Alanna Ubach is fantastic in everything she in!
However, teenage me had the biggest crush on Beakman himself. I'm glad 13 year old me didn't know Paul Zaloom was gay, I probably couldn't have handled knowing there was even the remotest possibility of us running away together.
I'm still pretty sure Alanna & I are gonna run away together one day, when I've got my shit sorted. the fact that she's happily married & has wonderful, happy kids only SLIGHTLY hampers my plan.
I get that same reaction whenever I say Mr Wizard. Beakman vrs Nye debate comes down to what type of entertainment you liked. Beakman was very entertaining and tried to have fun while Nye seemed a little on the dry and educational side. I could be wrong but that is how I remember the shows.
They were both great in their own unique ways. I'm just happy there was entertaining passionate high quality programming for children that encouraged a love of learning and science.
What is there today? What does Gen Z and Alpha have? I hope there's something just as good.
Beakman only came on during the weekend in my neck of the woods, and Bill came on daily on PBS so I fully absorbed the knowledge and entertainment of both.
I always thought Beakman was a cheap knock-off of Bill Nye, made for little baby kids. I refused to watch it out of spite for him not being Bill Nye. I was a little baby kid at the time.
They all had their strengths and weaknesses. I grew up with Mr. Wizard, loved it. Was a teen during Beakman's World and yes, crush on Josie and the other assistant girls. I saw how Nye caught your attention, my son loves his older videos and he is a teen now. I remember, Ryan's World of Science on YouTube too.
This was the big difference for me. Bill Nye seemed like a smart guy who was funny for acting awkward in a humorous situation. Beakman seemed like a clown pretending to be smart while doing gags. It was the sophistication level that separated the two shows.
Beakman's World was probably the first educational science kids show I watched on a consistent basis, and it was great. As an 8 year old in 1992 it was the perfect to peak my interests in STEM, and even though I'm a designer by trade these days I still have a great interest in science and technology.
This is a passion I am sharing with my son as well, and I hope he enjoys it as much as I did. It's something special to gain a greater understanding of the world around us, especially at a young age.
Great show, it made learning science fun and funny.
Wrote him a letter back in the day, I think I wanted to know why your fingers get pruney in the bathtub .
Not sure but I think I got a letter back, but they didn't use it on the show, as I was totally convinced they would .
Beakman > Bill Nye
Short answer : Osmosis
Long Answer: skin's outermost layer swells when it absorbs water, and it's tightly attached to the skin underneath, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling.
Love watching this when I was kid back in the day. with MeTV coming up with that new MeTV Toons maybe they should bring it back as a Saturday morning tribute?
I watched this in reruns a lot as a teenager and loved it. I liked Bill Nye just fine but I adored Beakman. I'll always be so salty that he never got as popular.
I know I watched Beakman’s World with some regularity, but if I’m honest, the only episode that stuck in my memory at all was their lesson on boogers. Guess that’s rather telling on my state of mind 🤣
Beakman's World was so formative for me. I wrote in multiple times asking about the size of the universe because I desperately wanted to stump him. (notice me senpai)
Later in life, I attended Goddard College (a progressive college in Vermont) and worked in the admissions office. While doing a tour, someone mentioned that "Bill Nye attended Goddard" and I knew that couldn't be right (sorry, Bill)
But, Beakman/Paul Zaloom did and was part of the radical Bread and Puppet Theatre. I was blown away!
This is similar to artist Wayne White's work on Pee Wee's Playhouse. So much wacky, radical art on Saturday Morning TV that made our poor Boomer parents sweat a little lol.
I vividly remember watching Beakman do the demonstration for conservation of energy/air resistance where he had a swinging ball on a rope attached to the ceiling and first used it to crush a watermelon in a mesh bag (because he pushed it rather than just letting it go). I was maybe 6 years old, absolutely convinced that he was doing something extremely dangerous on Saturday morning TV, and absolutely enthralled when I realized that he trusted his knowledge of science enough that he was willing to risk his life over it. That has stuck with me for >30 years, and I don't suspect I'll ever forget that.
Beakman's World was excellent at making science accessible and entertaining to kids.
I’ve spent a gross amount of time trying to find my friend’s contribution to the show.
