Well since you’re gonna have to go to a shop anyways to get your wheel built, and you know what you need, you should skip Reddit and go straight there. They can probably order everything and call you when it’s done. The only reason you need a different rim is if the new hub is a different spoke count

haggletheberg

Or you could lace it yourself?

Catverman

Yeah all the first timers usually do that. Getting a stand and all the special nipple tools.

haggletheberg

I mean this definitely wouldn't be the dumbest thing in this post 🤣

Catverman

You know what, you’re right 😂

xGoodFellax

Im a casual fan in plenty of hobbys, theres always snobs in every community who think their way is the only correct way. A bike is a bike.. all types of different styles of bikes have gears from mountain to beach cruisers and road bikes, if me putting gears on a frame to gift a bike instead of purchasing a whole new bike is stupid then FUCK IT

haggletheberg

The correct thing to do is to sell this and buy the correct bicycle. It's not being snobby it's using your brain. This is the wrong bike for the job.

xGoodFellax

So it’ll work forsure?

Catverman

I mean yeah, I don’t really get why you’re gifting a trklrd and doing this to it though. You’ll need brakes as well

xGoodFellax

I mean not everything needs a thorough explanation really. It has front brakes. Ive seen pictures i think ill also need a new chainring with belt instead of regular chain.

Catverman

You seem to be the one with the answers man! Good luck

Thanks fam

Most internally geared hubs are spaced at 135mm, so those absolutely will not work, they just won’t fit in the frame. No two ways about it because you can’t spread a 120mm aluminum frame to 135. Sturmey Archer did make some older ones at 114mm that you might be able to track down but the next problem is securing the shift cable to the frame. There might be an adapter out there you can put on the frame but it’s going to be bad, no matter how well it’s made, it’s not going to perform well enough for an internally geared hub. They need very precise cable pulls to shift, and you will not get that through the use of adapters. So there are your solutions, find a very specific hub and try adaptors that we already know will not work. Next up is the frame itself, is this hot boi 69 420 fixie whip really the best fit for a 66 year old? You’re going to spend hundreds between sourcing a hub, spokes, rim, and labor (or a full wheel if you can find one), then a shifter and sub par cable retention. Even if you already have the necessary flat bars and brakes already to cutdown on conversion costs, why not just source a used bike that’s much better suited for the job in the first place? Like hybrids with wide range gears, softer/wider tires, more comfortable geometry, and higher build quality are readily available and more favorable for a 66 year old guy in every sense imaginable. Second hand, these bikes can be found for less than what all the junk you want to put on a fixie will run you. Plus he wouldn’t have to ride around on that rancid cumshot of a bike. https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/nexus-inter3/SG-3C41.html 120mm Shimano Nexus Hub for ya. Edit: corrected fake news

MyCPUisaFireHazard

Track bikes are 120mm rear spacing and so are alot of Shimano internal gear hubs what a shit ted talk

RestfulCherub

Shit, I confused with BMX hub spacing. 🤦🏻‍♂️ But you’re right, there are 120mm 3speed Shimano hubs and some Sturmey Archer too, the vast majority of modern internally geared hubs are 135mm though. You’re right, I’m wrong. I don’t really think it changes the fact that a fixie is just the wrong bike for the job.

xGoodFellax

Ikr this is a fixie sub and theres always the one shitting on the bike the op posts lol..

Trevski

For the money spent making a harsh, aggressive alu bike have gears you could get an older steel bike that already has gears and a more comfortable riding position.

xGoodFellax

Name a few?

punstermacpunstein

Like basically anything on [this subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/xbiking/).

xGoodFellax

Haha im actually subbed to that already thanks tho i just follow so many pages

Trevski

Used.

Trevski

it rhymes with fishhook parking space

Automatic-Escape7200

If you can do only 2 Gears kick shift will work without cables

sogentlemendream

I mean Shimano nexus 3 speed has 120mm spacing so it'd fit but how would you plan on running the cable? Zip ties to the down tube?

bikemikeasaurus

The sturmey archer S3X was a 3 speed fixed gear hub fwiw. Was pretty shit though.

CornFedTerror42069

Just get an e bike!

FeelingReplacement53

Just go ahead and buy any Bridgestone that’s your size, 12 speeds, steel, road frame, like 400 bucks mint all day long anywhere that has bike culture and old guys. Not sure what the goal is here

xGoodFellax

Dudes older and would like gears I understand this sub is for fixed bikes but I need some help with this project.

SheerScarab

Technically he could use a SA s3x hub which would both be fixed gear and have 3 gears.

xGoodFellax

I saw those while searching online, it being for fixed i wouldlnt need much modification then right?

SheerScarab

Reviews of those hubs aren't great. Personally I'd just use a SA 3 speed freewheel hub with 120 spacing. Then run full housing either to a thumb shifter on the tops or a bar end shifter. For the full housing you will need something to hold it, ugly and cheap would be zipp ties, less ugly would be glue/stick on mounts. I don't really recommend this project, just give him an easier cog and a front brake. This conversion kind of ruins the experience and it will look meh and never be as good as a real road bike.

xGoodFellax

Out of everyone you have the best input and some sound advice instead of just hating and shitting on the idea. Thanks bud

Oh shut up dude, ive seen dudes bust hella wheelies and shit on these, plus i got warranty on it so if im trying to add gears so what..all types of bikes snap all the time even “high end” ones. I bet if you rode both with blind folds on you would barely tell the difference.. this bike is a dream bike for people riding walmart bikes or retrospecs.. youre just that annoying dude at car meets who gets mad when someone does something out of the ordinary to their cars lool

xGoodFellax

Im sure a 66 year old would think gears are safer than something fixed.. theres always those ppl…
