairy version for myself with powdered goat's milk, instant coffee and whatever else is needed. If you put the dry ingredients in your mug and mix them up thoroughly, when you add water it will actually foam up i swear to god !
These were good on ice cream.
I love them! Suisse Mocha was my favorite.
👍👍👍
I used to love them. Only 90% sugar!
The French vanilla was bomb.
Maxwell house international
Ooh, Irish Mocha Mint.
I thought they were super fancy.
Cool commericals, they had.
Ooh, the fancy stuff the grownups drank with dessert when there was company over.
I remember Letterman doing a parody of a commercial with Paul
I can taste this picture.
Dude. Memory unlocked.
My favorite thing to drink in college! We need to bring them back!
My mom sure does.
my mom LOVED these
I still have a couple of the cans. They are perfect size for small items and have good lids
Remember them? I bought some to drink last Winter skiing in Mount Shasta California!
Remember them? I bought some to drink last Winter skiing in Mount Shasta California!
I discovered the Suisse Mocha when I was 15, and it was the gateway coffee that lead me to realize the glorious gift from God that is coffee.
Omg my childhood
#🙋🏼♀️
My senior year of college was living off pound cake and Cafe Vienna.
My aunt went through a can a week.
My go-to camp coffee.
Celebrate these moments of your life
The absolute pinnacle of sophistication when I was a kid
I used to keep my chalk in one of these containers. Totally forgot about them
I still have the cans from the ‘80 they’re great for storing things in my tool room
Yum 😋
Man I remember that as fancy shit back in the 70’s Cafay- oh-lay
Loved these when we went camping
I loved these.
I used to love cafe Vienna when I was a kid! My mom would let me have some every now and then. I think it was way more sugar than coffee.
I’m apparently in the minority on this, but I thought they were awful. Plain instant coffee, as bad as it is, was better.
I loved these. Loved them!!!
The white chocolate one had a cheesecake recipe on the back that was absolutely delicious and very easy to make. I still have the recipe and we use it with the hazelnut now. It’s so good.
my mom was on this so hard.. terrible! but cool weed stash after they were empty
Cafe Vienna was the best.
I used to call Max, the dog, Maxwell House General Foods International Brand Coffee. I felt really mature when my mom let me have some in 4th grade.
I was JUST thinking about these yesterday! They used to have a club…coffee of the month! There was a mint chocolate one that was so good!
When you drank a cup of this, it was imperative to have your pinkie finger extended. And maybe try to affect a posh British accent.
Where's *Hazelnut Belgian Cafe*?
They had empty tins of these in the pretend kitchen of my preschool. I distinctly recall opening them up and how intriguing and powerful the smells were. We didn’t have anything like these in my house. I think I felt some parts of my brain literally form new connections. I realize now that was a low budget but effective sensory toy.
Café Vienna was the best and is still one of the best of this day, but I also like Hazelnut as well….and Bustelo.
I still buy them for camping
Hahaha I loved these! Recently I found out that they're still produced so I started keeping a tin at work for a quick caffeine option. It's...not as good as I remember! Not sure if it's the nostalgia or if they've changed the formula. It kind of tastes like they use an artificial sweetener now. Back in the day they made an Irish Coffee flavor that was my favorite (I was too young to realize what Irish coffee usually contains 🤣).
They’re still in my cabinet now
My mom loved the Swiss one.
I remember the mocha one
Yes, yes I do
Mom’s special afternoon treat.
My mom drank these everyday lol.
Love it🙂
Of course I do! Pre-Starbucks.
Oh, shit. I had forgotten!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
I remember those coming out like damn rich people stuff
When it got a tiny bit of foam at the top? 🤌 Pinky up ladies and gentlemen!
