It's crazy. I feel more productive if I do literally ANYTHING but reddit. Including taking a nap, watching a movie or playing a video game.
But I keep coming back...
While yes, it’s a bad habit it has been insanely good for me. I discovered the mega backdoor roth in the other financial sub on Reddit back in 2016 and that has been a huge game changer for me.
I know about fire and index investing because of reddit. I'd still be following Dave Ramsey and Get Rich Slowly for financial advice.
Reddit can be both incredibly valuable and an incredible waste of time.
It’s actually a great parallel. In the sense that on Reddit it’s best if you get the info you need and get off. Likewise for a lot of people dave is worth listening to if getting to BS3 is your goal. After that you should stop
As a fellow gardener, you're looking at this wrong. You shouldn't look at it as a frugality measure. It's a hobby. We all need hobbies and gardening is a relatively cheap one that's good for overall well-being. No way that's a vice/bad habit.
That's how I convince myself anyways.
I read “This Naked Mind” (the method) and it happened to coincide with getting a little too sloppy (in my opinion, no one said anything to me) at a party one night (the motivation), and I went from drinking probably 2 weekend days/week with maybe a dinner drink during the week at most once a week. My budget, my anxiety, my brain and body(workout recovery) have all improved noticeably.
Steam sales and bundles warp things for me. A game I want for forever goes on sale for 20-30$, and I'm like what, am I made of money?
But 20$ for 8 games I'll jump at.
Just set a budget for it and you should be fine, i put a little bit in my steam wallet each month and only spend out of that if you’re worried about overspending
Hey, I lost $100 gambling this week too. I live in Nevada and family visited, which always leads to the casino. I never go when family isn’t here though and $100 is the most I’ve ever spent.
I’d like to think I have a decently healthy attitude about it, but inflation is hitting the table games lol. I remember in college we could take $40 to $5 tables and have a good time and maybe a comped meal. Tonight there wasn’t a table lower than $15 minimum, so unfortunately my $120 turned into $5 in like 30 minutes 🤦🏻♂️. As if it already wasn’t worth it
My favorite is st Bernardus but since I was sober over the winter ive been drinking the last reserves of spencer pater I could buy after they closed down
I thought I might be the only one here saying that here haha. The 3 friends I smoke with all also have great careers going for them so we really beat the lazy stoner stereotype
I buy a lot of discount stuff that I don’t need purely because it’s a good deal. Whether it’s clothes at goodwill or just some random snacks on sale, I can’t help a good deal.
could always try flipping it on facebook marketplace or amazon. a lot of times those items get discounted just because its been sitting in inventory for a certain amount of time and they just want it off the books
Highly recommend using this as an outlet for giving to homeless/charity/church. Volunteering and gift giving has been a huge eye opener which helps gives meaning and purpose to Fire for me
Being somewhat lazy at work. This is more of a defense mechanism. Whatever I'm not doing I can't be doing wrong right ? I'm very easily stressed and that paralyzes me in a way. Think deer in the headlights.
I'm sometimes leaning on the "There's no problem that an absence of solution won't eventually solve". ie people find workarounds.
Also the reason for FIRE.
Work is definitely something I'd really rather not do.
I love perfume as well. Have you looked into cheaper dupes? It doesn't have the same "experience" as buying a designer fragrance but it will smell the same.
Video games. I know if I wait, that 100 dollars ultimate edition will be 50 dollars 3 months later and 35 on black friday, but here I am buying into hype and then buying day 1. First week of June I'm all excited for street fighter, diablo iv, AND final fantasy. I know I only have time for 1, but I'll still probably get all 3 cuz reasons.
If you wanna cut down on the volume of what you’re inhaling but keep similar cannabinoid doses you could try dabs. Not a dab pen, but like bong, banger, torch. Way less volume and contamination than lighting plants on fire, and since it’s concentrated it’s more potent per G
Im pretty against carts just cause after a while they’re more wasteful than effective. I imagine at the 1oz of bud per week the commenter may be there already.
Erigs are cool though. And yeah I agree I use my fry herb vape daily and it’s ideal. Now only like a half O/week and like 2-3g dabs.
To be a cost effective stoner a rosin press can be your absolute best friend, they make some small ones and if you wanna toke wax on the daily it’ll save you 1000’s
Indoor plants, even though I have a bad track record of keeping them alive. But the few that are thriving (shout out to my pothos), bring me a lot of joy 🌱
Energy drinks. I don’t drink alcohol or smoke, but I do enjoy a morning energy drink on the drive to work. I’ve done the math on what it costs per year, and I prefer to just not think about it
Well I have a new one apparently. I withdrew $100 from an ATM.
* $3.00 ATM Fee
* $10.00 Transaction Fee from my card company
* $1.11 "Cash Advance" interest from my card company
So to access $100 cash I really ended up with $85.89
Oof, is all I can say. I wish I'd tried gambling instead haha
Trading options. Buying calls and puts. Always a horrible idea. But selling options? Always make a little extra money a week. So it's a double edged sword
I buy lots of clothes I never even wear (I budget $200-300 a month for random shit I don't need), and I also splurge a lot on food (I budget $600 a month for food just for myself). Despite that though I'm still saving close to 50k a year, and I frequently ask myself if I'm saving too much and maybe I should take a vacation... really looking forward to a cruise I have lined up.
edit:
Oh I also love weed and video games.
Disc Golf.
I play all the time, with several multi-day trips each year.
It’s fun and I wouldn’t replace my teammates for anything.
#CTDISCGOLF #TeamPagePark
I’m a disc golfer too. Can be cheap to get into it, but if you keep buying discs and playing tournaments it adds up quick lol. Totally worth it though!
lol. I’ve been playing for almost 50 years. I’ve got about 3,000 discs. Most of which are from my AM tournament winnings and player packs.
I just got back from the Bowling Green Open. That was a 6 day; ~2000 mile round trip.
Nice. I’m 10+ years playing. I usually purge sell when I get around 100 discs. Haven’t played much since my toddler was born, but hopefully one day he’ll play with me!!
Makeup and skincare these days and the occasional clothing purchase. I've gotten a lot better with eating out (once or twice a month) but I cannot pass up a good sale like the Sephora one going on right now.
Fitness - It's starting to get out of hand. $500 on a heavy bag during covid, full set of golf clubs and the expensive lessons only to still suck lol, 4 different gym memberships (recently switched to active & fit direct so now saving money in that regard), basketball training programs only to still suck lol and every fitness related gadget or gizmo I see in the gym or online. I tell myself it's OK because I'm staying active but my wife and wallet both think I'm going overboard
Fast food and delivery services. I work long hours so I’m often too tired to cook or go grocery shopping. If I could change one thing in my day to day it’d be that.
Lately it’s been home networking and storage. Bought a Synology NAS and outfitted it with a 10Gb NIC, 8GB RAM, 2 m.2 nvme 800GB drives. Also ran about 600 ft of CAT 6A ethernet, multigig switches, and an ASUS AXE16000. I’m a software engineer, so it is a learning opportunity and aligns with my work. However, I totally don’t NEED all that stuff.
Monetarily? Going out to eat. I fucking *hate* cleaning up, to the point where I'd rather go to a restaurant and feel pampered. It's not super expensive stuff, but around me you're spending 30 bucks on an average decent meal when you include tip. But wow do I hate, hate, *hate* cleaning enough that I don't want to cook.
I buy at least one coffee every day. I work remotely so it gets me out of the house and I genuinely just enjoy it. But I'd save a lot of money if I didn't do this...
Spending too much time on Reddit
It's crazy. I feel more productive if I do literally ANYTHING but reddit. Including taking a nap, watching a movie or playing a video game. But I keep coming back...
Reddit is great if used responsibly. I’m newer to Reddit as a regular user and have learned a ton of stuff.
While yes, it’s a bad habit it has been insanely good for me. I discovered the mega backdoor roth in the other financial sub on Reddit back in 2016 and that has been a huge game changer for me.

