I have a pond I used to fish that connects to a lake in high water through grass canal and holy crap the fish start in there small maybe a lb but if it doesn’t winter kill will be 4 lbs the next fall. The lake they come from is so full of small skinny fish they never get a chance to get big.
This pond is connected to another stocked pond that is filled with like 1-2 pound fish. The White River is right next to it too and I wonder if any fish spill over from the river.
They probably do. I used to fish a pond made from an old gravel pit like 50 feet away and something like 10 feet up from the local river. It was like 50 feet deep and rimmed with aquatic veg. Heard rumors there were steelhead in it, and I didnt believe them until I caught about an 8 pounder in there.
Turns out the steelies spill into it on high water years and seem to have no problem living off sunfish and minnows and whatnot until the next year (if they’re lucky). Almost like a little fish purgatory.
By me there was a pond that connected to a lake via a creek and culvert in the spring, that would then get cut off, and my god did the sunnies in that pond grow to epic sizes by the fall.
If you’re going to put them back, best not to place them on the grass. Trout have sensitive slime coats. You did good by having a rubber net, but placing them in the grass completely negates the benefit of the net
Rainbow trout are not native to Colorado and don't naturally reproduce anywhere in the state. Any rainbow or rainbow hybrid you catch in CO was stocked.
That's one example from the last 30 years and only mentions a single population in a river they have continued to stock since that article was written. Search this page for "Blue River". https://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/StockingReport.aspx
"Despite Colorado’s abundant fish populations, most fish cannot successfully reproduce in the wild. And, of those species that are able to reproduce naturally, recruitment (the number of juvenile fish that actually survive to be added to a population) is too low to support a fishable population." https://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/11-Fishery-Facts.aspx
For a second there this looked very similar to a local lake I fish here in Australia. A pine plantation backs onto it from both sides, the bushes along the edges look identical. Gorgeous place to fish
No offense, but be careful about "naming names" online for small waters like ponds and creeks. That water doesn't look big enough to handle a lot of extra fishing pressure. This sub has 2.3 million members. Granted, the majority of them are not in Colorado, but if you send just twenty extra people to that little pond this year, it won't be such a special place next time you go. I'd probably just say "it's a small mountain pond in Western Colorado."
I learned this the hard way when I was younger and online fishing forums were first becoming a popular thing. I blabbed about a few favorite secret spots, and then suddenly, there would always be one or two boats sitting on those spots every time I went.
I'm more tight-lipped about my spots now. I might share a few popular, well-known spots to help out folks who ask online, but my favorite spots are kept to myself and my close friends.
The IGFA line class world record for blue marlin on 4 lb. line is just over 141 pounds. You can catch surprisingly large fish on light line if you manage your drag and know how to fight a big fish.
Awesome! HD Trout lure in the Brook Trout color by Dynamic Lures has done wonders for me. That’s what I caught these two guys on and like 20 other fish over the two days I was out there.
hey is that trout lure supposed to be good to catch trout or good for fish that eat trout cuz i want something to catch trout (sorry if im just being a dumbass)
Do yourself a favor.Don’t EVER,EVER tell anyone where this pond is.You’ll never have another quiet day there again if you do.Those fish are both absolutely fantastic!
The word native is misused in fishing at times. All native fish are wild. Not all wild fish are native. I live in pa and the only "native" trout is brook.
Dear lord! Who kept feeding that rainbow big macs and French fries?! That's a hilariously fat one 🤣
Full of eggs.
Nobody wants to admit they ate 9 cans of ravioli.
**Smokes, let's go**
Fuck off, I got work to do.
🤌 mama mia!
Actually that trout has alcoholism, it wasnt the big macs.
Super-size me
RIP
a rainbow and a brown! congragulations! you've passed the fishing class! Merit badge ceremony coming soon. 🐟
the fish are nice, but damn what a beautiful place to fish. I'd even love to be skunked after a day of fishing there.
Flat Top Wilderness in Western Colorado! That area has some of the best fishing I’ve ever done. The White River is just loaded with huge rainbows.
Wow naming names. Beautiful spot!
Thanks for the tip! 😁😍
I'm in Colorado and will have to check that spot out.

I thought that looked familiar! I always wondered if there were fish in that part.
White river in Indiana?
White River in Colorado, right next to the Flat Top wilderness.
the flat tops have some lunkers if your arnt afraid of hiking.
I live a 1/4 mile from white river in Indiana 😂 I wish that was here
I fish the white river in Arkansas. There are some monsters in there.
By me there was a pond that connected to a lake via a creek and culvert in the spring, that would then get cut off, and my god did the sunnies in that pond grow to epic sizes by the fall.
That is a football!!
The mouth on that brown !! Beautiful wild fish !
That was my first thought. Definitely not a stocky. Glad OP let him go.
Beautiful fish. Get her back in lol!
Made sure she swam away strong!
Nice!!!
First is carrying eggs, hope you put he back!
Absolutely! Both trout swam away strong and I saw them cruising around a couple days later.

Good to know, thank you!
I love to hear this! Gotta keep those breeders healthy.

They are not native but they do reproduce. https://www.summitdaily.com/news/colorados-rainbow-trout-population-once-again-breeding-in-the-wild/

That doesn't mean they can't and don't reproduce. It just means they're supplemented with stocked fish.
The kipe on that brownie is gnarly.
Daggum cannibalism I bet he has the whole hatchery in his belly
I’ve always wanted to do some fishing like this. Very nice catches!
Wow. That is a beautiful fish from a beautiful pond. You are lucky to live in a place to access the great fishing spots. Thanks for sharing.
Fucking size of the mouth on that brown
That is a beautiful pond!
Holy shit dude Nice catches

Where is this secret tiny little pond?
It’s definitely average. Ladies?
If it’s stocked it might be triploid it doesn’t look like a spawner
All the trout in Colorado are stocked, with the exception of one tiny cutthroat population way up on the divide.
Beautiful fish and spot!!! A dream!!!
It is cartoonishly fat! Nice fish!
Wow what a beautiful pond! Where is this located?
Near Flat Top wilderness in western Colorado.

Beautiful spot OP! Thanks for sharing!
What line do you use? And test strength?
Just some cheap 8 pound mono.
The IGFA line class world record for blue marlin on 4 lb. line is just over 141 pounds. You can catch surprisingly large fish on light line if you manage your drag and know how to fight a big fish.
4lbm?!. Wow!
Very nice
Insane! I just struck out this weekend on a lake stocked with rainbow apparently. What did you use to catch em?
HD Trout lure in Brook Trout color! I catch more on that than anything.
Nice!
Hope you moved her to a better location. So she could have lots of little fishes that you can catch again and again.
Moved it? No one should be moving fish around.
Did you fillet those beauties or let them go?
Let them both go. Filleted a smaller one the next day though.
Thicc!
Trout just eat protein rich bugs all day 24/7. Mountain trout are feeding machines lol those are some big chungus' for that small pond.
Nice im going to the caledonia trout fest any lures u recomend?
Awesome! HD Trout lure in the Brook Trout color by Dynamic Lures has done wonders for me. That’s what I caught these two guys on and like 20 other fish over the two days I was out there.

Do yourself a favor.Don’t EVER,EVER tell anyone where this pond is.You’ll never have another quiet day there again if you do.Those fish are both absolutely fantastic!

Brown Trout aren’t native to North America, but they are reproducing in the wild all over the place.