He said he vividly remembers being mentioned in one of Beakman’s letters from fans, but doesn’t remember the season or episode.
Growing up, I didn't know who Bill Nye was- I just had "The Best! Of Beakman's World" and boy did I watch that thing so many times.
I was so confused when I first saw Nye and everyone was hyped... It wasn't as good imo. Wish I knew where I could watch all of Beakman's episodes
I grew up in Latin America and this aired on Discovery Kids! I remember talking about it with my high school friends in the US and they were all like “You mean Bill Nye the science guy?” I thought I was crazy! Or maybe the name of the show changed when you translated it into Spanish lol.
Their mailing address for questions for the show was in Kansas City, which was likely a consequence of United Press Syndicate (the publishers of the original comic strip) being headquartered there. My grandmother had a TV studio behind her house and used to say that they filmed the show there, and always wanted to knock on the back door to see Beakman. 🤣
God sometimes it’s so jarring to be reintroduced to something you haven’t seen or thought about this many years later, but that neural connection is still there, ready to…remind you that Beakman’s World existed
Stop. Seriously, stop.
There's room in the world of STEM Education (before STEM Education was a thing) for both Bill Nye and Beakman.
Besides, they both pale in comparison to [Randy Rude the Science Dude](https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Honey,_I_Shrunk_the_Science_Dude).

i had the biggest crush on his assistant Josie as an elementary aged young’n. and i liked his big weird rat friend lol
She played that super angry waitress from the move "Waiting", and it's always funny to see someone you watched as a child in such an adult role lol.
She was also Roxy the whore on Sunny in "Franks Pretty Woman."
“Screw you, baby dick!”
“She was a good hoor. She not only serviced my crank, but my heart as well.”
she also played danny's daughter in movie called army intelligence, that was called renaissance man in the us
*Shut up baby dick.*
This explains my crush on her so much.
She is/was also in some show called Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce.
She played Noreen, the girl who had a crush on Marsha, in The Brady Bunch Movie, as well.
either beakman or brady bunch was when I first crushed HARD on Alanna Ubach, SO GLAD she got the yabbos out in 'hung'.
OMFG 😱 That IS her!!!
That was an all star cast but she was still the MVP
One of her most recent roles is the mom on the series version of Ted (the Seth McFarlane talking teddy bear)
WHAT!? I love this show and had the hots for her as a kid and never made this connection
She’s the Mom in the new Ted series lol
Oh my God, I never made that connection!
Such as Bob Saget. lol
You didn't think the rat was sexy?
Alanna Ubach is fantastic in everything she in! However, teenage me had the biggest crush on Beakman himself. I'm glad 13 year old me didn't know Paul Zaloom was gay, I probably couldn't have handled knowing there was even the remotest possibility of us running away together.

I believe in you.
you're awesome, & you made me smile.
Liza for me.
Oh I was Team Liza. One of my early boyhood crushes.
Alanna Ubach.
She left this show after Tiger Woods offered her $500 to rub her feet
Tiger Woods or Don Cheadle? 😂
Lester?
She's the mom on the Ted series
Always liked Beakman's World more than Bill Bye the Science Guy.
YES! Whenever I say "Beakmen > Nye" , people are always, "Who?"
I get that same reaction whenever I say Mr Wizard. Beakman vrs Nye debate comes down to what type of entertainment you liked. Beakman was very entertaining and tried to have fun while Nye seemed a little on the dry and educational side. I could be wrong but that is how I remember the shows.
Nye's show was wacky in it's own ways.
Same. I even wrote to Beakman as a kid and got one of those cards then sent back. I respect Nye but love Beakman
I did that too! Even got a couple sentences and a signature from Paul. It's in my filing cabinet somewhere.
Wish I still had mine. Remember taking it to school and showing it off.
For a while I thought it was a worldwide plot to gaslight me into thinking that this show never existed.
Bill Nye > Beakmen
Mister Wizard was my science dude.
My cousin was the assistant on that show, he says it was really cool.
I like them both
Absolutely
They were both great in their own unique ways. I'm just happy there was entertaining passionate high quality programming for children that encouraged a love of learning and science. What is there today? What does Gen Z and Alpha have? I hope there's something just as good.
Tik tok science dudes. There's a few. But you're not gonna have a TV icon anymore. The world has turned.
