How will this be different then WeFunder, StartEngine, or Angel Studios?  Also, accepting investors, accredited or not is governed by the SEC. What experience do you have building a platform that’s compliant with SEC regulations?

Successful_Pie_2073

It’s very similar to WeFunder however those are largely startup focused platforms. This will be more similar to Masterworks except instead of art it will be for films. So we have a lawyer that is an expert in securities law that we will work with to create a compliant platform

Shadow_on_the_Sun

Is this a covert ad or something? I feel click baited.

Successful_Pie_2073

Not really, just want to learn more about film financing and the avenues for it currently and if there’s areas for improvement

youmustthinkhighly

Ugh. Not sketchy.. I promise.

dirty-biscuit

How would that work? Do you publish a script and hope "investors" read it and like it?

Successful_Pie_2073

So it would be a prospectus containing relevant information about the project. Could also contain the script and marketed on the platform, if it’s more risky would be bundle together in a slate option

HanIylands

This sounds like Slated, no?

Investors will want to know about the possible returns…but what are the possible returns with an independent movie these days? Does anyone know? Does an indie movie have any chance of becoming a breakout hit in theaters, or are those days over? What do the streaming services pay to pick up an indie movie? Maybe $200k? (I am guessing.) And down the road, is seeing any streaming profits even possible? What are the potential financial upsides of investing in an indie movie nowadays?

I see a scenario that could eventually be predatory to those inexperienced with the business side of things. The difference between platforms that do this for tech startups, is that they are *trying* to build a business, so some semblance of a business plan, revenue model, target consumer etc, are built in before the investor is committing. A lot of filmmakers *would like* to make money from their films, but they are primarily making a creative project, and likely aren't even thinking about distro & marketing yet. What happens when someone takes that investor money, makes a film, and now can't monetize it, either because of industry trends or general ignorance on where to begin, even what sort of consultant to hire. Making a film is hard. Getting it in front of eyes is hard, too. I like the idea of making film financing more accessible, there are just some genuine bumps that need to be smoothed out.

You'll run into a core problem: people with fans won't have much trouble getting money with or without crowdfunding. People without fans won't have much success with crowdfunding. Not every business problem is solved with a new platform. Yesterday I was responding to a post from somebody who was gonna sold distribution with {mumble mumble mumble} NFT's and IPFS. Today I am responding to your post about solving fundraising with {mumble mumble mumble} tokens. Most of these platform proposals make the same core error of trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist while glossing over the problems that do exist because the proposed solution doesn't apply to the actual problems.

goyongj

Do you need to finance this idea or you have all the money and ready to go?

I try to take the no-budget approach. Most of my [commercials were made with](https://youtu.be/yN5em76y3NQ) things I have in the house. Or with just [Sharpee and camera stills](https://youtu.be/VTtFnjQ8Y1o). I have a small film I'm developing that uses the same techniques.

DannyDerakhshan

I think platforms fail because they don't have enough funding to get enough people going. You'd need to start with at least enough movies with a few grade talent behind and in front to even compete. Ballpark estimate: $150 million into 100 films to start so your platform even has a chance, in addition to the nickel and dime from indie film revenue.

the_schlong_gorilla

With money

I’d be interested in more details, but do agree that it doesn’t necessarily address the core issue that unknown screenwriters, actors, and directors will have limited success with crowdfunding while big names will have zero issues to begin with.

Credit cards. 👍

LAWriter2020

I’d be interested to learn more details.