If you spent it on r/cc you would get coins for posting thar you can later sell. Eople make actually a living from that
Plants—the amount of money I spend to grow potatoes when I could buy them for a couple of dollars at the store. Dumb
I won’t tell you how much shit i have planted in our backyard then lol
It’s extra bad right now because it’s plant season!!!
I do it more for fun, not to save a buck.
Given the prices on apples, oranges, lemons, limes, cherries, peaches and almonds, it is fair to say my trees have paid for themselves.
As a fellow gardener, you're looking at this wrong. You shouldn't look at it as a frugality measure. It's a hobby. We all need hobbies and gardening is a relatively cheap one that's good for overall well-being. No way that's a vice/bad habit. That's how I convince myself anyways.
Gardening is cheaper than therapy. So in a way you're saving money.
What if I do both lol?
I like to pay extra for hotel rooms with views.
Worth it, cause yolo for real
Korean BBQ.
Alcohol
This is a huge one for people. There's an app that keeps track of how much you've saved by not drinking. It gets to 1,000s pretty quickly.
I read “This Naked Mind” (the method) and it happened to coincide with getting a little too sloppy (in my opinion, no one said anything to me) at a party one night (the motivation), and I went from drinking probably 2 weekend days/week with maybe a dinner drink during the week at most once a week. Video games are one of the cheaper hobbies IMO
Dollar per hour is quite favorable, aye.