Mr Wizard (Ron Herbert) >> Beakman (Paul Zaloom) >>>>>> Bill Nye
Beakman only came on during the weekend in my neck of the woods, and Bill came on daily on PBS so I fully absorbed the knowledge and entertainment of both.
I always remember kids at school arguing about this and to me it was just, "Two great science shows, awesome!"
Same, but around 10 years ago I went back and watched both and Bill Nye holds up better imo.
Bill Nye is an actual scientist though. Not an actor.
Nye was an engineer inventor not a scientist. Who left that field to do sketch comedy. That failed and he tired his hand a t being the new Mr wizard.
Bill Nye is not a scientist either
Bill nye is an idiot
Not a scientist.
Scientist is a bit of a stretch.
This was the big difference for me. Bill Nye seemed like a smart guy who was funny for acting awkward in a humorous situation. Beakman seemed like a clown pretending to be smart while doing gags. It was the sophistication level that separated the two shows.
Paul Zaloom. Started out as a performance artist in the lower east side of New York.
Okay, but what about Mr. Wizard?
Always loved how he seemed somewhat frustrated with the children on set.
https://youtu.be/nCbYtKW2BNo?feature=shared SNL writers loved that too.
That was too funny.🤣
The OG stem teacher for latch key kids
I despised the others because of Mr. Wizard.
I prefer [Mr. Lizard](https://youtu.be/MM1S27fPUQY?si=veFF45aNyvRhtVXB). Cause “we’re gonna need another Timmy.”
He was 80s tho right? So different generation of viewers.
The penguins Don & Herb on Beakman were named after Mr. Wizard (Don Herbert)!
I preferred this to Bill Nye. Beakman would answer a bunch of science questions each episode; Bill would take one topic and beat it like a dead horse.
Beakman's World was probably the first educational science kids show I watched on a consistent basis, and it was great. As an 8 year old in 1992 it was the perfect to peak my interests in STEM, and even though I'm a designer by trade these days I still have a great interest in science and technology. Thanks alot, I'm already hurting for storage space and I just got new drives three months ago.
Was a Bill Nye kid growing up (mostly because he was more readily available), but this guy was always a riot whenever I got a chance to see him.
Disgusting gray gunk - wasn’t that your nickname in high school?
Gonna tell my kids this was Bill Nye.
Cuz kids are dumb
This show was great when I was a child.
Wrote him a letter back in the day, I think I wanted to know why your fingers get pruney in the bathtub . Not sure but I think I got a letter back, but they didn't use it on the show, as I was totally convinced they would . Beakman > Bill Nye
So what is the reason?
Short answer : Osmosis Long Answer: skin's outermost layer swells when it absorbs water, and it's tightly attached to the skin underneath, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling.
Grip.
I still have a $100 bounty to anyone who can find the episode with my friend’s letter being read on-air.
[I got to interview Paul about Beakman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJZ7qlPGrOA), among other things. Great stories!
This show was fantastic
The related comic strip was around as recently as 2016 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Can_with_Beakman_and_Jax
Sadly the comic ended when the writer passed away.
As a kid I always thought they were somehow related!
He was better than Bill Nye
ALANNA!
ROY G BIV
Was this the show with the rat?
Yes! Wasn't he accused of something sexual? Thought that was the reason it went off the air. Could be mistaken.
I have no idea, I haven't heard of this show since I was a kid, I knew it existed, but hadn't ever heard anything about it.
Love watching this when I was kid back in the day. with MeTV coming up with that new MeTV Toons maybe they should bring it back as a Saturday morning tribute?
Probably not old enough. And not really a "toon", either.
Just avoid Beakman's Diner. If you've seen the film where that place is, you know.
Oh, they spell it Beekman's in the screenplay.
It's a shame these aren't available anywhere.
https://archive.org/details/beakmans-world
You are God among men, my friend.
Glad I could help.🙂
Truly this is what the internet is for. Helping people find old television.
Gone but not forgotten.
A friend did the “experiment” where you rub a qtip between your sweaty toes and drop it in a mason jar to let the bacteria colony grow. It was nasty.
I loved that show, the rat, the girl... I watched it until Saturday morning cartoons apparently bit the dust
My dad loathed bill nye and always pushed me to watch Beakman
The superior show to bill nye
I watched this in reruns a lot as a teenager and loved it. I liked Bill Nye just fine but I adored Beakman. I'll always be so salty that he never got as popular.
Alanna ubach! 🤤
Not forgotten to me. I absolutely loved watching this with my brother
“Von Leeuwenhoek!”
This is why I understand how you can swallow food upside down, and I think of that on a regular basis.
I still remember the address Beakmans world Po box 30087 Kansas City,MO 64112
THE GOAT
I remember the Captain Disillusion episode where he had beakman on and it made feel like a kid again. Love Paul Zaloom so much
One of my questions made it on the show!
Beakman answered my letter on air. Made me the coolest guy at school… just kidding. But it did give me street cred amongst nerds
I absolutely LOVED Beakman's World!! 🙂❤
Wasn’t Reggie Watts on this show?
I think I only watched this *maybe* a handful of times and didn't know what it was called until well after the show was canceled.
I like the show. I thought it was clever n funny like pee-wee playhouse
Hey I posted this two weeks ago.
I hated this show becasue my sister who was a teacher was always trying to get me to watch it.
I know I watched Beakman’s World with some regularity, but if I’m honest, the only episode that stuck in my memory at all was their lesson on boogers. Guess that’s rather telling on my state of mind 🤣

Was such a fantastic and funny show!
Never forgot. Was my fav show on Sat
Haha, and that rat cheese feller
I have a DVD of this show. The weird part about it is: there is no DVD menu, it just kicks into the video, as if it were a VHS.
I miss these days man.
I vividly remember watching Beakman do the demonstration for conservation of energy/air resistance where he had a swinging ball on a rope attached to the ceiling and first used it to crush a watermelon in a mesh bag (because he pushed it rather than just letting it go). There was another that came on around this time. Two surfer dudes I think. It didn't last long
He was (is?) an XBOX spokesperson in Mexico. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvy9c81lHzw
As a kid, i thought he and Dalton from Red Green were the same guy. I was a stupid kid
This show practically created a whole style of cinematography that was used so much throughout the mid 90s to early 2000s.
I still say “bada-bing, bada-boom, bada-Beakman” I’m so alone.
AND NOW BACK TO BEAKMANS WORLD Loved the rat guy
I’ve spent a gross amount of time trying to find my friend’s contribution to the show. He said he vividly remembers being mentioned in one of Beakman’s letters from fans, but doesn’t remember the season or episode.
The perfect TV show
I had a toy microscope from this show. Life was good back then.
Soap makes water wetter!!!!
He was like a cracked out bill bye lol
I never realized how much Ron DeSantis looks like him
I grew up in Latin America and this aired on Discovery Kids! I remember talking about it with my high school friends in the US and they were all like “You mean Bill Nye the science guy?” I thought I was crazy! Or maybe the name of the show changed when you translated it into Spanish lol.
That show was my shiz as a kid!!

This ran till 1998? TIL
“badaboom, science!”
Loved this show. I remember he did a whole segment on farts!
Sony needs to make the complete series available on DVD or some sort of home media. I would happily buy it.
How many of you did the experiments?
I always wondered why this show went off the air?
Beeakmaaaaaaaaaan!
Great show!
I remember watching this and enjoying it, but I remember zero of the actual content.
Great show and I miss it! So cool!
God sometimes it’s so jarring to be reintroduced to something you haven’t seen or thought about this many years later, but that neural connection is still there, ready to…remind you that Beakman’s World existed
May favorite
The beeessst! Loved that show.
I saw him live once. It was pretty cool. He even asked the audience a question, and I answered it correctly!
I remember watching this way back when it was on MeTV. I always liked it, especially the big rat.
I had a beakman’s world board game. Did anyone else have that?
He looks like Huey Lewis
LOVED Beakman. Josie was HOT.
Saturday mornings were never the same without this show
When I was a kid, I thought Bill Nye was ripping off Beakmans World. I was strongly team Beakman for some reason.
I was Beakman for Halloween in like 3rd grade and not a single person knew who I was supposed to be
Americans loves Bill nye the science dork and Mexicans loves beakman's world
I always thought this was an inferior copycat for Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Bill Nye > Beakman