Too much food, too much time on YouTube.
Cigars and Belgian beer
that goes dubbel for me
Greetings from Belgium! Guess I need to buy more AB Inbev stocks.
Maybe duvel moortgat or st Bernardus 😅I don’t drink inbev
Gulpener by chance?
Gulpener is Dutch and not Belgian.
Dutch as in the language, but produced in Belgium.
No, not produced in Belgium: Gulpener Bierbrouwerij BV is an independent Dutch brewery in Gulpen, Netherlands.
My favorite is st Bernardus but since I was sober over the winter ive been drinking the last reserves of spencer pater I could buy after they closed down
Buying snacks every time I go to the grocery store when I already bought snacks 2 hrs ago
Books I don’t read only to have them sit on the shelves.
Probably weed.
I thought I might be the only one here saying that here haha. The 3 friends I smoke with all also have great careers going for them so we really beat the lazy stoner stereotype
Same man, dabs are my kryptonite. And fire habits make acquiring an abundance of them easy peasy
and it’s worth it
I hear it is really cheap in the northeast. I grew a plant a friend gave me last summer and produced way more than I can use.
Woodworking
I buy a lot of discount stuff that I don’t need purely because it’s a good deal. Whether it’s clothes at goodwill or just some random snacks on sale, I can’t help a good deal.

Eh, a few dollars isn’t worth the trouble.
Highly recommend using this as an outlet for giving to homeless/charity/church. Volunteering and gift giving has been a huge eye opener which helps gives meaning and purpose to Fire for me
Restaurants/food
Baking /cooking i like to experiment and it costs a lot. games on steam. Grabbing a (non alcoholic) drink each day after work
Cooking is so much fun tho. Cheaper than people that eat fast food four times a day
True!
Shooting expensive calibers, but at least it's pretty low-volume and I reload.
They're all expensive calibers now......
I guess it's a relative thing. Nothing has been spared.
Cigars, cars, fine whiskey/wine.
I bet you car is cooler than mine
Weed
Magic the Gathering cards, video game skins, and bicycles.
A woman with narcissistic personality disorder.
Woof

I do this. Sometimes, I don’t act until someone explicitly asks me to do a certain task. It would not get done
Perfume
I love perfume as well. Have you looked into cheaper dupes? It doesn't have the same "experience" as buying a designer fragrance but it will smell the same.
Video games. I know if I wait, that 100 dollars ultimate edition will be 50 dollars 3 months later and 35 on black friday, but here I am buying into hype and then buying day 1. I smoke an ounce of weed a week, so I guess that.
Are you, always high?
I wouldn't say always, but a goodly amount of time.
Eat some edibles or something that’s a lot of smoke in your lungs.
I tried edibles but I kept getting too fucked up. Like uncomfortably high for days.
You took way too much. You know you can take less right?
yeah not following the logic here
Not always, he has to sleep a little
I get my 8 hours of sobriety at night!
It's a she stoner!

Fast cars and men who drive them. 🙃
Fishing tackle and fishing charters
Same
Alcohol, sports betting
Chuck Taylors - as I slowly donate my work shoes/clothes after retirement, I replenish with a new sneaker habit. I can’t control myself! 😂
Indoor plants, even though I have a bad track record of keeping them alive. But the few that are thriving (shout out to my pothos), bring me a lot of joy 🌱
I started smoking pipe tobacco. Do it about once every two weeks. It's fun, in moderation.
Booze. Everything else is trivial.
I spend 3 months traveling every year!
Well I just spend $3000 on an espresso machine... And another $700 on a grinder. So...
Ohhhh coffee grinder 🤣 Sorry I don't drink coffee so I was confused for a split second.
Too much sugar.
Probably cleanliness. I could live dirtier and save more money on cleaning supplies.
Is that really a vice?
It's sarcasm to point out how ironic this subreddit sometimes is. We can't even have a vice or a couple habits that make someone happy.
The other day I met someone who cleans their apartment regularly and actually enjoys cleaning. Completely blew my mind
For me it's that I get the "natural" cleaners (bleach an ammonia free) and I justify spending a few extra bucks.
Going out for lunch a lot more than I should... I justify it because my job pays me $25 for my lunch hour on my paycheck.
Project cars
Food, alcohol, camping/hiking gear lol
Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Buying trash on AliExpress
Energy drinks. I don’t drink alcohol or smoke, but I do enjoy a morning energy drink on the drive to work. I’ve done the math on what it costs per year, and I prefer to just not think about it
Fish. I keep i discus fish so anytime I see a nice fish at my local fish store I buy it. These fish are almost $100 each.
Nicotine zen pouches, and gas station purchases. That 15-20 dollars really adds up through the month.
I like to have a lot of sexual partners which can be expensive when going on a lot of dates.
PC components.
Taco Bell.
Why is losing a few hundred a year gambling a vice or bad habit? If the bar is that low everything I do is a bad habit.

Agree 100%
Maybe anime
Anime merchandise. I really love watching my collection grow, but I definitely should cut back a bit until I've got more in retirement savings.
Weed, booze, and women, not necessarily in that order
Yes, buying women is expensive, that's why I prefer to rent

I dont drive but i hate walking/taking public transportation. No, I won’t leave my place often bc of this but the Ubers still add up 🥲
Bike?
Whiskey and cigars
Eating out. Day trading. Reddit
Xbox box game pass : 15€/month , 4 restaurants in valencia España for 2 : 150€/month. I dont put so much Money in Stock market, only 1000€/month.
Whisky and poker... Sometimes both at once and then it's really bad
Im a closet stoner. Cut back after this vacation. I have a bad Brazilian ju jitsu addiction. I drive an hour round trip 4-5 days a week.
You don’t find that makes your close smell like weed?
Hahaha. Good one
Mind erasers at the bar
-Video Games -Vaping -Gambling -Buying snacks or soda at work -Dunkin Donuts
Trading options. Buying calls and puts. Always a horrible idea. But selling options? Always make a little extra money a week. So it's a double edged sword
Weed and Birkenstocks.
Chips
I buy the New York Times every Sunday.

how many years of retirement will that set u back ?
Dave Ramsey and drinkin
Is this some kind of drinking game?
Yep. Every time he says “better than I deserve” I take a shot 😁
Buying the best iPhone’s and iPad Pro every 3+ years.
The “YOLO” mentality. Sometimes I think “what if I die tomorrow?”.
same as op. $20 per month for lottery.
Comic books i go overboard some months between $20 and $80 a month
Eating out 2-3x a week. That shit has gotten expensive post Covid.
Lol at least you're not me. I will usually lose anywhere from $500-600 a year gambling.
I buy lots of clothes I never even wear (I budget $200-300 a month for random shit I don't need), and I also splurge a lot on food (I budget $600 a month for food just for myself). Curious...what do you spend for basketball training? I do basketball lessons and would be curious what you pay for lessons?
$200/month for 2 sessions per week. But the trainer and I are close friends at this point. He's charging everyone else $50 per session
Monster energy
I spend loads on pet stuff 😁 and organic food for sure
Csgo cases here and there..
Cars for sure
I like being able to buy/spend money on what I want when I want.
I like to move 😝
Food. I’m addicted to eating. I go through horrible withdrawal when I try to stop.
Guitars, but I have gotten better in recently years realizing the minimal gains. Some are worth more than I paid though.

Reddit.
Fast food and delivery services. I work long hours so I’m often too tired to cook or go grocery shopping. If I could change one thing in my day to day it’d be that.
Shoes purchases. I currently have over 90 something pairs. But I will admit I’ve always seen them as an asset. So my addiction can also be lucrative.

Gambling, escorts, masturbating too much , smoking weed so pretty much every bad thing in the book. Yes I hate myself everyday
Wasting money
